My list of preferences now looks like this, in order. I have not considered likelihood they'd accept in compiling the list. I've excluded only pro coaches with established positions.

Tier One

Nick Saban
Pete Carroll WTF?!?!
Urban Meyer
Bill Cowher
Jon Gruden

Tier Two

Chris Peterson
Gary Patterson
Al Golden
Mike London
Tony Dungy

Tier Three

Gus Malzahn
Mike Leach
Bobby Petrino
Larry Kehres
Bob Stoops

Don't want anyone not on this list.

Pete Carroll??

If tOSU asked for resumes for the head coach job how many do you think they will get? Do you think it will attract candidates nationally?

A lot of that will depend on the NCAA sanctions. If they keep dragging this shit on and the outcome is uncertain, it will eventually hurt recruiting (coach and players).

We need a resolution to that crap ASAP. Good, bad, whatever, we just need to know what we're dealing with for the future.

Pete Carroll is an amazing recruiter but not that great of a coach. Kind of like how Calipari is at UK in basketball. Recruit, recruit, recruit... get lots of guys drafted and hopefully win a few games along the way.

Didn't he win like 3 national titles? Calipari has 0.

That is true. That is the one thing I really liked about his Trojan teams, they showed up in big games. But they also always seemed to lose games they shouldn't. Like Oregon St, Stanford, etc. Regardless, isn't he in his sixties?

Seeing Larry Kehres name in there with Bobby Petrino, and Bob Stoops, struck me as funny:biggrin:

Tier One

Nick Saban (Not leaving, would lose power in move)
Pete Carroll (Left last program with major violations)
Urban Meyer (Last program had minor violations)
Bill Cowher (does not want to coach)
Jon Gruden (just got a new deal at ESPN)

Tier Two

Chris Peterson (had great success in the WAC)
Gary Patterson (had great success in the Mt West)
Al Golden (If he left The U, it would be for State Penn)
Mike London (had success at Richmond. O.K. at Virginia)
Tony Dungy (does not want to coach)

Tier Three

Mark Dantonio (Not Leaving)
Gus Malzahn (No head coaching experience)
Larry Kehres (did great in div III)
Mike Leach (thats just crazy)
Bobby Petrino (Just a bad idea)
Bob Stoops (Not leaving)

Don't want anyone not on this list.

Peterson, Patterson and Meyer are the only ones on the list that make any (logical) sense.

Kehres may be the best pure college football coach on the list.

I disagree with those who say we "couldn't get" Nick Saban, but I think it's unlikely we'd be willing to pay the price. And I mean dollars only here.

Why would Saban want to come to Ohio State? Ohio State is going to lose scholarships in the next few years, I don't think the university/B1G would put up with the oversigning he enjoys at Alabama and he is the most powerful person on that campus right now, BOT included. Ohio State would not want to deal with Saban as well.

IIRC Saban took over and Alabama program that had some NCAA issues. So, I doubt he is adverse to that. The only thing that may intrigue Saban about tOSU is the chance to quickly rebuild the program and win an NC in the B1G. That would really throw the pundits for a loop...

I still think Gary Pinkel is a guy that shows up in this conversation at some point....especially if Meyer doesn't want the job...

He has spent a lot of time coaching in Ohio over the years: Kent State (alma mater), OSU, Toledo, Cleveland. But obviously for a guy like Saban it comes down to one thing, and the bidding starts at $6M.

That Ohio connection goes both ways, though, which is why we shouldn't even be talking about small-school out-of-staters like Peterson and Patterson. Success at OSU starts with recruiting Ohio, and there are enough big names on Buckeye-state coaching trees to leave the westerners off the list.

Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated actually did a small feature of state universities having to post a head coaching job online (using Ole Miss as his example).

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20...miss-job-application/index.html?sct=cf_t11_a2

I'm assuming if OSU decides to open up a job search and Coach Fickell isn't the answer, someone else will do a feature just like this and use Ohio State as their subject (and they'll try to make it funny and use the word 'tattoos' multiple times).
