WR Anthony Gonzalez (2005 All B1G, US Congressman)

Indy Star

Gonzalez hoping to make his own name in NFL
By Michael Marot

Anthony Gonzalez relishes his gritty job.

Yes, he?s in Indianapolis to catch passes, study hard and get his timing down with Peyton Manning. But to the Colts? first-round draft pick, it?s less about upstaging his new Pro Bowl teammates, Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, or becoming a superstar than it is about winning.

?The thing that?s most important to me is whether my teammates and coaches appreciate my contributions to winning football games,? Gonzalez said Sunday at his introduction in Indianapolis. ?When Peyton drops back, I want him to know he can throw it to me, and that if he does throw it to me, I?ll catch it.?

Gonzalez is a throwback to old-school football.

He signed with Ohio State. During his freshman year, he called Eduardo, saying he hated Ohio State and wanted to transfer. Eduardo told him no. Anthony said he would live with his grandmother. Eduardo again told him no, that he was calling his grandmother immediately and wouldn’t allow it.
A year later, Anthony called home again and told Eduardo he didn’t think Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel liked him.
“I said, ‘You’re like a little kid – my teacher doesn’t like me,’’ Eduardo recalled. “I said, ‘Why don’t you go have a talk with him?”
According to Eduardo, Tressel told Anthony Ohio State liked him.
“We think you’re talented, but you act like you deserve a position,” Eduardo said Tressel told Anthony. “You’ve got to work like you’re trying to earn it.”
“You mean that’s all it takes?” was Anthony’s reply.
“He went out and worked and Tressel let him in,” Eduardo said. “That was a big lesson for him. A big one, one of those moments when your life changes. It was a revelation.”

From the first post in the thread... bears repeating.

While the team was going through a mid-season funk, an aggravated Anthony Gonzalez asked for a closed-door meeting with OSU head coach Jim Tressel.

"I said, 'What do you need to see from me so I can get on the field?'" Anthony Gonzalez recalled. "He said, "Step it up in practice. It all starts with practice. We need to see full-speed reps from you all the time."

"So, I made a conscious effort - the best effort I could muster every day - and I guess that paid off."
I guess it did.

I love it! Smart, fast, precise route runner with a smart and accurate QB. I can't picture Gonzo NOT succeeding in the Colts offense.

I'm really happy to see two of my favorite Buckeyes here in Indy now with Mike Doss and now Gonzo. I won't go far as to say they'll turn me into a Colts fan but I'm okay with rooting on the Colts as long as they're not playing the Bengals. :)

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Doss signed with Minnesota earlier in the off-season.

a very interesting read, indeed.

why didn't eduardo just write a letter to tressel, complaining about his son's playing time? i'm sure he could have gotten a few players' parents together for a sit-down with tressel. :p

Then he'd have been "playin' intramurals brutha" instead of raking in coin and hopefully lots of footballs as a Colt.
