Game Thread Wisconsin 13, tOSU 31 (Oct 10, 3:30 ET, ABC/ESPN)

Defensive ranks of the teams Wisconsin has faced.

Northern Ill- rush 60th, pass 64th, total 55th, scor defense 35th
Fresno St-rush 74th, pass 74th, total 74th, scor defense 87th
Wofford (div 2)-rush 87th, pass 42nd, total 61st, scor defense 98th
Mich St- rush 22nd, pass 93rd, total 49th, scor defense 64th
Minn- rush 96th, pass 50th, total 81st, scor defense 64th

Best total defense-Mich St(49th) and Wisconsin went for 436
Best scor defense- North ILL(35th) and Wisconsin put up 28

OSU is 30-40 rank spots better(9th-total, 8th-scoring) than the 2 best defensive teams Wisconsin has faced. OSU held a similar offense to 313(USC) and 86 of that was on the last drive. I do not think Wisconsin will wear OSU down the same way(offensive line isn't as good).

Plus Wisconsin has the worst defense of all the remaining undefeated teams. OSU should be able to sustain long drives(wisconsin 90th in 3rd down defense and 63rd in 1st downs allowed).

I just noticed this fact in browsing the NCAA stats.

Wiscy is averaging 6.55 points per red zone possession (first in the nation). They have 18 TDs and 2 FGs in 20 red zone chances.

JT just said no Larimore this week, but Boom should be good to go.

Andrew Miller hasn't practiced for a few days due to the flu.

I'm pretty excited about seeing Rose get some playing time on the line...

This should be a GREAT game, games like this are why I love B10 football!

Plus, the beard is looking good, which means the Bucks will just continue to pour it on...respect the beard!

I am concerned about the offensive line this week.(Flu) I don't like moving guys(the tackles) around. Really it would be JB to LT and Hall would get the start at RT. Maybe Miller will get in after a while? Not the ideal situation. But at least JB and Hall will have been there all week.

I just watched the Wiscy-Minne game on ESPN360. Every time Wiscy sent a man in motion, the run went behind that man. For the first few hundred times they ran it (seemed like that much anyway), they always ran to the side that he went in motion toward. After that, they mixed it up, having the man in motion keep going into the line at the snap or having him cut back and lead the play to the opposite side of the center. But EVERY time, the play followed the man who had gone in motion.

The only exception to this was late in the game on Wiscy's last scoring drive. They ran a naked boot-leg to break the established tendency, and it went for a LOT of yards (40-50). The tackle that drifted out to block for the QB (ok, it was a semi-nude boot-leg) didn't even have anyone to block. If Tolzien had any wheels, that play would have scored.

If our DEs stay home to defend the naked boot, we don't have to worry about it. With that being the case, the Wiscy running game is very easy to read. Minne was able to stop them for the first half; but after a sudden change (int) in the 3rd quarter, the thin Minnesota DL began to wear down. If the flu doesn't decimate the Buckeye front 7, I like Ohio State's chances.

As for Wisconsin's defense; it is VERY susceptible to the type of running game that Ohio State has developed in the last couple of weeks. They are also highly vulnerable to a credible passing threat. If Pryor can put together a few good possessions in a row, the Badgers are in big, big trouble.

Bucky's defense is giving up 24+ per game! Their pass defense is very suspect. (Badger fans seem to think we have played no one and their defense is as good as USC's? You can't make this stuff up!)
Their offense vs our defense will be very interesting as they show good balance and can score a lot. So, basically Bucky has won in shoot-outs!
Not gonna happen this week!

They're completely off their rocker. I've read some of their posts and they must be drunk. We win by at least two scores....I call 31-13.

OSU to face another different offense
Badgers present 'great challenge,' Tressel says

At 6-1 and 248 pounds, Wisconsin running back John Clay averages 5.2 yards per carry and more than 115 yards per game. The Buckeyes, however, rank first in the Big Ten against the run.

BLADE SPORTS WRITER
COLUMBUS - In five football games this season, the Ohio State defense has seen the triple option of Navy, the power and pro style attack of Southern California, the frenetic no-huddle spread offense of Toledo, the Illinois option with its running quarterback, and Indiana's unbalanced approach with three tight ends. If the No. 9 Buckeyes (4-1, 2-0) thought they had covered everything on the menu, they should hold that thought. Wisconsin (5-0, 2-0) is coming to town this weekend with its old-fashioned knock-down brand of football that has remained en vogue in Badger land while most of the world has resorted to other tactical approaches. It's meat and potatoes, but the Buckeyes haven't seen anyone serve that up, not yet. "They haven't looked at same thing twice," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said about his defenders, who rank first in the Big Ten in overall defense, allowing just 252 yards per game.

Ohio State football
Badgers, flu have hit OSU hard
In face of illness, Buckeyes prepare for physical game

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As he watched last year's game against Wisconsin, Ohio State linebacker Austin Spitler wasn't sure if it was football or demolition derby. "It was a fistfight; there were guys on the ground every play," Spitler said. "It was just unbelievable how physical the game was."
The Buckeyes' 20-17 win in Madison was memorable primarily for two reasons: freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor's leadership on the winning touchdown drive and, as Spitler said, the fierce hitting.
The spotlight was brightest on Wisconsin safety Jay Valai, who knocked two Ohio State players out of the game with concussions: receiver Dane Sanzenbacher and running back Daniel Herron.
As the teams prepare to meet Saturday in Ohio Stadium, the storylines are juicy.
It's an early test of Big Ten supremacy between two of the three teams without a loss in conference play. Ohio State (4-1 overall) and Wisconsin (5-0) are 2-0; the third team, Iowa, is 1-0 and plays host to Michigan this week.
Both Ohio State and Wisconsin likely are motivated by revenge -- the Badgers for their last-minute loss, the Buckeyes for Valai's hard hits.

Wisconsin trying to stay atop Big Ten

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 2:56 AM
By Bob Baptist
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

One of coach Bret Bielema's routines during the season is to put the Big Ten statistics on an overhead projector and highlight where Wisconsin ranks in each category compared with its opponent that week. This week, he also highlighted the top line of the standings. It shows Wisconsin an unmatched 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
"I'm not going to ignore the fact that that's where you're at," Bielema told his players. "But why are we here?"
He said his four captains answered with variations on the same theme: "Working together. Playing for each other. Doing what we need to do. Finding a way to win games."
"If we do that," Bielema told them, "we'll continue to move forward."
The Badgers come this week to their biggest hurdle in what so far has been a road of small bumps. They play at No. 9 Ohio State, whose only loss in five games is to No. 7 Southern California.
Bielema described Ohio State as "the team that's set the bar" in the Big Ten recently.
As for Wisconsin this season? "We've been able to win games," he said. "We've done some good things. But we've also done some things that haven't been so good. To get to where we need to be, to beat a quality opponent, we have to do things right all the time for 60 minutes."
Wisconsin is doing things right in the red zone. Through five games, the Badgers have scored on all 20 of their possessions in the red zone and lead the Big Ten in scoring and turnover margin
