Vince Young (unemployed)

3 Things I Learned Today From This Thread:

1. Even though it's 2005 and not 1965 (or even, say, 1985), black QBs can only be compared to other black QBs.
2. People still wrongly assume Mike Vick can throw. Face it folks, he can't. Unless it's a soft toss to Alge Crumpler in the flat, Vick can't hit the broadside of a barn.
3. People still wrongly assume Vince Young can't throw. Well, he can. He's proven it this season.

Throw out the damn stats, turn on the TV and just watch the two play: VY and MV are not comparable; two different players with two totally different styles.

... I think I'm going to go spread some rep to texasfight and HighLonesome for NOT posting in this thread. :wink2:

I am not sure if you watched the game on Thanksgiving, but he throws were not just five yard dump passes. The throw over the middle to Crumpler for about 30 yards was spot on.

I think it is just this preconcieved notion that blacks can't throw.

And the reason for comparing him to Vick is b/c there isn't another QB that can run like Vick and that is the kidn of talent Young has.

I don't think I am going to compare Young to Peyton Manning b/c they are totally different QB's.

It doesnt matter how a QB gets it done as long as they get it done. Can Young wins games in the NFL, I would have to say yes.

First off, I'm not at all fond of Vick's passing ability either. I've said that before. And his "I win games" excuse is starting to get old.
I expect him to start in the NFL, just not at QB. Compared to all of the other "elite" quarterbacks in the NCAA, he's below average as far as passing goes. And unless he greatly improves his accuracy and his ability to read coverages and defenses from now until whenever his combine/pro day is, I highly doubt any team will want him taking snaps for them.

<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
Sweed, Pittman, Charles, Selvin Young. But when did I ever compare him Leinart anyway?

When I hear someone label a quarterback a top 10 or top 5 draft prospect, I expect the player be a great passer, not just a decent one.

And the Falcons were far from a bad team when Vick "took" them to the playoffs.

I think you contradicted yourself here, you say compared to all the other elite qbs and then you say you are not comparing him to Lienhart, well I was under the impression that he was an elite QB.

You can honestly say you would take those guys over the guys that Lienhart has. That is why I said that Lienhart has more weapons to work with than Vince.

The Falcons were 4-12 before Vick got there, I wouldnt exactally call that good.

If I owned an NFL team, I would take Lienhart as the first QB...no doubt. I'd let him pick the defenses apart and let the running back run the ball. JMHO.

What if you are a weak team and have no line, kind of like the Texans. Lienhart will get destroyed and keep in mind he has had some knee problems and last year had elbow surgery.

That is kind of like an injury that kept Tim Couch out of so many games.

Why? Unless Nordgren is a senior I'd figure they would go with him as he is an effective pocket-passer. Their backfield is stacked as is with Charles and Melton.

A Vince-less '06 Texas squad would still be one hell of a tough opponent, but even if they have Young, I somehow get the feeling that our Bucks will play out of their minds in Austin, if not just for revenge. The scary thought is I see our offense keeping us in that game.

Longhorn fan here. You should hope he leaves, cause UT is dead in the water without VY. There is no other QB available for next year with any meangingful experience. One of the two McCoy's (it gets confusing) played briefly against Kansas. The long-term hope is a kid who switched his commitment from Florida, and he will play Spring ball, so he could play in the Fall, but you would have a rookie going against your D. Gotta like those odds. For that reason, Young will probably stay.

You think Young will stay b/c Texas will have no one to fill the void?

I'm not arguing about who is the better passer but I think many of you are using the NFL to assess Mike Vick's passing ability when the comparison here lies in their college careers...

Vick @ VT

Career: 177-313 20 TDs 11 Ints (only played 2 years)

RS Freshman: 90/152 1840 12/5 180.4 Efficiency Rating
RS Sophomore: 87/161 1234 8/6 (this was also the year Lee Suggs emerged)

Thoise are some pretty decent numbers for a 19 and 20 year old kid.

I know Vince has more yards passing this year than Vick had in his career, but I again think level of talent around the two is vastly different.

Both guys are solid players...all I am saying is the broad statements regarding the ability of either or that one is significantly better than the other is misguided in my opinion.

i guess thats why vick was selected to the pro bowl and for 5/6 of the first half he had a 100% completion percentage:biggrin:

I am not sure if you have memorized every single one of Vick's pass attempts this season, but maybe you could numerate what occured on the other end of about 200 of them? Yes, I understand Vick has actually completed a deep pass in his life, but of Vick's 150 odd completions this season, I'm guessing Crumpler has caught about 50 of them. The MNF throw over the middle to Jenkins against the Jets put Jenkins on the DL for a few weeks with a high ankle sprain that pass was so bad.

I agree with you on Vick, I back him all the time.

I am not sure that his passes where very errant in my opinion. He had a couple bad decisions but what QB doesnt. He has that knack as a winner as he put that ball to Sneed against us right where it had to be(I swear if I see that replay one more time this college football seaosn I am going to puke). He had some very nice throws against us and we all know how well he can run.

very true BUT his mistakes against the team we have right now would have not only gave a us victory but we might have very well put them away with ease and we wouldnt even be talking about vince young anymore but unfortunately we willo have to wait till we go to austin next year. i just dont see him playing any quality teams which inflates his numbers. the 2 times he played QUALITY teams(OU in 04 and us) he didnt look near as impressive and just looked an everyday QB and he looked disasterous against OU last year and should of lost the game for texas this year. thats just the way i see things. the big 12 really needs to beef up.

Wow. Definitely better? Vick did not have a fraction of the offensive weapons VY utilizes and still made it to the NC game. He was the offense on that team and any form of running game was available due to his effect on the defense. More durable? I don't remember Vick ever being injured in college and the level of contact in the pros is not comparable to college...Jim Brown got up slowly after every run in his career. It was a purpsoseful tactic to cover his fatigue at any point...but I would definitely call him durable.

Suggs' five TDs pace Hokies in win over UCF
Suggs rushed for a BIG EAST Conference-best 1,207 yards and led the nation in touchdowns with 28.

Andre' Davis was pretty good too at WR. He scored on a run, pass and return vs. WVU in 2000 amassing 271 ap yards.

I'm not claiming that he had as many weapons, but he wasn't without any talent.
------------------------------

Yes grad, I do think he is definitely better than Vick in passing. Both have their bad games, but its not nearly as unusual for Young to have a full series where his passes are on the money.
