I used to play FIFA World Cup on the original playstation and loved the British announcers. I forget their names, but they were great. Of course, the next year's version of the game had Julie Foody (or one of the other bitches) doing the announcing, which ruined the entire game.

EA's FIFA 2003 had John Motson and Ally McCoist...they rule.

1. when i'm watching a soccer match, i love it when the announcers have british accents (i particularly enjoy tommy smith).
Tommy Smyth is a great clown as a commentator, which I mean as a complement, but don't tell that Irishman he's British, whatever you do.

He did call it right on the PK in Spain's 4-0 rout of Ukraine.

EDIT - 2 other thoughts on that game -
Ukraine likely still makes the next round. I mean, what are the opponents facing them? Tunisia, Suadi Arabia? Effectively two tomato cans in a heavyweight contest. Unless Ukraine hits the analyst's couch they should get 6 points from their next two games.
Raul, even if he does not get back to full form, Spain has all the horses to do very well.

Nice 3-0 win for Equador over Costa Rica today. Both Ecuador and Germany are through; they will play to determine who wins the group. Right now Ecuador is ahead on goal differential.

England is now playing a motivated Trinidad & Tobago team. Every player on T&T has been promised a 64-gallon barrel of rum if the team beats England.

Just when I thought England couldn't show any more just how boring and tactically inept they are, and Crouch and Lampard couldn't show any more just how terribly overrated they are, surprise, surprise...another pathetic performance by the almighty Three Lions.

If this team doesn't make some major, major changes, they'll be lucky to get past the round of 16.

Those two did a terrible job of finishing today.

Beckham's been taking a lot of heat about being overrated, but he put at least three 30-yard crosses right on the fucking money. The first two were butchered by guys who had open nets in front of them, and Crouch finally nailed the last one.

We'll see how much difference Rooney makes when he gets more paying time.

It will be interesting to see how they work Rooney in...in my opinion they'd be crazy to take out Crouch right now...and I don't think they'll take out Owen, even if he does nothing.

I promised myself I would only write up a post-England critique if I avoided looking at anyone else's viewpoints. That way I could, for one brief shining moment consider myself to be completely (ahem) impartial.

Crouch, his game changing goal notwithstanding, is the major problem with the England team.

Sven and his Svengalis had a chance to change the shape of the team in a beneficial manner when they decided to bring in Rooney.

Watching this contest as I did on tape (DVR) and having diligently avoided hearing or catching ANY mention of the game before said play-back I was fully into the action. I was -- Pissed, Pissed Off, and looking for effective change.

At that moment, the change I was urging was for Rooney in, Crouch out.

Crouch changes the shape of the English team, and he changes it in a manner that is generally not productive in THIS tournament. Put Rooney alongside Owen, with Rooney on the inside and that I feel would be a huge winning combination.

Now, I did like the other substitution which brought Lennon in on the right wing, but why oh why not have Cole on the Left and Lennon on the right from the get-go? Frees up Beckham, makes the whole shape of the forward five flow so much better.

These very simple matters are - in my opinion - completely beyond Sven and his cast of idiot Savant Svengalis.

T-n-T has made two teams look bad thus far in the tournament.
Once with ten men, today against a full squad. They have zero chance of advancing - they may still piss in someone else's pool before all is said and done.

If Sven is given a Micky Finn, and someone with a full brain handles the players on the pitch England still will end up with 7 or 9 points from Group play. Then it becomes an interesting matter as to who wins between Germany and Ecuador.

If Sven is left in charge, and is not physically incapacitated, I fear we will see another disorganized scrum - which may gift the Swedish squad the three points they need to win the group.

For those not paying attention - I call for Crouch to be out of the starting line-up in the next match. Put Owen in there, put Rooney beside him at the true IF position. Get 60 minutes at best out of Rooney, that'd be better than the laid-back 82 minutes of misery from the 6 foot 7 inch wet noodle that was impersonating a Center Forward, before Crouch scored the goal that made it 1-0.

trail, herbie's comments were TIC, which he admitted the next day. Hooley was the stupid one, comparing the 1200 people watching crew stadium's bigscreen (on a monday) for USA's opening match to a columbus clippers baseball game attendance. Hooley tries to become more like Cowherd everyday.

or when herbie is talking about how he can't get into soccer (despite trying by watching a whopping 1 match)... yet he gets so choked up over the stanley finals crowd singing the anthem when the singer stopped. Yeah, b/c soccer fans don't sing in unison all game long or anything :roll2:

---

sidenote, has anyone received a 'flop' card yet? I was cautiously excited about that promise, as it is what kept me from following soccer as closely after HS.

Argentina looks very solid again today. 6-0 over Serbia & Montenegro with less than 5 minutes left.

Interesting that it's still Serbia & Montenegro when Montenegro declared their independence on June 3rd after a close public vote on May 21 (not that anybody noticed). Serbia just officially recognized the independence of Montenegro yesterday.

Man, that is going some to put that many goals up on the board - no matter that it is Serbia & Montenegro.
Though S&M had a man ejected most of the damage was already done well ahead of that point, with the score being 3-0 at half-time. Argentina is serving notice that they have all the pieces in place to go far in the tournament.

OK, Argentina has convinced me they are for real, obviously...just a soccer murder today.

Too bad the IC won't advance, but I don't think this is the last time we'll see them by a long shot.
