That loss yesterday was a combination of horrible execution of plays, meltdowns by the players, and piss-poor coaching/play calling. The last two of the three fall directly on Marty. As has been posted, he'll win "games" and thats pretty much it. If they want a Super Bowl, he should be canned.

i don't understand how meltdowns by players fall on the coach. i'd say that falls on the players. these aren't kids, they're grown men getting paid millions of dollars to do their job.

I wouldn't fire him. He's done a good job with the Chargers. With the exception of offensive lineman, good coaches are the hardest thing to find in the NFL (see the Browns thread  ).

I think he's probably going to be fired, but I don't honestly think he should be. He did lead them to the #1 seed.

The fact that Marty and the GM of the Chargers aren't talking is a problem though.

You made my point with your comment. Yes, they are grown men making millions of dollars. And, they are "babysat" by another guy being paid millions of dollars to do that job. Stupid personal fouls or unsportsmanlike conducts by "kids" can be written of as such-if you wish to. The same infractions by a professional athlete to me, anyway, is a reflection of the Head Coach.

Personally, I think Marty's gotta go.

But Richard Simmons is pulling for him:

I would say he should go, but a lot of the things that happened today were not his fault. Idiotic penalties, muffed punts, dropped passes, are all things that can kill a game and a coach's tenure.

Though I will say that Cromartie head butting a Patriot after the play, giving them the first down (and leading to a field goal - which was the difference in the game) does reflect on the coaches in some way, but with the NFL being the way it is nowadays, maybe some of that can't be prevented.

The Marty Watch begins for Chargers

BERNIE WILSON

Associated Press

SAN DIEGO - Marty Schottenheimer got a vote of confidence Monday from LaDainian Tomlinson. Unfortunately for Schottenheimer, the league MVP isn't going to be deciding whether he remains as coach of the San Diego Chargers following their shocking ouster well short of the Super Bowl.

I am hoping he gets one more year, not because he's a great coach or anything but because overall it has been a great season. Sure, they got knocked out of the playoffs first round but the Chargers playoff record all around is 7-12, so it's not like they are going anywhere. Ross got them to the Superbowl but we saw how that worked out.

The major problem with sundays debacle was the 9 touches that Tomlinson got in the second half, but other than that, it seemed to be problems that the players caused.

Also, Marty has changed his coaching style a lot this year, he's been airing it out more, taking more chances, just seems that he went a little too far in some of his decisions on Sunday.

If nothing else, next year we will get to see how much of this year was the chargers skill players and how much of it was the luxury of a soft schedule.

Absolutely. I would fire him because he has shown he tightens up in the clutch and makes bad decisions. Any coach who reacts this way will undoubtedly rub off on his players. He wasn't the one that had the personal foul, and he wasn't the DB that fumbled his interception but he was so nervous on the sideline he called a challenge on a play that was blatantly obvious. Poor decision making starts at the top and works its way down.

The Marty Gag Factor
By David Schoenfield

Chargers fans, meet Chiefs fans. Chiefs fans, you already know Browns fans. Your therapy session may now begin.

Is there anything in sports more painful than rooting for a team coached by Marty Schottenheimer? Chargers fans felt the sting in 2004 when San Diego lost at home to the Jets in a wild-card playoff game. Sunday's loss to the Patriots was a dagger in the spine, further affirmation of Schottenheimer's playoff issues.

Ack! A tale of 12 Losses...

I think so. I think he continues to lose credibility as a coach that can lead this team to the SB. Also, they are at a serious risk of losing Cam Cameron, and I think they would rather keep him and hand him over the reigns than keep Marty on and risk losing Cameron.

Should Marty stay or go?
espn.com

Merril Hoge

It was poor play by players and it's a darn shame if he gets blamed for that and loses his job.

Mark Schlereth

It would be ludicrous for the Chargers to fire him right now.
The actual thread has a poll, at the time of this posting 95K people had voted and 74% like Marty. Now the question is, how many people voted because they like playing against him in the playoffs?

Either way, looks like ESPN is pulling for him.

I think he will probably stay another year, if SD had someone in mind they would have clipped him, and I don't see anyone else out there thats jumping at the chance to go coach a team that historically hasn't exactly been a success.

I think that what is lost throughout this debate is the fact that Marty built a very good football team, and has done so several times. I'm not sure if he is a big game coach.....he hasn't done much in the playoffs. That being said, how many coaches get their guys to the playoffs as many times as Marty has?
