I voted for Krenzel (NC, perfect season) and Smith (Heisman, many records), with Kern coming in a close third (even though he won an NC and led the Buckeyes to 27-2 overall record, QB play wasn't quite as important back in the late 60's as it is today; Kern's teams also lost two NC's that they really should have won).

I voted the same way, with my reasoning about the same. Although, I am and always will be a huge fan of Hoying. That team was so talented, not beating scUM in 1995 and playing for a National Championship was one the most crushing sports moments for me personally. I never saw Rex Kern play, except for highlights, game replays, etc, so it's hard for me to give him the edge over Krenzel, but it will still tough, knowing how good he was and how impressive his career was at tOSU.

Kern was a tremendous athlete in addition to his leadership he was a tremendous ball handler, a very good runner and passer. CK was not even in my equation.

Come on BB, I thought you would tell us some stories of watching Harry Workman play for QB for The Buckeyes in '23.
Well I would but you wouldn't believe just how good he was. Yupper , My Dad used to tell me stories about him. Why one time he ran thru the whole mich team and they even had 12 players on the field at the time and he scored. twice Ahuh. He got the touchdown and was so fast he kissed a cheerleader and got a date too.:wink2:

Then I would say you made a very good, informed selection in Kern. There really isn't a wrong answer here. :paranoid:

You noob's have to realize that if you were a Qb under Woody you were a special kind of guy. Woody just didn't take someone of the street and make him a Qb. He always looked for a certain kind of guy. He turned him into a quivering bowl of jelly who would puke for a year or two after every practice from his demands and then into a poised confident leader of the team. Certainly they were different as night and day in personalities ie Greene and Kern But Woody brought out their best no matter what they were like, to be continued

"you just had to go and be different didn't you?"

Yep, took Schlichter.

This is not a position where OSU produced guys who go on to the next level. It's like an All Time Reds' team, you've got a hall of famer at every position except pitcher.

I'm not saying that such a condition should or needs to be used in making a choice, but I chose to make it one.

Art's the only QB we've developed that had the ability to "take it to the next level."

My personal favorite was Tom Matte, who had a long career with the Colts (but not as a QB) and a spectacular post season as an emergency back up for Johnny Unitas.

Kern's pro career never took off and I haven't heard a peep out of Baltimore about Troy.

But pro career or not, there wasn't a name on that list that I couldn't connect to some fine buckeye memories.

I voted for Smith and Kern. If being a quarterback was simply passing numbers, I think Germaine would have been my #1 choice, with everyone else fighting for his table scraps. But I think that being a quarterback is putting the team on your shoulders and getting the most out of them, and doing what it takes to win.

Troy Smith was that type of quarterback. He beat Michigan three times - once (2004) with the inferior team, once (2005) with the superior team that had gotten into some bad luck, and once (2006) in what became the best game I've ever been to.

Kern and Krenzel, though, were tough choices. I wanted to pick them both. Krenzel often made spectacular plays to win the game. But, from what I've heard, so did Kern. They both won a national championship. I think the tie-breaker, as dumb as this sounds, was the fact that I thought it was a little cheesy to pick two quarterbacks from this century, when it's only been four quarterbacks so far (counting Zwick).

My thoughts on the Heisman, would Smith won if he played for TCU, or Stanford? No

So I give my nod to Kern and Krenzel. Krenzel did just as many amazing things without being the athlete smith was. He also did it with a group of guys that less national attention.

It still kills me to see folks judge individual positions by team accomplishments.

That is the same severely flawed logic that gets guys like Gino Torretta the Heisman.

I have seen all these guys play for their entire careers (as many on her have also), and voted for Schlichter (the most naturally talented) and for Smith (most accomplished, individually and best overall).

Might have voted for Kern, but he was just not the same after he injured his back. As a human being, though, he is tops.

I love CK as much as the next guy for his ability in the clutch, his fearlessness, and his toughness. He had obvious issues as a quarterback, though (maybe not so obvious if you can't see past 14-0).

Corny Greene was great, too. He probably had the easiest job of any tOSU QB.

I always thought Joe Germaine could have gone down as an all-time great if he had been given the opportunity to start and play the majority of the downs for all 3 years. But who am I to argue with the infinite wisdom of Cooper?
