Outside of Roby and Shazier, I didn't see a single DB or LB that was consistently able to shed blocks. Roby had his tackling issues, but at least he could get off/around a block. C. Grant really struggled in this department, which surprised me considering his size and strength.

Biggest problem was safety play by far. Pitt Brown took some horrible angles(highlighted by the long TD in the B1G CG) and was usually a step too slow or late. Barnett was a mixed bag. Made some great plays then followed them with poor ones. If Withers is responsible for them, I think it may be time to go in a different direction.

I don't understand how guys can't know what their job is. I know they practice like the world is coming to an end. No way should guys forget what they are doing and completely blow assignments.

Communication has to be God awful and I can't really pinpoint who is to blame for that. Lack of leadership has to be the main culprit.

Well it appears that through the excellent recruiting being done by UFM and his group of assistants, we are going to find out exactly what the issue is going forward, because the perception of the lack of talent on defense and especially in the back 7 is going to be fixed sooner rather than later.

Yes, With the last two recruiting classes either two things will be determined in the next year/two (i doubt anyone gets fired after seeing how this recruiting class is going down). either we will know for certain that the coaches are not coaching players up to their talent (i really just dont think you can have that many misses in with the past class and the current one we are on) or we really did just lack talent/deapth in the back 7. I'd like to think that teaching a saftey to cover the top is not the most complicated thing but im not a football player so my thoughts are null and void. I can beleive the coaches are saying the problem is talent and deapth. i just dont see any changes occuring if the current staff all WANTS and TRIES to keep their job. also think of it this way: if Bryant does NOT get injured there is a very good chance we win that game.... stats being the worse or not its hard to fire a a position coach when you go undefeated for two years (sry spellin its early)

I still don't think Bryant would've made all that big of a difference. He wasn't a ball hawking S or the best in coverage. He would've been much better than Pitt Brown, but that's not saying much. I'm fine with keeping the current staff, as long as they can get the young guys to buy in and improve. With names at S alone of vonn bell, Ron tanner, Chris Worley, Jayme Thompson, tyvis Powell at just S, there just has to be someone to step up and claim spots. Too much talent not to be utilized, and I hope it doesn't mean putting them in soft zones for another year. CB should be even better next year even after losing Roby. But the guys will need to press more, and not have to use so much zone coverage, and our stellar pass rush can only help that. I'm glad the fire fickell talk has started to calm down, and let's hope we can win the orange bowl and end the season on a high note

That's what Withers has done everywhere he's gone.
I don't see it going away anytime soon. Bringing all the talent in the world is great, but the whole is less than the sum of the parts.
I think this officially puts me in the "it's Withers" camp. The defense needs to get straightened out sooner rather than later.

Given that Ron Tanner is likely our best tackler and a fairly good sized kid, anyone else think he might be a candidate to move to linebacker next season?

Man, we just moved darron lee and devan Bogard from S to LB. How many more? Lol. It's looking pretty brutal at LB depth, maybe booker and hubbard(and an eventually healthy) Berger can help

I'm considering sending this defensive coaching video to Coach Fick/Withers, & Coombs

http://www.championshipproductions....ll/4-3-Over-Cover-4-Defense-Set_FD-03922.html
I watched this interesting video and it was pretty impressive. Pat Narduzzi came from Y-town, went to school at Ursuline, played for his dad at YSU. After his father past away from cancer, he left to play for Rhode Island U. The ironic thing about this was that Jim Tressel became the next coach at YSU. I know that Mark Dantonio coached at YSU along with Tressel. As we all know Dantonio followed to Tressel to OSU and when Dantonio left there to become head coach at Cincinnati. Then he hired Narduzzi on his staff and they have been together ever since. Dantonio is a pretty saavy coach and he is going to be a fine head coach someday. I can see why MSU was the NO.1 defense this year. Just hope they can bring a win over Stanford.

We could see an immediate improvement iat the end of Spring ball. It's in part the Bowl practices and Spring practices that will help guys improve. And then we'll just be ridiculous on defense and offense!
