Vince Young (unemployed)

Absolutely right. My point is though that Leinart would have gone number one overall last season.

I'm not sure that's going to happen this season, but it could depending on who's got that pick. I can't see any team passing on Bush, though.

and by the same token, if utah doesnt make a bcs bowl, does anyone even know who alex smith is, let alone make him the #1 pick?

a team's record does wonders for a player's draft stock. if you don't think that will be considered by young or anyone else, you're fooling yourself.

he will probably go thru the combines like Hawk and Carp did last year, and then maybe see where he would go, and then really decide. If he can beat out Bush for the Heisman, will it make it easier for him to go pro, or will he try to ome back to win it again?
All I know is, if he comes back, we had better put 40 on them down there if we want to win.

High Lonesome: "Still i actually agree with both you and mili, if the money is there this year he should take it. You go to college to get a job, if his market value reaches its peak this year then go for it"

Agreed. Leinhart is a unique case. USC is the toast of Los Angeles right now. Could you imagine being 21 years old and the king of LA?

I mean, come on: booty calls with Lindsay Lohan, partying like a rock star, playing like an All-Star, and f***ing like a porn star with the hottest chicks you could imagine .. you just can't put a price on that.

Even if he loses $10 million by falling in the Draft, it'd be well worth it.

The one thing that makes me think that Vince's situation is somewhat like Leinart's is that Vince sure seems like he is enjoying the hell out of playing college football, and everybody in the state of Texas has good things to say about him, etc....He might just have different tastes and goals than the strictly ballroom

So while he may not be the king of LA, he is the king where he is at, and that is not a bad thing. Ricky saw the joy of being the king of Austin, and that was enough for him.

Also, in response to another post about the insurance policy, the "premiums" on those policies can be structured as back loaded, and smaller amounts where loans cover the up front cost. For the insurance company, having the premium paid up front is somewhat meaningless, minus the present value aspect, because the policy's term is short, so as soon as he signs his contract they get their full payment out of the signing bonus, or the bank lending the premium gets paid. Very little risk on those policies. Even if he gets hurt next year, Rosenhaus can sign him, and point to McGahee to get him drafted.

looks like we have our work cut out for us next year.

Doesn't Texas lose like nearly their entire OL? If our DL stays as strong as it is now (we only lose Green and Kudla), I think we can put enough pressure on Young to allow our LBs (albeit not as good as this year's corps) to keep him somewhat in check. If D'Andrea, Kerr, and Freeman are healthy, along with Laurinaitis, Hoobler, Robinson, Terry, Spitler, and Homan, I think they'll be ahead to hold ground well enough.

Both teams lose a lot... but his return will make a victory much tougher. I like our potential at LB, but until they prove it on the field for an entire game, we won't know what we have.

Who do we lose that can't be replaced by someone nearly as good, if not as good, as them, aside from our LBs?

Defense (other than LBs):
Kudla (probably replaced by Gholston)
Green (replaced by Patterson)
Salley (replaced by Mitchell)
Everett (already replaced by Jenkins)

We lose little by graduation at those positions (no offense to the seniors, but rather props to their replacements)

Offense:
Mangold (most likely replaced by Cordle)
Sims (no definite replacement)
Holmes (not a senior, but he's good as gone...most likely replaced by Hall or Dukes)

The offense should be solid next year. With Smith's return after his great improvement this season, an OL that should be as good or better with the return of Cordle and the addition of Connor Smith, and our WR corps all but intact, we should be able to put up more quite a bit more than 22 points on Texas next year.

There's no way to expect no dropoff from Holmes, Mangold, and Kudla. I feel pretty comfortable about the others, but those three (as well as the LBs) will be missed more than we realize.

I'm still making the trip. I've booked my hotel in Austin.
I would too if I could afford it... it sounds like an awesome place to hand out some payback

Our defense will take a big step back. That doesn't mean they can't be a good defense, but you have to drink some serious koolaid to think we won't notice a difference.

Kudla is very underrated due to the fact that he followed the greatest DE in OSU history, Smith. Between him and carpenter, we will not have that kind of pressure from the edge. We may find some very good alternatives, but we cannot match their experience and sheer athleticism.

Our LBs will take a huge step back, regardless of how good the new guys are. I am high on Hoobler and Freeman, but you can't replace two first round picks and a very solid third LB named Schlegel.

At CB, Jenkins will replace Everett nicely. We should be ok in nickel formations, or with injuries, but we can't be sure that we have a rock-solid nickel-back like we have been blessed with in recent years. I think we will, but we have to wait and see if our depth will match this year's.

At safety, Mitchell will fill in for Salley nicely, but we will lose his leadership, experience and direction (lining up everyone correctly). Not a big dropoff, but still a slight change.

On paper, we should be ok on D, but we will have to see how all of these new, somewhat untested faces do as a unit for an entire season. This is not to suggest we can't win against texas or that we won't do well next year, I'm just talking about the dropoff at D (I think our O will carry us occasionally, at least moreso than in years past).

And at WR, you simply cannot replace Holmes. Our O should be fine, but Hall/Dukes will not compensate for the best WR in 2005.

Well, fuck it then. Might as well call up Texas and say, "You know what, we don't want to get embarrassed on national TV, seeing as we're losing our three starting LBs and thus we can't posibly hold InVinceable to under 70 points. Congratualtions on your forfeit victory." :roll1:

People, don't be stupid. Reread what I said. Did I say we won't feel the loss of the LBs? Of course we will. But don't go shivering in your shorts worrying that Vince Young is going to run wild all over our defense solely because Hawk, Carpenter, and Schlegel will be gone. The key won't be our LBs but rather our DL. If our DL gets the same amount of pressure, or better, than they did back on Sept 10th, then Kerr, D'Andrea, and Freeman will be good enough to maintain decent containment.

And as much as I like Will Smith, to say he's the best defensive end in Ohio State history is a stretch. Ever hear of Bob Brudzinski?
