What kind of car do you drive?

Sparc, do you put winter wheels and tires on your S4? I bought a 2012 S5 in August. I am wondering which tires to get. I refuse to pay the dealer qoutes/packages. I have read it's best to buy wheel and tires from tirerack. I just don't know which tire to choose.

Thanks.

I drive a 2dr TJ Jeep Wrangler currently. Selling that in the next few months and upgrading to the 4dr JK Wrangler. Gotta love the 30mile drive to work in the 19(at best) mpg Jeep

Tirerack.com is your friend for tire/wheel packages.

Yeah, they definitely seem to be the best deal out there.

I am looking at putting Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 245/40 on 18x8 wheels. Everyone says it is best to just have designated winter wheels and tires together. Also that 18 would give better performance than the 19s I currently have. My whole dilemma is that I would rather make my current OEM wheels, which are 19s my designated winter set and then purchase new wheels in the Spring. However the tires in 19 will run me 1200+ for the set and then to have them mount/balance on current rims would put me almost at the cost of just buying all new 18s w/wheels.

Ahh, I have no clue what to do.

Funny you ask... I'm pricing new wheels and tires for winter right now...

Yeah, the dealer packages are a bit over the top. But you know... you did buy a high performance Audi so you've got to be prepared to get raked now and again

So, yeah, definately getting a set of winter kicks. I'll let you know what I turn up. I'm looking for some rims that will hid break dust a lot more than what I've got. I swear I give my son $10 every two weeks to clean the break dust on those wheels during the spring and summer... The S4 kicks off a LOT of dust as I'm sure your S5 does as well.

Did you get the Cab or the coupe? I don't understand why they don't keep the 4.2 NA V8 as an option in the Cab... I would have dropped the coin on the S5 had they had the V8 in the Cab... but alas... It was find a '09 with good miles or hold off and hope that they release a RS4/5 cab that I like. Drove a few RS4s when I was looking for my car and those things go from zero to holy shit in about two seconds. Were it not for having to strip down the engine every year to deal with the carbon I'd prolly have gone for it but who wants to deal with that.

Are you considering any mods? I'm not into a lot of cosmetic modifications myself. It's mostly about what's under the hood for me. There's a couple of JHM mods that I'm reading about now... piggies and drop the cats among other things... But then I'll have to pass emissions inspection out here in Chicagoland and it'd be all over for me.

Post a pic! Love to see your ride!

There are a lot of aftermarket shops out there that sell nice wheels or wheels and tire packages, especially for German cars. I have bought from most of these at one point or another with good success.

elementwheels.com
modbargains.com

I bought a set of these Avant Gardes for my 335i in 19"s and I love them.

I picked up the coupe, I love the way the V8 sounds. I have just begun to look at doing some modifications--like you mainly to the engine. I was looking at APR Tuning. Would love to get the car over 500 horsepower, and they can do it. (http://www.goapr.com/products/stage3_b8_s5_42fsi.html)

Not sure how the wife would feel about that one though.

In regards to the carbon build-up from FSI engines. Have you had any experience with this yet? Its all new to me. I did have a 2008 A4, that I traded in when I bought the S5. I had about 30k on that car and was unaware of any problems due to carbon.

Now that's what I'm talk'n 'bout. I have a lot of reading to do before I decide to do some of these mods. You ever check out audizine.com? Lots of good help over there. Many who have been there done that and willing to share their experiences.

Edit... Thanks Taos for the tirerack suggestion... Here's a few that I'm considering.

Additional updates to follow... links not working.

On a side note ... we used to have a couple of Land Rover Defenders. If you are looking for a utilitarian SUV, that it the car to own. Very difficult to find one, however, which is why I went with the G-wagon.

LJB--why are the defenders so difficult to find? Is it simply an issue of limited production?

Those '?'s don't get break dust tho...

Ok... Details man! Details! I have some time on Thurs night to do some shopping. I've found a couple of 18 inch wheels that will hide break dust and Chicago winter dirt pretty well. I think I can get it all done for around $2 grand.

Been posting from my phone lately... I'll get around to the pix soon.

My first car purchase was a '95 Mitsubishi 3000GT. Ever since then, I've purchased strictly Hyundais (past: Sonata, Santa Fe presently: Elantra and Accent). Don't have the money to splurge. If I did, then I'd be all over the Audi R8.

2009 Honda Civic. Dependable.

What I want to add to the stable is a vintage mustang fastback or a vintage Camaro.

Mid to late 60's to restore.

Candy Apple Red.

If not my first car, 1960 Chevy Impala convertible. Pearl White.
