Vince Young (unemployed)

Obviously I'm not upset he's leaving. But it's a little disappointing to see everyone thinking we'd definitely get beat by them next September. Even with our young defense we're still better than USC's defense. Vince Young did not beat us this year..we beat ourselves. This is Ohio State. No matter how much talent we have leaving we'll always reload...especially at linebacker which will be our major loss. In 2002 we were ranked 3rd in rushing defense.

After we won the national championship we lost Cie Grant, Matt Wilhelm, Mike Doss, Kenny Peterson, and Donnie Nickey. Even with all that we were ranked 2nd the following year.

Have a little faith.

I'd say our 06 defense is going to be very comparable to the 05 USC D, tho I think we'll wrap up more often (whereas USC defenders often seemed to try and make the big hit.. which leads to whiffs).

If VY didn't beat OSU, then nobody has ever beaten OSU. Cooper beat himself, not Biakabatuka. Does their team get no credit for defense either?

I do not think VY has ever been slowed down while scrambling outside of Columbus, and even then I saw outstanding players like Schlegel, Whitner, Carp miss tackles on him... which is an incredible feat.

03 is not a good example, we still had a lot of talent including the unbelievably dominant Will Smith. 04 is a much closer match to what Heacock is enduring in terms of turnover on his defense. Fortunately we have a lot more O than we did in 04.

I can't recall an OSU defense losing nine defensive starters between seasons. It would very, very tough to handle Vince Young with our young defense so early in the season.

Knowing that next season wont be ideal defensively, I don't know that I agree with some of the "sky is falling" opinions of some posters.

We return Pitcock and Richardson
Lauranitis got a lot of late season PT
Mitchell, I don't think will be too much of a letdown.
D'Andrea, if he can stay healthy should be equal to Schlegal.
Then there is Jenkins and Freeman.

I haven't been paying enough attention to know who will be inserted in the dline (not that it matters as much with all the rotating) but I would assume it will be Penton.

I do not claim that this D will be anywhere in the same ball park as last years D, but if they can at least pull through the 1st 1/3 of the season they should be starting to gel and become more of what we as fans are accustomed to seeing.

Hey I'm not saying it wouldn't be a challenge recovering from our D losses. All I'm saying is I think everyone who says we don't have a chance if VY returns is pretty pessimistic given OSU's history of reloading talent almost immediately.

The '05 USC defense comparison is probable right on, except that we will be MUCH better by the end of the year than them. Early on an experienced QB like Young would do major damage. Not that I would think we would lose but if we win it would have been a 45-42 type score.

Now I would have loved to play VY next year because Texas would have been #1 and us somewhere in the top 5 rankings wise. Now Texas will fall in the rankings and makes one wonder where they would rank in the preseason. Now we might be preseason #1, which would scare me because of our young defense next year.

Before I forget I do wish VY the best in the NFL as I already see him better than Vick and whatever team gets him will love it.

those of you old school types who have been watching CFB for decades, who would you rank with/above Young in terms of great college QBs?

I hate the vick comparisons that you always hear on TV. He's a dual threat, but other than that Vick is a small burner, and Young is a monstrous guy who beats you with strength/moves more often than his speed.

Elway is the best comparison to past greats, imo. I think Young has the potential to exceed Elway, if, in fact, he can master nfl qb 'reads' with football smarts. Too early to tell. His physical abilities are singular to him. Great leadership and Heart. The last element would obviously be the quality of his O-line & WRs. In open space VY will dominate until he slows down or (hopefully not), gets injured.

Who knows what will happen to talent going up a level? Guess is: he'll do fine.

don't think there is anyone to compare him to. go old school enough, back "in the day" and QB's got in trouble for running! maybe Roger Staubach fits in here, but the game has just changed so much it's hard to say.

I know Vince fans get tired of it but I still don't think he's got much of a big throw arm. some of his longer throws the other night looked pretty bad. that doesn't mean it can't be fixed but that is definitely not the strongest part of his game. the offensive game plan they ran called for him to make short throws and run a lot. it worked perfectly (hello, Pete Carroll - you had a month to get ready for this...).

right now, from where I sit Vince looks like a one of a kind QB. he may be the biggest thing to hit the NFL. he also may be a big bust like Kordell Stewart. some of that will probably be determined by his coaches. can they figure out to use what he does?

best of all, Jim Tressel can quit worrying about it.
