Which CB Will Replace Fox?

Many good points in this thread. My $.02.

I think Whitner is currently the best candidate for the boundary corner. Has many of the same strengths as Fox. Great quickness, great athletic ability, solid tackler. Plus, it would help alleviate the logjam at safety and get more of our best athletes on the field.

Still, there's a great deal of development that will occur between now and then--winter conditioning, summer conditioning and 7 on 7s, not to mention the spring and fall drills. Someone is likely to emerge and it could be a surprise. Who, last year at this time, picked Youbouty to emerge as a dominant force on the open side?

I don't see Ginn at DB, for many of the same reasons others have cited. I also don't think it's wise to count on a true freshman stepping up (Jamario), but I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised.

At the end of last season Kudla was coming up big with the pressure and rarely if ever lost contain. Remember he lost a lot of time to that terrible illness and I think we only got to see about 5 games worth of what Mike can really do.

Agreed, but during a 3 game slide when we were getting killed on the edges, young speed would have been welcomed.

Kudla's last few games were solid...scUM and the Alamo were outstanding.

He will be a solid contributor next year...throw in a serious threat on the other side, and he will be a monster. Think of Fraser's production opoosite Smith as opposed to Kudla....the speed opens doors.

Let me play Devil's Advocate here....

I have faith in Teddy as a phenomenal athlete....

However, as shown by his first few games at WR, one cannot get by on just pure athleticism in major CFB.

Shutting down WRs in major D1 is VERY different from lining up across from someone at Glenvile and knowing the other coach or QB is not dumb enough to try you...

If Teddy does play any defense...expect growing pains.

I read a quote from Deion Sanders where he talked about winning 2/3 of the time as a DB...that is 66% from possibly the greatest man-to-man coverage corner of our generation.

I can't annoint Teddy as a defensive stopper without him seeing a snap yet.
Agreed, TG when asked why it took so many game to get him involved, he admitted he wasn't ready. He has the ability to play CB, but it will take a little bit of time.

He has the ability to play CB, but it will take a little bit of time.

Come the first game TG will have had a Spring practice, two fall practices, and an entire season under his belt. There is also a very good chance this season will be his penultimate - so he don't have all that much time.

While I agree that there is a large learning curve to CB you must also consider the havoc a kid with Ginn's speed and quickness can play on a QB trying to read a D. Nothing downfield will be safe with TG out there.

I don't look for him to be a starter this year but I absolutley look for him to play in special situations and rotate in as part of the two deep.

In any case, I can't find the vBet that I thought I set up on this, but I will be doing one for the Spring game and possibly another for the regular season if there is still a question.

might have had more to do with depth though?
i think it is a lot to ask especially in our defenive scheme that is very assignment

based and not much bump and run man coverage.

WHitner was the nations #1 CB when coming out of glenville anyone think he may move over to CB in a pinch? we have much more depth at S than CB
Actually, Springs did.

I like the idea of SirJo to starting S, freeing up lights out to move over to CB. That is, of course, assuming that guys like Michael Roberts, Nick Patterson and Jamario O'Neal aren't better cover corners than Whitner. Actually, Patterson may also be a S, I forget at this point. O'Neal may be better than all these people, I guess time will tell. Whoever gets the nod is going to be tested early and often. The job Youboty did on Edwards will be enough that teams next season will shy away from him. In my opinion, anyway.

Well I like Serjio playing at corner because he's a very nice tackler. what I've been thinking is that by spring ball Teddy will go both ways and they'll see if someone steps up at reciever. I highly expect Dukes (who will be back IMO),Lyons, Hall, and Jordan will all step up to the plate. I would also think that its up to EJ Underwood right now, and if he can't do it then look for Ginn to play more defense until someone settles into that spot.

what I'd LIKE to see:

CB: Underwood/Welch Nickle back: Whitner/Mitchell
CB: Youboty/O'neil
OLB: Carpenter
MLB: D'Andrea/Schlegal
OLB: Hawk
DE: Kudla/Gholston
DE: Richardson/Worthington
DT: Green
DT: Pitcock
SS: Salley
FS: Whitner

Ginn on Offense is just hell for another defense to plan for, and if you take him away the defense starts to do the SAME THINGS..... Key in on stopping the run, take that away, and just blitz non stop forcing our QB to hurry his throws. If you have him on offense however they can't blitz cuz a short pass to teddy with no one back to stop him is stupid, plus that can't run blitz or again they'll be left very vulnerable in the open field. Now I believe Holmes will also be better than he was last year, and maybe track will get him a step faster, but having him, teddy, and Gonzo to go along with all those potential talent is just sick.

Discussion is good

Here's a scenario. Underwood doesn't get it together and leaves the program. Youboty gets hurt in the first game of the season and will be out the same amount of games that Fox missed.

1. Who will step in. Name the best two candidates for replacement at CB
2. Although this is a hypothetical situation, it's not that far fetched. Do you feel comfortable with the options the coaching staff has for replacing the starters?

Here are some choices of potential players.
Listed as CB
Ginn. Great athlete who leaves little doubt he could play corner. Only drawback may be that it might take him a few games into the season to make the adjustment. But he can do it.
Roberts Has he seen the field, not including special teams?
B. Underwood and Lane See above. I guess Lane played CB in high school and was projected as a CB. But if I remeber correctly Underwood was projected as a saftey, can he play corner?

Listed as Safties
Whitner. Great athlete who can lay the wood. He was projected as a corner coming out of Glenville but was moved to safty (probably to see the field faster, he's good). He probably could move to CB and suceed.
Salley, Everett and Mitchell All three are safties, end of story.
Welch, Lukens and Patterson Listed as safties and were projected as safties coming out of high school (Lukens was also projected at LB). There's still plenty of time for these guys to develop into corners if not safty, but they may be naturally suited for safty. Esp. Lukens, him switching to CB ain't happening.

Coming in (way to early to tell)
O'Neal Great athlete with a big body for a CB. People have brought up the game against Manningham, but who doesn't have a bad game now and then. The only problem I can forsee for O'Neal is he may OUTGROW the CB position. Jenkins Projected as a corner I think. What position did he play in HS? I heard saftey and CB.
Amos, Russell, Lennix, Hartline and Washington WR, , RB, Saftey, or CB? I've only heard Amos mentioned as a possible CB. Lennix will play either LB or Saftey

I think Springs redshirted and then started after his reshirt year. It's funny because in his first year as a starter, opposing teams were throwing more at M. Kerner who was senior then at Springs.

bukIpower has a list that is almost perfect.

I would put Schlegal above D'Andrea because Schlegal finally caught back up with the speed of the game by the end of the season. Don't get me wrong D'Andrea is still an great talent and will see plenty of playing time. Ginn will surely see time on defense this year, exspecially if one of the corners get hurt. He may not play a significant role, but I could really see him coming in at nickle from time to time.

No way Sirjo plays at corner. Duane said he was kept off the field on D because he was having trouble in coverage at safety.

Well last time we heard Welch was 2nd string corner for bowl week? So I'm just going by what I've heard....

Reason I put D'Andrea ahead was just simply because of pass protection.... that and plus He's my favorite player has something to do with it. haha

if Youboty were to go down to injury then yeah I'd like to see ginn move over. Hopefully Jamario can come in an surprise us all! or maybe anderson russell can get on the field early? who knows? bottom line I think is that Ginn is just way too important to our offense to take him off......

Fox did and he wasn't even a CB

I'm not expecting to see Jamario step in right away. That's expecting an awful lot from him, although I've seen him play and he has the physical ability, without a doubt. I guess in my mind, Whitner would be the best option we have. Put Everett in at SS and let Donte man the CB spot opposite AY. That would be a good secondary, especially considering how much we play zone coverage. Good tacklers seem to be preferred over blanket-corners and Whitner has been pretty good at tackling in his first 2 years.
