Biggest personnel thing was Bryant's replacement. They chose the senior, the more experienced one. Could things have turned out worse had we gone with the true Fr? Maybe. But as long we got absolutely no production out of Bryant's old spot we were never winning the NC.

Bryant may have been a vocal guy for us and I hope this isn't taken as bashing but if he didn't help our defense all of last year and certainly didn't help against cal and Wisconsin this year. Then IMO he wasn't going to be a difference maker for our team this year if he would've been in. Better then Pitt? Yeah, but his play was not the difference between great and poor defense.

IMO next year with bigger and longer DBS we will be better then this years secondary. Burrows, Powell, and bell are All going to be different than this years.

Heck both Powell and burrows are over 6 foot and over 210. Now add vonn at secondary and it's going to be a different breed back there. Now let's just get these guys some coaching.

Recruiting ratings are fun on the first Wednesday of February, but that's about all that they are good for. Every recruit enters Ohio State as a 0* college football player. A third of those guys leave Ohio State as 0* players (injuries, transfers, dismissals). Another third develop into mediocre college players (2* and 3*), guys who can make minor contributions. The final third become your starters and major contributors (4*), the core of the team. A third of that final third become star players (5*). So in any given recruiting class, seven or eight guys will become solid college players, with two or three of them becoming stars. The players listed above fall into that middle third (2* and 3*), or at least they should be there, but too many of them have been thrust into starting roles due to injuries and poor recruiting.

Using your logic, the coaching staff should be able to come up with a successful scheme for Melvin Fellows (5*), Dorian Bell (5*), Dominic Clarke (4*), Jamie Wood (4*), Scott McVey (4*), Jamel Turner (4*), DerJuan Gambrell (4*), Kenny Hayes (4*), David Perkins (4*), Se'von Pittman (4*), Najee Murray (4*), and Jeremy Cash (3*).

Cash would probably be an improvement over what we currently have at Safety. Just saying.

Bottom line, we just need more talent in the back 7. A big step forward starts with Mr McMillan next week. We have to land him. We're recruiting great athletes, we just have to develop them. Urban knows how to recruit great DBs, just look at who he had on his Florida teams, almost all of his DB starters are in the NFL now.

If we cant develop guys like Apple, Conley, Burrows, Webb, Lattimore, etc. Then I'll wanna make some coaching changes. And when people wanna bash Fickell, you better not forget about Coombs and Withers, they coach the DBs. Guys are just getting beat, missing tackles, and taking horrible angles to the ball. We better slap a band-aid on this for the orange bowl, or else Boyd and Watkins are going to go off.

I remember a time not so long ago, where I looked forward to watching the defense impose its will on the opposing offense. I loved it. I want that back.

Was it just me or did the DL rotation all but disappear the last several games. It was almost constantly Bosa/Bennett/Washington/Spence... I know these guys are outstanding but we have(had I'm assuming) depth at that position, I thought we would be rotating new DLs every few series?

I know Shutt looked dinged up. Hale was out there quite a bit. Spence had a real problem getting any kind of rush this game. He just doesn't seem to handle big linemen that can move very well.

That is why I dusted off the Wither's thread which was withering away on page 6.

Spence seems more like an OLB in a 3-4 system than a true DE in a 4-3. Insanity talk but is there any possibility of him playing LB next year?

This is what I was thinking...the play just could not have got any worse from that position after Bryant got hurt. Even if Bell played poorly, there would be no drop off and he would be getting valuable experience. I understand giving the spot to the senior when it seems as if its even, but there has to be adjustments when someone repeatedly does not perform. Then there is Grant who I thought played fairly well to start the year and appeared to regress as the season went along...on the other hand Burrows looked to be coming on strong. I definitely would have liked to see Burrows some. Regardless, I really hope to see a heavy dose of Burrows, Bell, and maybe Apple in the bowl to get us ready for next year. You get valuable experience and I just don't see how there could be a performance drop off.

Curious as to why Burrows came in for Grant and Reeves comes in for Roby. Does it matter in the scheme what side they play? Wouldn't they learn both or is the assignment transition that different?

Our safety play has been as bad as scUM's comedic efforts circa 2009-10. It has been an abomination. I've never seen so many receivers running wide open 15+ yards down the field. They seem to bite on every fake. Simply HAS to get better next year.

I'm pretty confident... Urban built duplicity into a number of his assistant positions... with full expectation he would be losing numerous after the 'two year commit" .. that way he's never starting from scratch... it's his managerial back-up succession plan...

The most obvious answer to the thread title is coaching. How is it that Meyer can come in, install a completely new scheme with players that aren't "his guys", and turn this into a top 10 offense in two years? We've been running the same defensive scheme for nearly 10 years and yet this defense has regressed every year since 2011. Sure as hell sounds like coaching to me.
