Verizon & Android news

Just got Nexus'd. Amazing phone.

The OS is as good as advertised, the screen is peerless & the hardware is pleasing to hold (some complained it felt cheap, disagree).

My one gripe is the phone is a bit too slippery. They added to the already slim profile by angling off the top and bottom portions of the sides, which makes the smooth plastic hard to hold. Nothing that a case can't fix, but it's my only complaint so far.

Haven't had it long enough to test the battery, but I knew going in it was going to be mediocre. Half off extended batteries @ verizon are a must buy.

Samsung Galaxy Tabs are $50 off right now. Actually found out while buying one, the sales rep didn't even know. My wife was so frustrated with her Thunderbolt that we dropped it in favor of going back to a texting phone and the Tab. Phone bill stayed the same. Of course 4G is down so we can't activate it yet.

Planning on requesting a replacement for the Thunderbolt since it is still under warranty (my wife's parents couldn't call her on it for some reason... even tried updating the sim card). I'll be putting it on Ebay when it arrives. I suppose I could swap out my Droid X for it, but I know the X works fine.

I'm now about 3 weeks into using the Lenovo ThinkPad tablet. Great piece of hardware. This will be a great tool to take into the field - filling out pdf forms using the supplied stylus, taking photos, recording voice notes. The Droid Charge was good for some of these tasks, but filling forms was not in the cards.

Oh, by the way - it makes a great Kindle, too. I'm getting a real charge out of downloading library books onto the tablet in Kindle format.

Just ran a speedtest at a Delaware OH gas station...

28.7 Mbps down, 10.8 Mbps up :yow1:

Got my Nexus for Christmas. My high is 12 Mbps from my couch. Pretty awesome phone.

Anyone have any particular free apps that are good for ICS? I am still deciding between Handcent and the standard texing apps.

Handcent is the standard answer. I find it to be better, though I avoid regular texts to save money. (Google Voice)

The amazon app store is a must, as they add one app per day for free. Unfortunately many of the best apps were already offered, but they occasionally have good ones now.

Verizon will start charging $2 to make a payment online starting January 15,2012

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/tec...ee-for-online-payments-sparks-a-backlash.html

Verizon Wireless' new $2 "payment convenience fee" for online credit and debit payments is sparking a consumer backlash and a some scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission.

Since the fee was announced Thursday, customers of the nation's largest wireless carrier have complained about the charge on Twitter, in Facebook groups and pages and Google+ too. The $2 charge is set to go into effect starting Jan. 15 for Verizon users not enrolled in automatic bill pay options who pay their bills online with a credit or debit card.

Good idea. You can keep your stranglehold on customers, don't [censored] them over while doing so. Just my 2 cents.

for now... they'll find some other way to get their money... put it in the USF or charge more for something else...

Sounds about right. I mean it's 2 dollars. Couldn't they find a way to hide it without warning the customers "hey, were going to be assholes and charge you money to pay your bill" Makes perfect sense.

They'll create an LTE maintenance fee... you know .. for the network that keeps crashing :-P ... there as always growing pains with new networks... given Verizon's reputation I'm really shocked that they were the first to deploy LTE in mass...

Verizon set its bar too low. When I owned a commercial building, AEP wanted to charge me $5 per meter, per month, to pay by phone or by credit card or by internet or by autopay. I had 5 meters. I said "[censored] you, you greedy pack of stupid bastards."

The best thing about bankrupting the RE business and losing that building is being able to pay AEP only for my home meter. Oh by the way - they [censored]ed up the "consumer choice" part of that, too. Said they'd be charging me $0.063 per kWh till February, then charged me over 9 cents per when the bill arrived. [censored] you, AEP. (I used to call them Albanian Electric Power until they got below 10 power outages a year here.)
