Which CB Will Replace Fox?

I can't buy into Ginn playing any defense and I'm not 100% certain EJ would even get the starting boundary corner spot should he be available. If he becomes eligible again I see him backing up Youboty. If not and all the safety to corner talk rings true I could see:

CB1st - Youboty/Whitner
CB2nd - B.Underwood/Welch
Nickle - Welch (until we see Jamario play)

Honestly, guys are moved from CB to Safety for a reason. I'm sure some guys could move back if needed, but I also think too many posters are not considering Lane, Brandon Underwood, and possibly even Sirjo, although I believe he is definite SS material.

I just have a gut feeling that JamO will be seeing major PT by the Iowa game.

Sounds like a great vBet for Oh8 to set up though....

grad is right in that CBs are moved to S for a reason, and that reason is nearly always not being not up to snuff as a corner. In Whitner's case, he could still be a good corner, but the staff felt he was simply better suited at safety, so he could've been an exception to the rule. Still, he's been at safety since day one and will most likely stay there (ala Fox staying permanently at corner once he was moved from safety).

We have three guys who are listed as pure safeties:

Nate Salley
Tyler Everett
Donte Whitner

We have three guys listed as pure corners:

Mike Roberts
E.J. Underwood
Ashton Youboty

We have seven others listed simply as defensive backs, in other words, undetermined:

De'Angelo Haslam
Shaun Lane
Brandon Mitchell
Nick Patterson
Antonio Smith
Brandon Underwood
Sirjo Welch

Of the undetermined seven, five are freshmen (four true and one redshirt). This means we still have plenty of time to see who performs better at what position and who rises to the top at that position. So, aside from the three pure safeties and Youboty at the one corner, that leaves nine kids with a chance at the other starting corner spot. I personally look for one or two of the youger pups to really surprise during camp. I know Mitchell and Welch were on special teams throughout last season (I think Haslam may have been, too), so that tells me they probably have the inside track at the two-deep in the secondary...whether or not that secondary position is at corner remains to be seen.

I believe Donte was moved to safety when he first got here because that was the quickest way to get him on the field. When he came in, we were set at corner for the next two years with Gamble (if he would've stayed) and Fox, but we were breaking in two new safeties. Remember, he was the #1 ranked CB when he came out, so I think his move to Safety was just a matter of the best players playing. Now for whether or not it's a permanent move.......

What the the chance of Shaun Lane getting PT.
I've read some good things about him and some reports of him struggling...

Honestly, its hard to tell how much a kid will contribute based only on that first year...unless they are an exceptional talent ala Ginn.

He has had a season in the sytem, a winter in the weightroom & speed/agility work, and countless hours of film study...

With that in mind, he has as much of a chance as anyone else at this point...

If a new CB needs to be broken in, this is definitely a great year for it when you consider the defensive help he will receive in front and behind. I'd look for a number of guys to get major reps until one stands out.

Too early now, but I just put a memo on my calendar to do something in August.
Grazie. I should have known you were on top of it

Yeah there was an atricle back sometime during last year about Lane and also Patterson on Theozone. The articles said they were very impressive for first year guys. Who knows about whitner though? I think he could do both, but they like to keep him at saftey I'm sure. Either way I think we'll be just fine! GO BUCKS!

I thought Whitner played a little CB against Washington in '03 before they moved him to safety. Hopefully the Spring Game can answer a lot of questions. I'm still hoping Michael Roberts steps up.
I hope he contributes too, but he's entering his fourth season and hasn't done much to date.

I agree Whitner was moved to safty to see the field early, but you got to wonder if there are other reasons.

Recruiting pure cover CBs this year has to be a priority. Losing Underwood and who knows maybe Youboty (NFL??) would leaves us thin on depth. No more safties damn it, I want CB's.

osu1987....They won't throw Ginn's way as described in the Ohio PA all-star game. So INTS might be less than you think and so would handling the ball.

Goodbuck....Flip your hypothetical around. Imagine Ginn being switched to CB with spot play at WR. Now Holmes goes down with an injury. You have very little Ginn or no Holmes on offense. What do you think! Neither situation is good.

TG makes the offense players around him much better.

But more importantly, when TG plays offense he makes the defense MUCH, MUCH better. When the offense was barely scoring points early in the season, our defense played games like Northwestern (conservative/soft). But when our offense started to ring up points at the end of the season, our coaches turned the great defensive athletes lose!

Ginn on Offense = Better offense & better defense IMO. I would play him the majority of the time on offense and spot play on defense. All this speculation depends on who steps up more...the WR or DB group.
