It would be monumentally stupid because we need stability, actual and perceived, at the moment and making a wild play for the "used to be hot, but now starting the downhill slide chick who got divorced two years earlier and continues to troll the bars on the weekends" at 10:30 on a Saturday just makes us an insecure douche. We don't need Florida's trash. We are not MissState.
Urban left, was talked into staying one more year to preserve the epic recruiting class, then left a year later.

Urban being burned out is a concern, but I have no idea why you think he got divorced. The only pathetic party in that break up was UF, if anyone.

Hey! You leave my wife out of this!

Back on point, if LF beats TSUN, Nebraska, and the Hippies from Madison he will have a job next year. He could lose a close one to Illinois and still survive if he won the other three.

:oh:

Good intel scoonie.

Rugby, to quote Sam Wyche - "You don't live on Scout".

We don't have to pursue Urban publically.

And to dismiss him as a has been is pure folly.

He along with Tressel, Carroll and Stoops are the pre-eminent coaches in the sport.
He is still young.
If he still has the fire he would be the home run hire that would set the CFB world on fire.
There simply is no debate about his chops as a HC. What you think of him personally is a different matter.

I would support a Urban hire if it wasn't just to hire a big name if LF had a good season. As long as Urban doesn't bring Tebow with him.

I don't know nor have I said anything about Urban personally. I do dispute whether hiring him next year over Fickell is a sound strategic decision. I don't care whether you agree with that or not. Although I doubt it, Fickell may turn out to be a catastrophic failure as a head coach this season. If that happens, then, obviously, you replace him and, just as obviously, in that situation Meyer would be on the short list. If, on the other hand, Fickell turns in a solid performance and we continue with recruiting momentum coming back from the Tat5 debacle, it would be stupid to replace him. Again, that is obviously simply my opinion, and, although I admittedly and absolutely do not live on Scout or any similar message board, it is not without substantive basis. Attempting to bludgeon me with repeated blows of questionable grammar and coherence is not going to change anything.

Great post from scoonie. I love hearing about the emotion and attitude on this team. There are lots of ways you can go about things -- cool and professional, emotional and motivated, us-versus-the-world, and a variety of styles work. Teams often reflect their coach, and I take all of that as a sign that Luke's style is taking hold. That doesn't make it better or worse than Tressel's; it just means that this is now his team, which is nothing but a positive under the circumstances.

It's also not surprising that Gene Smith stopped by. He's clearly expecting to be the person making a decision about who the head coach is going to be in the future, and given that it's looking like we're on our way out of the NCAA woods, it's a safe bet that he'll be staying on as AD. I also happen to think that's good news for Coach Fickell. A new AD would want to make his own splashy hire to announce his arrival. Smith is more likely to want to promote from within the staff as that shows confidence that the issues were not systemic and that "cleaning house" wasn't required.

please, no Urban. Ugh. that's not based on his "chops" but on him. I just don't see him coming in to CBus and being a leader of men.

I like Fickell because he has the gravitas to fight Hoke for the next ten years. His resume, his credentials, are as S&G as Earle Bruce or Woody Hayes. He is the first OSU HC to have played at OSU since Bruce. I love that.

Maybe I also like that LF is so freaking young, and has no HC experience, so he's not supposed to be successful. He's a long shot, but he's a gamer.

I support just about any OSU coach or player, but Fickell is movie-script perfect.

If he falls flat on his face, que sera, sera.

Go Bucks!

"His resume" say what.

I quit reading after that.

His resume is nice; for a MAC HC position. It is orders of magnitude light for tier 1 program such as OSU.

I wish him well.

And his lack of a resume does not proclude him from success.

Yea, I really hate Luke.

By pointing out that he has never been a HC, it means I hate him.

Nice conclusion.

Look OSU should not be a school for OJT (assistant coaches), that is for the Purdues of the world.
OSU is a top 5 job in the country, one that should mitigate risk and hire a proven HC.
There is a proven HC, with Ohio ties who is not coaching at the moment. Maybe the most proven. There is another who is a former captain at OSU and has brought a former powerhouse back to prominence.
It is a good time to be in the market if you are OSU.

I hope Luke is the next Bob Stoops (strike lightening with an assistant).
He has been dealt a tough hand.

I'm one of the few on here who hasn't placed a number of wins as the criteria for his garnering the gig full-time.

Luke in effect has a been given the opportunity for a test drive.

PS: Woody had been a HC.

And I do realize we are dealing with the hand that was dealt. I hope Luke proves himself worthy, but to pretend there are not concerns is folly.
