OK, Argentina has convinced me they are for real, obviously...just a soccer murder today.

Too bad the IC won't advance, but I don't think this is the last time we'll see them by a long shot.

Agreed. They created a lot of holes in the Dutch defense. The Argentina-Netherlands game should be a nice contest to see who wins the group.

With van Nistelrooy doubtful, and multiple Dutch players riding yellow cards, I suspect we will see more of the Crespo and Messi show - which would still make for the best play of the tournament.

Poor damned Ivory Coast. They provided, with the Dutch, some of the best play seen yet in any game, and they played so much better than S&M against Argentina in their opener, yet they now are destined to return home. They are thus far - and by a country mile - the best team not to get through to the next round.

To add insult to injury today they were totally jobbed by the ref in this game. Drogba gets a truly lousy yellow card, and thus misses the final match against S&M. Meanwhile the yellow shirted blind man misses what could have been a PK earlier in the game. Only the high level of play from both teams overcame this official's ineptitude and its impact on the outcome of the game.
In fairness it should be mentioned that the ref was an equal opportunity idiot. There were daft decisions he made that added to the needless tally of yellow cards on the Dutch side, Robben in particular was hit with a needless yellow for no good reason.
Basically, if it was a foul, the ref wouldn't call it, if it wasn't he issued a yellow card. Pure stupidity.

The one player I might single out from CIV for wasting chances would be Arouna Kone - if he makes good use of the many chances that fell his way we would not be talking about the importance of a Dutch vs Argentina game. Well, not in the terms we currently use - for winner of group.

The League of Under-Achieving Soccer Nations

Its the 63rd minute of Portugal vs Iran and they finally avoid automatic induction into The League of Under-Achieving Soccer Nations with a long-range rocket from Deco.

Charter members of the LUASN - England.

Petitioning for removal from the list of candidates this afternoon, the USA?

Who else deserves a berth?

What drama - PK awarded as Ghana breaks through the box, red card (for dissent? Ujfalusi), first PK attempt blown off (premature) and the taker gets a yellow card.
PK attempt - hits the woodwork.
Ghana misses an opportunity to seal the deal.

As this game has gone on it is clear how much the Czech side miss Koller in the middle - and how valuable Petr Cech is in goal.

OK - a richly deserved goal for Ghana - Cech was unable to stop every shot.
If the US takes care of business against Italy then Italy stands to meet a very depleted Czech team in the last of their group games.
I don't have a full tally of yellows but it will be interesting to see if Ghana loses any key personnel for the last meeting with the USA.

EDIT - the yellow against Gyan (because he heard the whistle to call Ujfalusi over for his red card ejection - and fired the ball into the net on the first PK attempt) results in his missing the match aginst the States. And, Muntari who put in the second goal is also going to be missing in action.

Awesome game. Ghana played extremely well, especially going forward, but once again they showed that they're a very dirty side. They kicked just about anything that moved, and somehow just 20 fouls were called against them.

And now with Ujfalusi and Lokvenc (plus Koller and Baros) ruled out of the CR's game against Italy, and Gyan and Muntari out of Ghana's game against the U.S., the ball's definately in the Americans' court.

Hard to believe what we saw today. The Czech team not only lost, but seemed sluggish and unimaginative....Cech excluded, of course. It seemed like the first really early goal rattled their cages more than I thought it would. No doubt, that even if the U.S. gets a draw today, they're still right in it. They're going to have to play as well as they can just to get a draw, and better than they can for a win though.

Congrats to Ghana....I don't think anyone thought that Ghana would be the team that posted Africa's first victory.
