What film had the greatest soundtrack?

American *Tail

Nice pull, though now you've brought up his anthology of A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, Avatar, Troy, Glory (already mentioned Braveheart).

Celine Dion almost single handedly ruined Titanic (put Whitney on that track)

A Beautiful Mind is another of my favorites, both for score and movie. The scenes where he's putting together patterns and sequences are brilliantly scored. Avatar is a great soundtrack stuck on a bad to mediocre spectacle of a film. At least one of his last pieces of music is beautifully paired with a visually impressive attraction film and I can hear it when I go to Animal Kingdom and ride Avatar: Flight of Passage.

EDIT: Speaking of which, man, I love Goldsmith's score for the original Soarin' attraction as well. Still listen to it all the time when I want to take a moment and fade into a happy feeling. His work for smaller pieces like that and the Universal Fanfare is just outstanding. Compared to Williams' work on similar, smaller pieces it shows surprising strength. But that's getting a bit off topic and starts wandering into the realm of things like short films where other composers really show through (like Michael Giacchino).

Forrest Gump is disqualified for being essentially just a feel-good KTEL greatest hits collection rather than any kind of true soundtrack.

The answer for which all of you are searching is Superfly.

Yeah, if we're talking about movies where the soundtrack was conceived that way (for the film) its hard to beat. I may need to dust off some curtis mayfield and be embarrassed it ever got dusty

I would agree with Purple Rain,

Spinal Tap?

The Big Lebowski (Although I do fuckin' hate the Eagles..... man)

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Good call on the TBL. Cohen Brothers seamlessly mixed in some esoteric shit into that. I never thought I'd hear Esquivel and Yma Sumac in the same movie as Creedence and Kennie Rogers with it all working perfectly. Somebody has a playlist on Spotify of every song used in The Big Lebowski, but I think they're somewhat out of order.
