Why Do You Live Where You Do

Let's not stop there.

Little Rock > Detroit

Charleston, WV > Detroit

Lagos > Detroit

Baghdad > Detroit

Tehran > Detroit

Novosibirsk > Detroit

Kabul > Detroit

Slapout, AL > Detroit

You get the picture.
I agree, Portland is a pit of neo-nazis, meth and homeless hippie hell. The surrounding area of nice though.

Oregon is a beautiful state, my dad dragged to the Grants Pass area when I was young and we lived there for a few miserable years in various camper shells and glorified lean-tos. The thing I remember most about it though was off the hippies, they were everywhere

And, apparently, you were of one kind.

I guess it's like Grad21 said, I found where I belong. I miss Columbus and think about it just about every day. I was gonna stay a year. Then another year.

This city

And you also have District 10 now. Pretty decent flick.

Job brought me out here... best education in US (for my kids) kept me here...
Weather is very surprising...
Hour from the city... hour from the beach.. hour from Philly... hour from mountains...
I miss Ohio.. I miss the people... I miss my friends... I miss Midwestern values... being able to trust folks...
The level of aggressiveness out here is second to none... native folks are wired different... can't say I like it..
Cost of living here is beyond your comprehension... and beyond any sense of reasonableness...
This will not be my last stop... I am plotting as I type...

I agree, Grants Pass is a dump. I went back there just to take a trip down memory lane. I'd stopped in Medford beforehand because I went to 8th grade there and I had a pleasant lunch at an outdoor hamburger joint alongside Hwy 238, the sun was out, the birds were singing and everything around me seemed almost idealistic. I pulled into Grants Pass and the sky was dark, everything looked so economically depressed and as soon as I got out of my vehicle some methhead approached me with some bogus story about needing some money for a cab and so on. I did drive around the areas I used to know and love like Wolf Creek, Graves Creek, Galice, Mt Sexton and that was very pleasant. I took some logging road from Galice to the coast, that was a bit scary, I got up into the mountains and the fog was so thick I could barely see past the end of my truck and I had big rigs zooming past me, long drops with no guard rails.
Oregon is definitely one of the most scenic states in the country but I wouldn't want to live there again.

Different strokes for different folks, right? I don't know how observant you were raised, but there's little-to-no Jewish roots out here except for Portland.

For me, Salem isn't a wonderland, but it's serviceable. Plus, there are certain benefits to living in a state capital. I'm pleased with my job, and my family really likes it here.

Have you seen the Official Arizona State thread? I guess I'll add in weather, family and job. No need to change a good thing. Plus I like good Mexican food and illegal labor when I need it. In a car, 5 hours from San Diego, 5 hours from Vegas and 3 hours to Mexico. No snow.

My father was a rogue Jew if you read my post in this thread
http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/...7567-official-bp-family-complaint-thread.html
you'll better understand. He was raised by a well-to-do Jewish family with every advantage but his goal in life was to be a bum unfortunately. He barely made it through high school, he was content to work at a gas station afterward because it meant he could hang out with his friends, he got drafted, came back from Vietnam and went bat-shit...etc... It probably explains why I dislike hippies so much, while most people view them as peace, love dove, let's change the world, the ones I know were all about getting stoned and mooching off of others. They were all about sticking to the man while at the same time asking him for a handout.
My mother's family is jewish as is my father's side, therefore so am I but I have to be honest and say that I don't observe the holidays nor go to synagogue.
