Week 5 Games Discussion

Just a reminder that Desmond Howard picked them to go to the playoff.

That A&M-Pitt semifinal is gonna be lit. Baylor lost again today, too.

Pretty sure you're just arguing for the sake of arguing now. If the rule prevents one guy from getting carted off like Banks tonight, it's worth it.

Dudes who can only tackle by launching helmet first into a runner probably shouldn't be playing football in the first place. Find another sport.
No, not really arguing. But, when you see the interpretation of the rule being just that an interpretation then it’s not going to change. It’s like roughing the passer. Sometimes it just depends on who the passer is.

The downside of today's protective helmet. No one was doing that wearing leather, or the plastic bowl with a bit of foam rubber that I wore in the day.

I played in the era where we had a plastic shell and rigged rubber packs that resembled the BBQ dipping sauce packets from a fast food restaurant (the era just before inflatable custom fitting helmets). The choice was basically between wearing a helmet that would come off every three plays or a helmet that gave you a migraine by halftime. Fuck that sucked.

I had better hat size options buying New Era fitted wool ball caps at Lids.

Yes, subjectivity comes into play which is why I'm glad they review each targeting because sometimes they blow it. But there has to be something to get players' attention.

Personally, I'd prefer targeting to just be 15 yards if you do it once - like a yellow card in soccer. Do it again and then you get ejected. But getting rid of the rule is just going to lead to more head injuries. There has to be some attempt to protect players from themselves.

My helmet was plastic with pads by the ears and elastic straps on top of the head, basically just for fitting purposes. It didn't take much to get your bell rung.

I damn sure wasn't lowering my head to hit with that thing. The only person I was going to hurt was me.

Fundamentals left the building decades ago in basketball. It seems football has become as much about the spectacular play as any sport
I honestly think it's a consequence of the practice rules. They keep mandating less practice and less physical practice. That probably has the biggest effect on fundamentals cause if you don't have them you don't get taught them unless the whole team couldn't tackle and they take out time for gameplan practice to work on it

I’m with you. It seems like normally it doesn’t get called unless the person getting hit is laid out. I didn’t see the Banks replay, so I don’t know if that was called.

I remember those. They were our JV hand-me-down practice shells, because I went to a really small, private Catholic school that only wore the fancy new helmets for actual games.

I was a JV SE and pretty sure I gave my classmate, a starting CB, brain damage on a crack back block on a screen pass. Proudest practice moment of my life, until I realized he’d miss two games and a whole week of school.
