Young's Wonderlic score?

Texans GM disputes reports of Longhorns QB's low total

<!--ARTICLE BODY TEXT-->INDIANAPOLIS - Texans general manager Charley Casserly disputed reports Vince Young got a poor score on the Wonderlic test.

Young reportedly got a six on the 50 question test, which grades intelligence and speed of thought. If that were the case, the Texas quarterback would have gotten one of the worst scores in history.

"Yes I've been told that's inaccurate by a source good enough for me to stand up here to quote it," Casserly said. "Otherwise, I wouldn't get up here and say it."

An NFL spokesman said scores don't come out until a week after the combine. Casserly might have been defending his future quarterback. The Texans have the first pick in the April draft, and he named three players as standing above the rest: Young, USC quarterback Matt Leinart and USC running back Reggie Bush. Casserly left multiple possibilities open, including trading the pick to improve his 2-14 team.

The Tennessee Titans have the third overall pick and are looking at quarterbacks with Steve McNair nearing retirement. Coach Jeff Fisher put Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler in the mix with Leinart and Young.

Leinart and Young didn't work out at the combine, but Cutler felt he needed to in order to make a push.

"There's a little attention and stress, but we're here to do our testing and we've just got to go out and do it," Cutler said. "I'm just thankful to be here right now."

If the score of 6 was not true (and never believed to be true, such as if a mistake were made by using the wrong answer key), and VY drops below the 3 spot in the draft, a lawsuit against whomever first reported the score wouldn't surprise me, due to the lost money.

Although as I understand it, journalists won't be found guilty if there is 'absence of malice'. In such a lawsuit, only the lawyers billing huge hourly rates would win.

I believe that wonderlic test scores are meaningful for QB's, who need to be able to process information quickly.

I really hope the '6' thing was an actual mistake in grading the test, and that VY still gets taken in the top 3.

I would think that if any teams starting having doubts about the value of Vince Young as a potential NFL QB, then all they'd have to do is watch the first and fourth quarters of the game against us and the entire national championship game.

IMO this hurts him big... he will be grilled... teams will be very fearful if they aren't sure whether immensely complicated defenses won't dismantle him...

I'm not convinced Cutler doesn't go before... we'll continue to hear more about this test and the results... up to and beyond draft day...

His agent should be fired for not better preparing him...

Assuming his score is a 16, I'd be pulling the race card if I was him. McNabb, Culpepper, Marino, Favre all scored a 16 or lower I believe. While his 16 should be frowned upon, I think it is getting blown up far too much. I'm curious if it would be as big of an issue if the false reports of 6 didn't come out first. 16 is by no means good, but its nothing worth the scrutiny he is receiving.
