And then he won another NC with an underclassmen defensive backfield, a dominant LB in spikes amd another set of pass rushing DEs. Idk if it was all charlie strongs doing, though urban deserves a chunk of credit for that defense as well. Its hard for me to believe he can't duplicate that defensive success at OSU. Weve brought in a 2013 class of stud DBs, some very good pass rushers and DTs, but we're still looking for a significant LBer besides shazier. Maybe that guy could be johnson, Mitchell, or even booker or possibly McMillan. But it looks like pieves are in place, but the wrong schemes are used
Perry has come along on the run defense side of it, but he still needs work on coverage. I have noticed the last few games though, that he has been in on a decent amount of tackles in the run game. I would not give up on him yet. Physically, he has a better build then some of the other LBs. He just is a big LB like Pepper Johnson or the Big Katz.

I've come to like Perry. Hope he keeps improving during this break and again in the off season.
Doran had a nightmare game on Saturday with all those PIs, but I think he's another whose steadily improved.
While the defense as a whole hasn't improved, I think several players have individually improved over the year. But it always seems like the sum of the parts is less than the whole with this defense.

Obviously, this is the best defense that we've fielded in a very long time. I'm anxious to see our secondary put the clamps on Florida State. I expect a handful of INTs will seal their fate against our lockdown corners. Winston is in for a very long night. He sounded scared when the press asked him how he planned to handle the pressure of facing the #1 D in the nation. This game is going to be a dream come true since he's so pass happy.

Are you talking about auburns defense in a thread about tje issues with osu's defense?

Something I think isn't being taken into account is the overall attitude/philosophy of the HC. I don't believe for a second that Urban doesn't care about the D, but I also think he believes that as long as they're winning, it's not something that requires his full attention. He's an offensive mind. I think he feels defensive woes can be fixed/hidden/compensated for by scoring more.

I'd prefer to believe that Urban isn't any happier than most Buckeye fans are when it comes to the defense. Urban seems to be the kind of guy that doesn't hold any punches when he's talking about this team for the most part. I wonder if he was kind of walking a media tightrope as the streak continued. It's not like anyone in the media was going out of their way to say nice things about the Buckeyes, so why give them any ammunition?

As an outsider - I chose coaching.
I think Corch had a better support staff defensively at UF than he does now at OSU.
Charlie Strong was a better D-Cord than Fickle.

We really don't know that as fact because Fickel hasn't had the LBer depth or even talent in the secondary that was at Florida.
Look, everybody wants to see improvement but we are what we are right now. We lack play makers at LBer and talent in the secondary.

Idk if we lack talent in the secondary as much as we lack experience. At S alone we have a ton of natural talent in vonn bell, Ron tanner, Chris worley and possibly a move by tyvis Powell and cam burrows. Not to mention incoming guys like Malik hooker and most likely erick smith. guys just need more reps

At CB we return Doran grant, but also have the talents of Gareon conley, Eli Apple, cam burrows(so damn versatile and talented), armani reeves(i havent given up on him quite yet, he was thrown into some tough spots early and should grow up from those breaks), Damon Webb and possibly marshon lattimore. Again, they just need reps, a lot of talent, and each one of these guys has dominated when younger, but need to get some reps and coaching up. Coombs has his work cut out for him, but he has a lot of talent to work with.
Now LB is a different beast, we got some work to do there...

Secondary is loaded with talent; even if we don't include all the Redshirts.
LB is thin as hell though. Berger as a walk-on is in the 2-deep. And I find myself praying that we'll have Shazier, Grant, and Perry at 100% b/c I shudder to think what will happen if any of the 2nd string guys play at this point. I'm praying an Antonio Smith or one of the current Redshirts flips the switch over the break for next year b/c losing Shazier will hurt this unit bad.

I think this was a very accurate summation of what happened and the end results. Me personally, the whole season after the first 3 games, I was living in denial, hoping we could fix the problems of our corners and safeties but it just didn't seem to happen. Hell, even Urban admitted to the fact that It was going to take a couple of years to build and strengthen the Linebacker corp when he took over in 2011.

We've had a great 2 seasons for sure. And give credit to MSU, and what they have accomplished. Since 1988, they are finally going to the Rose Bowl. We have Clemson to look forward to in the Orange Bowl. Maybe we will have some players step up to the plate and play an outstanding game for the defensive side of the ball. "Go Bucks"
