Draftee Gonzalez to miss minicamp
League says Colts' top pick must attend NFL-sponsored event, but Freeney to be here
By Mike Chappell

Dwight Freeney and Anthony Gonzalez know where they want to be this weekend: at the Indianapolis Colts' West 56th Street complex for a mandatory three-day minicamp.
Only Freeney, the team's career sack leader who has yet to sign his one-year, $9.43 million contract as a "franchise'' player, will get his wish.
"I decided I'm going to pop in and be with the guys,'' he said Thursday.
Gonzalez's situation is markedly different.
The Colts' first-round draft pick has been prohibited from participating in the minicamp -- by the NFL, no less -- because he was one of 35 rookies invited to Reebok's NFL Player Rookie Premier. It's a major happening for the league and its sponsors, and begins today in Los Angeles.

Gonzalez demanding

Anthony Gonzalez has yet to catch a pass from Manning, but the team's first-round draft pick has made an impression.
Manning introduced himself to Gonzalez during a rookie minicamp two weeks ago.
"He pulled out a list and had 20 questions for me about the offense,'' Manning said. "He wasn't into small talk. He was into business talk, which was impressive to me.''
Gonzalez was prohibited from participating in this weekend's minicamp by the NFL because he was invited to Reebok's NFL Rookie Premier in Los Angeles.

I understand the need for marketing, but what is more valuable... One extra, low-profile player at the rookie premiere, or rookie Gonzo catching his stride earlier in the NFL season (thx to this camp)?
Gonzalez initially declined the invitation, intent on participating in minicamp. When a few other players followed suit, the NFL's Management Council stepped in and sent memos to all 32 teams. The "invitation'' would be honored. Even if a player decided not to participate in the sponsor-related event, he could not attend his team's minicamp.

"Gonzo is distraught,'' McCartney said. "He wants to play football.''
Compounding Gonzalez's situation is the fact his academic requirements at Ohio State will preclude him from participating in the early portions of the Colts' summer school. He will miss valuable time as he attempts to replace veteran Brandon Stokley as quarterback Peyton Manning's slot receiver.

WORKING HIS WAY IN
By John Oehser - Colts.com
First-Round Selection Gonzalez Participating in OTAs

Dungy said Gonzalez?s drive to fit in has been obvious.

?Anthony wants to be like (Pro Bowl wide receivers) Marvin (Harrison) and Reggie (Wayne) and the guys who have been here ? he wants to feel that comfortable,? Dungy said after a summer-school practice Thursday morning.

Dungy added, laughing, ?He wants to feel that comfortable Day 2. We try to tell him he won?t be. He doesn?t believe that.

?He thinks tomorrow he?ll be ready to go.?

Colts? Anthony Gonzalez hits ground running
By Tom James
Tribune-Star Correspondent
INDIANAPOLIS ? With his Ohio State studies now behind him, Indianapolis Colts rookie wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez has been put to the test in a far different way.

Gonzalez, the Colts? first-round draft pick last April, got off to a later start in working out with the team due to class and finals commitments at OSU. He was also a reluctant participant an NFL-sponsored event for the league?s top rookie players in Los Angeles last month.

It shouldn?t come as much of a surprise, then, that the former Buckeyes? standout has ? quite literally ? hit the ground running since reporting for work on a full-time basis on May 24.

Indianapolis - School's out and a new class of college graduates are heading out into the real world to begin their careers. Some college football players are lucky enough to start making money playing a game.
There's no 87 or 88 on the field at the Colts' voluntary workouts. That leaves more work for a pair of rookie wide receivers. First round draft pick Anthony Gonzalez and fifth rounder Roy Hall are taking advantage of extra reps while Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison are gone for the summer.
"This is the time, really, when a lot of the vets are around and it's probably a little bit slower in terms of what they put in offensively; give you things that you can handle, things that you can do," said Gonzalez.

LEARNING THE DETAILS
By John Oehser - Colts.com

Gonzalez Continues to Make NFL Adjustment

?My thing is I kind of challenged myself a while back not to have any mental errors when training camp opened,? Gonzalez said Tuesday as the Colts? continued their summer-school sessions at their practice facility.

?We?re still a ways away from that and I?m a ways away from that goal. At the same time, you have to find little gimmicks and clues as to how you?re going to pick up different things and what each word means and how it translates to a route or play.?

And Dungy said he sees no signs of that focus blurring.

?Anthony, I think, is going to be a very good player for us,? Dungy said. ?He?s a guy who really pays attention to details. That?s unique for a young guy. Most young people who come in are really just trying to learn what they?re supposed to do and learn their assignments and the basics of them.

?He wants to know what?s going on and he wants to learn every little detail of what he?s supposed to do. I think that?s probably why he was a good player in college and why I think he?s going to be a good player (here).

?We knew he could catch the ball and had quickness in and out of breaks, and the things you need to do to be a good receiver, but his mindset is very, very impressive.?
