Vince Young (unemployed)

IMO this hurts him big... he will be grilled... teams will be very fearful if they aren't sure whether immensely complicated defenses won't dismantle him...

Here's one of the very few times you and I don't agree 100%. While it'll raise a flag or two, along with a few eyebrows, I don't think it'll drop him more than a pot or two, if at all. True, the NFL defenses are more complicated, but I think there's a difference between deciphering "there's only one right answer" questions in a controlled, sterile environment, and instinctively reading and reacting dynamically in real time. Just as a great running back will near-instantaneously read a hole and cut at the best angle without "thinking", Young has displayed that type of read-and-react ability which is even further enhanced by his great physical gifts.

His agent should be fired for not better preparing him...

Ahhh, back to normal...we agree again.

Mack Brown has strongly defended VY. While not surprising, since it's the right thing to do as far as how current Longhorns and potential future Longhorns will view him, it's still commendable.

Longhorns' Brown defends QB Young

Brown spoke out in response to the NFL combine rumor that Young had posted a woefully low 6 on the NFL's Wonderlic test, which is an aptitude test meant to measure a draft prospect's ability to learn.

"I told Vince before he left, 'Understand you'll be treated more poorly in the next month or two than you've ever been treated because you're so high-profile,'" Brown told the Houston Chronicle.

Brown also said he knows that reports of Young's poor test showing were incorrect.

"I know for a fact he did not make 6 on the test because I was told specifically, and I was also told the test was graded wrong the first time," Brown told the Chronicle. "So anyone that's reporting he did that poorly is wrong."

The veteran coach also wants others to know that Young is not lacking as far as smarts are concerned.

"Vince is very bright," the coach said. "I hate that people had to take a shot like that that's unfair and untrue. Also, I probably couldn't pass that test myself if I tried. I've read it, and it seems really stupid to me."
Any more doubts?

Brown also said the critics should just remember how Young fared as the Longhorns' quarterback this past season.
"The other thing I would say about Vince Young is he just had the highest passing efficiency of any quarterback in the country," Brown said. "We're very complicated with what we do offensively, and he's won 30 and lost two. He would have graduated next fall."

Assuming his score is a 16, I'd be pulling the race card if I was him. McNabb, Culpepper, Marino, Favre all scored a 16 or lower I believe. While his 16 should be frowned upon, I think it is getting blown up far too much. I'm curious if it would be as big of an issue if the false reports of 6 didn't come out first. 16 is by no means good, but its nothing worth the scrutiny he is receiving.

Favre got a 22: on the informal (since the NFL doesn't confirm scores) lists I've seen, there were no Super Bowl-winning QBs who scored below a 20.

Bradshaw reportedly scored a 15 - yet won Super Bowls with Pittsburgh.

LINK

Not that, say, Wikipedia is a perfect source of information, but that linked quote sounds like more like hearsay than real evidence--and Marino got a 16, not the 15 the anonymous "longtime scout" said. Regardless, since the 1980s there's at least a correlation between higher Wonderlic scores and Super Bowl rings.

The explanation just doesn't add up. If it was graded wrong the first time, why not just regrade it? Why the need to administer a second test?

"Vince is very bright," the coach said.

Someone who is "very bright" doesn't score a 16 on the Wonderlic on their retake. Young's is probably nowhere near as dumb as folks have tried to make him out to be, but he's no Einstein, either.

That being said, I still think he can be very successful in the NFL despite the low score.

If I were considering drafting him I would care more about sitting him down with one of those "sports psychologists" than his wonderlic score. I'm not sure I used the right title, but I am referring to the experts teams have been using to analyze the personalities of potential draft picks to try and predict their future success. I know the Colts used one highly rated one when considering Manning or Leaf. He told them Manning. Good call.
