I have a ThinkPad W520.. which is a bit cumbersome in taking apart to get to the motherboard and to add memory

I still wonder if it's some setting I screwed up while trying to be so techy
I've done everything.. from display to power settings
or could be related to other issues that started after a windows update
that's why I was wondering if I should try out W10

if I do change the battery, I may consider upgrading the video card

Video Cards cannot be upgraded in a laptop.

After spending the last 14 hours fiddling with retail release 10 enterprise at work and 10 pro at home, i have to say Cortana is very slow. And by slow I mean she's retarded.

Me: "hey Cortana! Open iTunes"
Computer opens Edge browser to Bing and searches for "How can I change?"

So if you were using the insiders preview that you upgraded from 7 or 8 don't try upgrading to 10. Now it's asking for activation and the fuckwad from MS that I'm chatting with on support is no help. I guess I have to reinstall 7 or 8 and wait for the upgrade notification. Fuck that I'm staying with the earlier version. I don't trust MS on these free upgrades.

I have been using Siri at work and it works flawlessly for me so far. Did you train your phone (takes 1-2mins) to learn your voice?

OK.. I've upgraded to Windows 10.. it's not for the timid... consumed way too much time... at least equal to Maqua's time consumption...
EVERYTHING is there.. good luck finding where it's at with Windows 10..
and most likely you're gonna have to get phone help when your virus protection corrupts

I needed Driver Detective to upgrade over a half dozen drivers

Has anyone obtained the Windows 10 update via the Microsoft website? It was released today for download and just requires a simple executable that runs, reboots, and updates your Windows 7/8 PC for free. Eventually they will roll it out via Windows Update but it's not ready for production release at this time.

If anyone does it let me know how it goes. I have three devices at home I want to eventually upgrade (Desktop, HTPC, and Laptop).

Here is how it went for me: Download took an hour or so . . . no problems during download. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T520

I was surprised to find that Microsoft has replaced their browser. IE is still there, but you get something called Edge. I have been using Edge. I imported all my favorites from IE without a problem. Am still learning about it. Less glitchy than IE. Has a "Reading View" that I like, and you can annotate the web page and save it - I haven't really tried this yet, I guess it could come in handy for a how-to page, maybe? You can highlight stuff, make a few notes. The "Read View" lets you read an article without any of the videos or pictures or other story links on either side, etc.

Problems I had:
---No sound at all after the download. I had to download a new driver for the audio, and all was well.
---I use Norton as antivirus software. It seemed to be gone . . . I wasn't sure what to make of it, but after some back and forth with Norton, found that basically, I had to reinstall it.
--An old photoshopping program disappeared. The icon was there, but it asked me to reinstall when I clicked on it. So I have to go find that DVD, now. It is a really old program . . . I don't know if there is some kind of compatibility issue or not . . . I'll find out when I reinstall.

It is pretty user friendly and I've had no problem getting used to stuff. I went from 7 - 10.

Basically, so far so good.

@Buckerooni go into Norton and try to manually pull in updates and run a scan.. that'll tell you if you are back up
My Norton looked fine... but I ran it thru some paces just to make sure
I couldn't do manually update or scans so I had to call Norton and let them have remote access
to do a total re-install but especially a clean uninstall...

The upgrade also impacted my fingerprint scanner... I tried to replace the driver myself... but needed Driver Detective to fix it
Windows Update has moved
Control Panel is different

Just a helpful tip, Norton and ie are both very antiquated and bloated software choices. They were once the industry standard but are now avoided like the plague by most it professionals.
