If I'm being honest, I'd have to say Willie Mays (from a pure performance standpoint). But the homer in me wants to say Joe Morgan (my childhood hero). Since he wasn't on the list, I voted for Rose. He was (and probably still is) a jerk in person, but he's the guy that you never wanted to play against because you knew he was going to find a way to beat you.

As a side note, I remember that Rose got booed at every opposing ballpark every time he came to the plate. And he got booed even more whenever he drew a walk because he used to throw the bat away and run to first base. I just know the people were thinking "that arrogant s.o.b. is going to beat us again."

Pete, with his major problems, he is one of the GREATEST players ever. As a 34 y/o male, Pete Rose, as a ballplayer, was one of my heroes......noone in my generation played the game like it should be played. Ty Cobb, Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, Joe Jackson and did I say Ted Williams..:wink:...those are players that played the game like it should be played......

It, IMHO, doesn't matter what Pete did off the field......

I think Ruth is easy as best all-time. Great names mentioned here, and I do think Pete deserves Top-10 recognition for the hits record in the "relief pitcher" era. Mays, Mantle, Williams- add Dimaggio and Gehrig onto the list and one of my favorites as a kid in Roberto Clemente. Clemente didn't have the power numbers, but in terms of "baseball player" he took a backseat to no one. Peace.

That's a tough one for me, but I think if he had never hurt his knee Mickey Mantle would have been the best ever. When he started his career, not only could he hit the ball, but he played a great outfield and ran like a gazelle. He was truly one of the great stories of MLB history.

My opinion that he's not in the top-10 is based solely on his playing career. Look at the top 10 guys in the other thread, and I don't believe that Pete belongs in that elite group.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Ruth hit more home runs in certain seasons than whole teams!

That's like a guy these days hitting over 100 HR's in a season!

I was unable to find the stats on what team hit the least amount of homeruns last season to use as a comparison.

Come on. He is the definition of a "ball player" He played everywhere and at a high level. I am not going to argue about the #1 thing, but your statement is absurd.
