I made the mistake to switch to Windows 10. Windows 7 worked fine for me. It didn't take long and most of what I do works fine. But some things (games) don't work anymore. Some games don't work - I log in and it flashes a black screen and then it's like I never asked the stupid game to start. Other games the graphics are wonky. I've tried to uninstall/reinstall. I've tried to reboot. My last troubleshooting abilities involve dropping a bunch of f-bombs. After that, I'm out.

Any ideas? The simpler the solutions, the better.

I would update all of your drivers and make sure you install the Windows 10 versions. If an application still acts wonky try running it in compatibility mode for Windows 7.

edit: and by updating drivers I mean actually going to the manufacturer website for your motherboard/gpu and downloading from there. They will have more up to date drivers than WinUpdate.

Upgraded my first gen i7 PC to windows 10 last week took about 30 minutes... no issues with anything... I'm actually kinda stunned.

Anyone got any good list for sites on optimizing the windows settings to clean things up a bit?

I've been debating taking the plunge. I have an older HP laptop that exceeds all the specs, and I currently dual boot Win7 and Linux. I'm leery of upgrading 7, and I see it's possible to create a partition and do a clean install of 10 to it, still keeping Win7 installed. I was wondering if anyone had gone that route and what issues you may have had etc.....

Well, to answer my own question, I downloaded the .iso from Microsoft, created a 40Gb partition on my drive, and did a clean install to there. Everything went well and is working fine, and 10 seems to run really run well on my 5 year old laptop.
The only issue I had is that with doing a clean install instead of upgrading from Windows 7, my product key didn't work to activate it. Microsoft says that you need to purchase a new key unless you upgrade first. (after that you can do a complete format and install and your key will work) Supposedly their new security measures make it impossible to fake a key, but it only took me all of 5 mins. to hack the activation and make it fully functional and activated. So much for the security improvements! Now that I've played with it a little and like it, I will probably wipe the partition, do the upgrade from my still existing Win7, and do a clean install after that so everything is legal and legit.

Thank goodness I only use my Windows partition for three games/simulators. A heck of a lot less to back up and easier to restore by just copying save files.

Ever since upgrading to 10 I've had the annoyance of having to deal with at least one, usually two BSODs every time I boot up to play a game. I decided that I might as well see if nuking the partition and doing a clean install will help. Hopefully I'll start that process tomorrow while I'm at work and be done before I leave in the evening.

And now I'm really pissed off. I nuked the Windows partition this morning, had the USB drive(s) ready to go, attempted to start the process today at work, and...it didn't recognize the USB Windows installer as an install disc. Ok, fine, I'll babysit my laptop for like 4 hours at home tonight. I get home, download the ISO from Microsoft, and...same issue. WTF!? I get no option to specify a boot image, it keeps on saying it doesn't detect an install media. I have a feeling I'll have to download a Win7 image, install that, and upgrade yet again and just hope I don't keep having to deal with BSODs every time I want to boot up Windows.
