I played in the 70s so it’s been awhile. I recall we were taught see what you hit and shoulder to upper legs and wrap.My helmet was plastic with pads by the ears and elastic straps on top of the head, basically just for fitting purposes. It didn't take much to get your bell rung.
I damn sure wasn't lowering my head to hit with that thing. The only person I was going to hurt was me.

I played in the 90s was taught see what you hit, facemask not crown and head across the bow.
We got the slap to the ear hole…I'm from the same era. Our coaches were adamant about seeing what you hit. Lowering your head to brace for a hit got you a lap, or two.
