1e. Any Michigan loss (especially 1996, and 1995, and 1969....)

In the grand scheme of things, the two losses this season are meaningless - we'd need to take them both back before the Bucks would be in the national championship picture, and that's all I really care about.

I hate this thread! I wish I had read through it more before I voted. (I voted that I want back the PSU loss for the obvious: Big Ten title, BCS auto bid, sitting at #3 with a chance at the NC game, etc). But after reading through the thread, I did not want to change my vote, I wanted to simply retract my vote.

I picked Penn St. because I'm not sure we are better than Texas, (a 10 game series would be pretty even in my mind) but I know we are better than PSU. That game really pissed me off watching it.

Texas for sure. We beat Texas...I think we'd be #2 in the BCS with the way the computers love us even with 2 losses...we'd probably be ranked 3rd in the polls, but we'd probably make up so much ground in the computers that we'd already be packing our bags for pasadena. I don't think we'd be ranked behind Penn State...even though they beat us. The humans would have it close, but the computers would have us higher.

First thing I thought of as well. I voted Texas because it would have given us a fighting chance at the Roses...

EDIT: And if we didn't get in, it would have at least given the Big 10+1 a chance for the NC in the Rose Bowl where we belong...JMHO

The one thing I like about these polls that have discussion threads attached to them is that you can explain the context of your vote.

To wit, I voted for the Texas game because I reject one of the underlying assumptions of the poll. The implication of this poll is that you can only take away one loss, and must therefore examine each game in a vacuum, outside of any seasonal context. My vote for Texas is based on a firm belief that you CANNOT take that loss out of the context of the Penn State match-up. If we had beaten Texas, we would have won at PSU IMHO.

BTW: To those who suggest we got our butts kicked in Crappy Valley: No we didn't. We threw a bad interception. We outgained them in yards and first downs, in spite of Troy not yet having his shit together. The game was handed to PSU, not taken by them. V. Young took the game in the 'Shoe the way that Leinart and Bush together took the game in South Bend.

I disagree on both counts:

First, Texas outgained us by 127 yards, and all but shut us down when they kept turning the ball in their territory...you have to tip your hats to their defense for that. With three turnovers in their territory the first 30:41 of the game, it had a possibility of becoming a huge blowout, but it didn't turn out that way. Keep in mind they were in our place, in the most hyped OOC game possibility in our history, and they still won. Yeah, if Hamby catches the TD pass we win, yada yada. Even if he did and we won the game, Texas played us even throughout.

Second, Penn State didn't kick our asses, at least no worse than we did theirs. Keep in mind the playing conditions were shitty, and we shut down their offense as much as they did ours. We had 35 more yards and five more first downs. Turnovers were key, as we lost a fumble and an interception while they didn't commit a single turnover...only the bad decision by Troy resulting in the INT return to our 2 yard line kept this from being an epic overtime game. We went into a way-better-than-anyone-realized team's place, that had fans that had been camping our for a whole week just for this game (one of their biggest games in their storied history) and still played them dead even. The ass-kicking was definitely mutual.

yeah what mili said.

I would still eliminate Texas loss...because the game was played in Columbus and I hate to lose at home.

Penn State for me and it's not even close. We played terrible on a national stage, it would give us an outright Big Ten title...not to mention that it would've smacked all those cocky Penn State fans down a notch. Keeping the Lions in their proper place as a second tier conference team.

I'd like to rather go back and grab that bastard that gave Troy Smith money and make him an offer he couldn't refuse to not do it. Having Smith with the team in the bowl, off-season and first game and I think we would be undefeated.

I think...

I think that Texas was the better team of the two. Also, beating PSU would have given us an outright big ten championship. I would rather definitely have that than an outside chance at the Rose Bowl. On the downside, I'm happy for JoePa to be doing so well this year. He should go out in style, something that Woody couldn't do, unfortunatley (god bless his soul).

Penn State.

I was unimpressed with Penn State. It didn't look to me like they beat the Bucks. The Bucks just didn't play well. Of course, that's how a defensive battle tends to appear, and I give Penn State credit in beating the Bucks.

And a win over PSU gives the Bucks the outright Big10 championship. The win over Texas doesn't really do much for the Bucks. Though, I'd guess that Penn State would be in the championship game, which may not be so bad.

Texas was a begining-of-the-year game. It was an epic game by both teams, despite the unhappy ending, and Ohio State was still trying to smooth out the QB spot. Put the Troy Smith who beat Michigan a couple weeks ago in that game, and Ohio State wins by 17.

All that, and now I've noticed the hibernating PSU fans coming out of their hiding spots. They've gone from good-natured fans of a legendary team to throwing bottles of urine at the OSU marching band.
