Today I was listening to yesterday's podcast of The Herd. Colin makes a few good points after many OSU callers phoned in, and I am inclined to agree.
1. ACC is about equal to the Big Ten, and if we had beaten Wisconsin by as much as FSU had beaten Clemson then we should get the nod over FSU. The difference is they played a similar schedule and they killed the 1 team they played, an we barely beat the 1 good team we played. Though I contest that Wisky would kill Clemson.
2. Second, our defense is young and is merely OK. FSU has looked better against about the same competition. They have had 4-5 really great recruiting classes and are reaping the rewards. We have had 2.5 really great recruiting classes and still need about 1 more to really be great. Next year is our year, provided we have a quarterback. Our defense will be RIDICULOUS next year.
3. Whether or not we deserve to play in the national title, we need to look good, as a conference. I would rather go crush Oregon in a favorable matchup and have the argument that we deserved a national title than get crushed by Bama in a national title. FSU is going to get killed by Bama. I would rather have us kill Oregon in a Rose Bowl and have Wisky and MSU play SEC teams and have a chance, than have us go to a title game, Wisky go to the Rose Bowl and everyone else essentially have to step up in the bowl games. Big Ten sending 2 teams to the BCS more than everyone else has killed our reputation. I would rather have the big ten win 5-6 bowl games than send 2 teams to the BCS and only win 2 bowls again. So in other words, let Bama kill FSU and then our #1 can beat the PAC12 #1, and our #2, 3, 4 can beat the SEC #3, 4, 5. And our #5 beat can beat someone in the Big 12. We need to earn our respect back. Winning the title game would do that also and I have faith in Urban, but Saban is just as good of a coach given time to prepare. I'm an odds man and I will take the big ten earning back our pride if we don't send 2 teams to the BCS. Sending 2 to the BCS and we may win, but everyone else will likely lose.

First problem - you were listening to Colin the Coward.

Second problem - you think anything he says is a "good point"....

1. No, it's not. There's not two D's combined in the ACC that are as good as Sparty's is. Iowa isn't getting enough credit either, imo.

2. Agree on the first part. Next year, tOSU replaces almost the entire OL, the best receiver, and possibly Braxton. Not to mention Hyde or KG. I don't think the D is great, but I don't think FSU is all that much better.

3. Bullshit. You don't get many opportunities to play for all the marbles. I'd much rather play in an NC than any other Bowl. Also, there isn't a team out there that is capable of crushing tOSU this year. Bama is way overrated. Their D is average and their offense hasn't played a serious D. Miss St held them to 20 points. Nothing about them is scary. What tOSU needs is to win big against big time opponent. If tOSU would crudh Bama in the NC, it would change the perception of the B1G more than every B1G team winning their bowl by 3.

True, you don't get a lot of chances, and we could win a national title. But I would bet that if 2 Big Ten teams go to the BCS, no more than 2 of us will win out of 7-8 bowls. Even if we win, it will still kill the perception of the BCS.

Free Shoes plays in a HORRIBLE ACC. They will get killed by Bama.

WHAT PERCEPTION?!

The SEC is ridiculously overrated and even still Bama beat a Miss St team with a losing record by 13. Bama won't kill anyone in a Bowl.

WHAT PERCEPTION?!

The SEC is ridiculously overrated and even still Bama beat a Miss St team with a losing record by 13. Bama won't kill anyone in a Bowl.

First, the Miss St win by 13 I can attribute to the hangover after LSU, much like our Northwestern hangover after Wisconsin. You can't just a team by their worst performance, much like you can't judge them by the best, it's an average.

Second, I think the 3rd or 4th best team in the SEC would be FSU, therefore I would assume Bama would kill FSU like they killed Notre Dame. Much like I think the 2 best teams in the Big 12, 3-4 best in the Pac-12 and the best 2 teams in the Big Ten would beat FSU. I feel, no matter what BCS game they go into FSU will get beat, even Northern Illinois would be a bigger test than 12 of their games this year. The ACC is REALLY bad, definitely the worst of the major conferences. The Big Ten, I think, is a little better. I feel we would beat FSU handily. But the perception is the Big Ten is as bad as the ACC, and they beat their crappy conference more handily than we beat ours. That's why we lost. Urban was thinking win and we're good, FSU knew they had to do it with style points from the start, so they did. We probably could, but we didn't because we didn't think we had to.

Lastly, The only way to kill the perception that the Big Ten sucks is to win bowl games and win OOC games. Well, we failed on the OOC games, so it's down to the bowl games. And guess what, WE HAVEN'T DONE THAT IN THE LAST 3 YEARS! So only sending 1 BCS team allows us better match ups and a better shot at winning. I've been saying the Big Ten is underrated and the SEC is overrated for years. But it is getting hard to argue when they win their bowl games and we lose ours. Talking about home field advantage makes us sound like a bunch of whiners. Last year I put my real money on Notre Dame because I thought Bama was overrated, and I lost big. So how about we win the bowl games and stop sucking. Maybe beat the SEC in the 3 matchups we have.

And again, lastly. I want a crystal ball in Columbus. I really do. But I also want to stop hearing how the Big Ten sucks. I have a lot of pride in our conference, and it has gotten raked over the coals lately.

'Bama is legit.
After that it's questionable.
Particularly... TAMU, SC, LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia ... all ridiculously over-rated.
I think FSU would place above all those teams; despite playing in a really weak conference.

I'm also quite certain the perception being pushed is that the Big is worse than the ACC (and Leftover10 for that matter); whereas I rate both those conferences a step below the Big.
I see a sizable divide between PAC + SEC and us ... but I still look at those conferences and see teams that are a lot worse than the Big.

I don't see the "conference strength" as being germane to Ohio State except relative to other people's perspectives.

I honestly think the best two teams in the US are Florida State and Ohio State. Bama is very good, but not up to the past couple of years. If we could play the Tide in this season's NC game, I think we'd likely win.

tOSU didn't have a hangover so much against NW as NW didn't play another game after tOSU at full strength. To put it another way, if NW was able to duck tOSU like they have every other year in which they had a pulse, and were able to stay healthy, they might have one or two losses right now.

The perception of the B1G hasn't changed much since 2008, bowls be damned. If tOSU were to beat Bama 41-14 this year, every team that played with a pulse against them this year would find themselves ranked much higher to start next year.

Imo, it really started after 2006. Not even espn questioned if TSUN and tOSU were really the top two teams in the country prior to the Bowls that year. What gets me fired up is that I firmly believe that both tOSU and TSUN were suffering from massive hangovers. They both had played in the biggest big game in either school's history. I digress.

Anyway, I don't really agree with much of what you're saying, other than the ACC is a joke. What's really stupid is that poll voters seem to agree. There are 4 B1G teams in th top 25, while the ACC h hs three, yet somehow FSU is clearly better. Their logic is flawed and there's no chance they'll admit it.

Look, I've paid very close attention to Bama for the last few years, to the point of attending a game at Bryant-Denny. I not only agree with what BUCKYLE is saying, but I find it hard to believe that anyone could disagree if they've been watching. Alabama had a couple of years with flat-out amazing teams. That said, they are nowhere NEAR those teams this year. The lines aren't dominating, Yeldon is nothing compared to Ingram/Richardson, lacking playmakers, etc. I watched Bama slaughter and punish teams last year. This is not that same team, trust me. I honestly believe that FSU could blow the doors off of them if they keep a level head and don't get caught up in the hype. I think the Bucks could do the same. If the game against LSU lead you to believe otherwise, it's because they aren't as good this year either.
