GOING THE EXTRA MILE
Sanzenbacher, teammates have travel trouble
By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

PHOENIX - People migrate to the desert Southwest this time of year to escape winter, vacation in a locale with abundant sunshine, or just get spiritually enriched by the raw beauty of a place where barren and desolate can seem so enchanting.

Former Central Catholic star Dane Sanzenbacher is in Arizona's largest city on business, and as he learned earlier this week, sometimes just getting here can be an ordeal.

The Ohio State wide receiver's trip to the site of Monday's
Fiesta Bowl matchup with No. 3 Texas sounded like it was part of a sequel to the film comedy Airplane, with bits of the Planes, Trains & Automobiles flick thrown in here and there.

"I think there's an easier way to get here," Sanzenbacher said yesterday after describing his sojourn that first took him more than 300 miles in the opposite direction, and ended up costing him and three of his Buckeyes teammates a day of preparation.

After their Christmas break, the Ohio State players were permitted to make their way to Phoenix on their own, and Sanzenbacher joined running back Brandon Saine, receiver Ben Kacsandi and defensive back Zach Domicone in Columbus on Monday to catch a US Airways flight destined for our nation's capital.

Once in D.C., the four Buckeyes would connect with a flight to Arizona and arrive here at about the same time as the coaching staff and the rest of the players.

Surely, that seemed simple enough. No, and as Leslie Nielsen reminded us repeatedly in Airplane, don't call anyone Shirley.

"There was a 'check engine' light on or something, so our flight out of Columbus was delayed, and by the time we got to D.C., we missed the connection," Sanzenbacher said. "The really bad news came when we learned that the next US Airways flight out to Phoenix would not be until 5 p.m. the next day."

The group took a cab to Baltimore with hopes of catching a flight to Arizona there, but after they got caught in a snarl of holiday traffic and further delayed, those options evaporated. They spent the night in a hotel and squeezed onto a west-bound flight the next morning, arriving here just in time to catch a portion of the Buckeyes' second practice in Arizona.

"It was a hassle, but we made it, and that's the important thing," the OSU sophomore said. "If the check engine light is on, I guess I'd rather be a little bit late. I don't travel that much, and when I do it is usually on team charters and everything goes pretty much according to plan. But this is one trip I'll remember. I think I'll fly direct the next time."

For the last leg of their trip west, Dane and his tardy team mates may have to take a few more laps around the Saguaro Cactus and get back to work.

Going the extra mile may be a good thing in this game. Looking for Zoom and Sanzo to give UT some travel trouble on the field on Monday.

THE MORNING ROAST: Carter looks to follow in dad's footsteps Morning Journal: Serving Lorain, Erie, Huron and western Cuyahoga counties

This is a bit of old news, but worth a few comments. It seems that the new class is here and Carter is the WR de jour. Not so fast, Dane had a pretty solid year with TP learning the system and ALL the WRs performing at average levels (whatever that means). I have no doubt that Dane will give it his all and Carter will compete for a starting spot. Let's not rush to elevate him to stardom.

IN his first year at Ohio State, Cris Carter tied the freshman scoring record with eight touchdowns. Now his son is headed to Ohio State, perhaps at the perfect time.

Duron Carter could benefit the most by Brian Hartline's early departure for the NFL. The Bucks are short two starting receivers, with what looks like less talent in the cupboard now than usual. DeVier Posey is all but assured a starting job, but Ray Small has been an underachieving head case for three years. There is little proof that will change now.

Dane Sanzenbacher has looked average for two years, perhaps leaving the door open for Carter to play immediately.

Freshman receivers who can play have a tendency of finding ways onto the field under Jim Tressel (Ted Ginn, Brian Robiskie, DeVier Posey, Sanzenbacher). Now Carter could be next.

I thought Dane looked better than average. He runs good routes, has great hands, and is not afraid to take a hit. Can't really ask for much more than that.

Agreed, I thought the article was a bit misinformed. Sanzo and Posey stand to be two starters this year. Carter is going to have to prove himself at the next level, considering his stock that may be a fairly easy task. Not a given, but calling the present WRs as average is simply wrong. Duron has some tough shoes to fill and he may labeled as average if he doesn't match his father's exceptional play.

Average? Played as a true frosh and made some really nice catches this year. None of the receivers looked great last year. I expect Sanzo to double last year's production now that Pryor has a year under his belt. Jason Lloyd is not my favorite writer.

I don't really think about who will play or start because whoever the coaches put out on the field will be fun to watch.
We have a great WR section of our team and I have no favorite so I'm not worried.

yep, and i think he might actually be better.

in fact, it looked to me as though sanzo was pryor's favorite target last year.

Yeah, anyone who thinks this kid is 'average' really hasn't watched any tape. Don't know if I agree that Dane was TP's fav outlet last year... but what is clear... Dane got the ball thrown his way quite a few times... and bailed TP out a few times too. Looking for great things between the two of them next year for sure.

There were times last year when he was SO wide open that you had to wonder if he was wearing camo or something. I can think of several times (against PSU, scUM, etc.) where I was left scratching my head of why he was so wide open. I've heard from other guys that he runs great routes and thought I read a quote somewhere from Malcolm saying that he thought Dane was the hardest guy to guard because his routes are so clean. Every program needs guys like that. He is shifty, runs good routes, and still alive, albeit barely.

Clean route runners like Dane keep zone defenses honest. Hopefully Lamaar can develop into a deep threat and Posey can be our all around guy to give us an arsenal of receivers comparable to what we had in 2005,2006.
