I see one really big one: No Bike Hart to bail them out.

Mike also spoiled us in terms of ball protection (aside from the Florida game) and pass protection. Two fumbles and a bunch of missed assignments I'm sure (I was working/watching the game so I didn't catch everything, thank God.) That's definitely something I'm not used to seeing.

Yep the McHoppy fumble is forgiveable with him being a true frosh, but Minor seems to have real problems protecting the ball.

Where were Minor and Brown?

Running McGuffie up the middle was a pretty foolish plan, yet he kept doing it.

Agreed.

It's nothing new for McGuffie, though his injury was the excuse before. Really it's pretty typical for true frosh to struggle in this area, let alone when starting two of them.

I'm no expert on the insanity that is RR's offense, but that looked like Sheridan's fault. Hard to tell.

My favorite display of offensive ingenuity was throwing a 10 yard pass over the middle with :04 seconds left in the game with Utah expecting the hail mary(seeing how it was the last play of the game and scUM was trailing its hard to blame them).

Man that fooled em!

Didn't Carr and company get lambasted for doing something similar in another recent embarrassing loss in a Bowl game?

This wasn't an easy game for Michigan to warm up on, especially with a new coach, new offense in play. A lack of experienced offensive players didn't help, along with not having a clear starting QB. Utah is a decent team, had a good record last year even though they're not in a tough conference.
I expect Michigan to improve a bit in the coming weeks, correct some mistakes and build throughout the season. I'm not sure they have a good QB to run that spread offense, they may need to find a good, athletic QB before that offense can really take off.

That's DickRod in a nutshell. If his gameplan doesn't work, he's completely at a loss as to what to do. It's gonna be fun watching him flail around up there. I actually expected them to be somewhat competent on offense, but that was comedy. It wouldn't shock me if they're NoD level bad on offense this year.

Yep, Alamo Bowl, but at least on that one they made some forward progress.

Screw you and your multiple quoting that I don't know how to do!

1. Minor had 4 carries for 21 yards (but one was for 21, so 3 for 0). Brown had one carry. ONE! I realize that McGuffie and Shaw are just awesome in practice and 4.3 fast, but for the first game, I'd have preferred they used Minor and Brown. Minor needs to fucking learn to hang onto the ball, but Brown is usually good about it. Brown had to be hurt. I have very, very high hopes for him due to his versatility, and one touch is criminally underusing him. As was two catches for Carson Butler (nice snag on the one)

2. I'm not gonna kill McGuffie over not knowing pass blocking. Like you said, as a freshman, it's to be expected. I was just spoiled by Hart's pass blocking.

3. Yeah, I'd say it was Sheridan's fault. He's pretty awful. If he could never see the field again, that'd be just peachy.

There were some positives for UM in that game.

-Carson Butler's nice grab.
- Junior Hemingway's TD.
- Threet's throw on that TD. Steve Schilling not racking up a -12 in protection by Brian at MGoBlog's "Upon Further Review" deal. (Check it out, it's really good. Schilling "earned" a -12 against Vernon Gholston last year).
- Obi Ezeh turning into 2006 David Harris (at least for one game). 15 tackles and a pick? I'll take it.
- K.C Lopata with a 50 yard FG that had some extra room.
- Donovan Warren being pretty damn good.
- Really liked the defensive line.

Bad

- Morgan Trent. Yeeeeeesh. And for the record, I was not one of the homerish UM fans that said Trent was some type of God. I have always called him a mediocre to average corner. Warren, however, is awesome.
- Marell Evans in pass coverage. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh. Let up a 39 yard reception to that RB that killed us.
- 4-3 against four and five wide. Did the Vince Young, Troy Smith, The Horror, Oregon etc.. not teach us anything? NICKEL AND DIME PACKAGES MOTHERFUCKERS! I'd much rather see Warren/Trent/Cissoko/Harrison/Brown than Insert Linebacker Clusterfuck here.
- Blitz. Oh for the love of God, blitz! Pussy ass soft zone doesn't do shit.
- Punt returns? Uh, no
- Martavious Odoms? Let's do a little more moving with the ball when it's in our hands, mmmmmk?
- Nick Sheridan at QB. Or any position.

What really got me was during the first series of the 2nd half, the guys in the booth threw it down to the sideline reporter, who mentioned Rich Rod declined to be interviewed before or after the halftime. Then she mentions that, off-camera, Rich Rod complained that the secondary and o-line needed to play better.

Uh ... ya think, Rich Rod?

// not like anybody here has made that observation over the past eight months.
