Urban F. Meyer (Former OSU, CFB and NFL coach)

All in all - I think this year still worked out for you guys. You had a different head coach for three games, and it was business as usual.
The staff should stay largely intact, I believe.
The distractions will be off the school and will be all on Urbs. You all will be able to just play football.

Best of it - McPornstashe will leave you guys the hell alone now.

and MAYBE....

Urbs is going to go into hiding to go have a visit with McDouchebag.....:biggrin2:

One other thought, too....this one is more about being a father/husband/man than being a coach...and more comforting...

My father was this way as well. He was a husband, and a father...and a professional (not coach, but doesn't matter in this case, so stay with me)...

He was diagnosed with cancer May 5th, 1999. When he found out, he didn't want anyone to pity him. He wanted to make sure that everything was in order in case he didn't beat this thing called cancer. He made sure his insurance was all good so that his family wouldn't fight over the money left over. He made sure that his will was in order, so that his wife wouldn't have to fight with anyone. He'd already made sure prior to his diagnosis that the funeral plot was selected, the casket chosen.

Dad passed on June 5th, 1999. We didn't have to worry about anything. Everything was taken care of.

I'm not saying that's Urban Meyer. But a guy like that thinks like my Dad did.

Maybe he wanted to retire sooner than this. Maybe he wanted to leave after the National Championship season with you all.
He wanted to make sure that when he left, everything was going to be left much better than how he found things. Perhaps he wanted to turn this over to Tom Herman, but his character issues (with Zach Smith) left him uncomfortable with that, and he waited as long as he could for the right guy. His health had other plans, it would seem.

So yes, this year happened, and it was rough. But you have a head coach with 3 games of experience who boatraced some teams. He's not coming in fresh off the bench. So, we'll see how he does, and in some ways, it is going to be rougher for Day because he follows Urban Meyer.

He was a small part of something much larger. It thrived before him and will do so after him

I'd say he's a big part of something that overshadows a lot of things but isnt the most important at the end of the day.
Urban took the program to the pinnacle... it may have only resulted in 1 NC, but he was no small cog. He deserves to be in the same breath as Woody and didnt throttle a kid on his way out...

If he feels, for whatever reason, it's time for him to go, best wishes. And if he is leaving because he feels alienated by Drake and the Board, I commend the low key, positive way he's choosing to step down. At the end of the day, Ohio State University will be fine. The athletic department will be fine. The football program will be fine. He was a small part of something much larger. It thrived before him and will do so after him.
Would you say the football program was thriving for thirteen years under John Cooper? Was 2-10-1 thriving? No national championships, only three conference titles, and only one Rose Bowl?

Have you paid attention to what happened at Michigan since Lloyd Carr retired? What about the drought at Bama before Saban came and set up a semi-pro operation? How have things gone at USC since Pete Carroll skipped town? Don't think Ohio State can't have another dark period. How much does beating Michigan really mean to a kid from New Hampshire?

I haven't forgotten the Cooper years. I think it's perfectly reasonable to be concerned. We were lucky that Urban was available when Tressel got fired. That was a sure thing. Day isn't a sure thing. I'm hoping for the best but I'm prepared for less.

If Urban was still here I'd be prepared for his first loss in The Game at Ann Arbor in year five under Harbaugh. That would be okay. He'd have been 7-1 against Michigan and 4-1 against Harbaugh. If Day starts 0-1 then that will be very different. How will he handle the pressure, the spotlight, and the media scrutiny?

There's no one in Ann Arbor, State College, or East Lansing who isn't celebrating today.

Urbs' legacy for this team will play out after he leaves. Hopefully, it doesn't tank the way that Florida did when he left from down there...

Dude, if you think that these football coaches that didn't have the best record against him are celebrating that he's leaving, you don't know how football coaches are wired. These guys live to attempt to beat the best. Nobody is celebrating that this legend of coaching is leaving now. The FANS might be happy about it, but the coaches are disappointed that he's leaving, trust me.

That's the homer talking. Look at where the offensive linemen on the 2014 team got drafted and compare it to where the offensive linemen on this team get drafted. I'll bet the difference will be significant. Again, it's something we'll have to follow for the next 2-3 years.
The homer in me said we'd whoop Michigan the week before it happened too.
