He was a small part of something much larger. It thrived before him and will do so after him
Would you say the football program was thriving for thirteen years under John Cooper? Was 2-10-1 thriving? No national championships, only three conference titles, and only one Rose Bowl?If he feels, for whatever reason, it's time for him to go, best wishes. And if he is leaving because he feels alienated by Drake and the Board, I commend the low key, positive way he's choosing to step down. At the end of the day, Ohio State University will be fine. The athletic department will be fine. The football program will be fine. He was a small part of something much larger. It thrived before him and will do so after him.
I'd say he's a big part of something that overshadows a lot of things but isnt the most important at the end of the day.
Urban took the program to the pinnacle... it may have only resulted in 1 NC, but he was no small cog. He deserves to be in the same breath as Woody and didnt throttle a kid on his way out...

Have you paid attention to what happened at Michigan since Lloyd Carr retired? What about the drought at Bama before Saban came and set up a semi-pro operation? How have things gone at USC since Pete Carroll skipped town? Don't think Ohio State can't have another dark period. How much does beating Michigan really mean to a kid from New Hampshire?
I haven't forgotten the Cooper years. I think it's perfectly reasonable to be concerned. We were lucky that Urban was available when Tressel got fired. That was a sure thing. Day isn't a sure thing. I'm hoping for the best but I'm prepared for less.
If Urban was still here I'd be prepared for his first loss in The Game at Ann Arbor in year five under Harbaugh. That would be okay. He'd have been 7-1 against Michigan and 4-1 against Harbaugh. If Day starts 0-1 then that will be very different. How will he handle the pressure, the spotlight, and the media scrutiny?
There's no one in Ann Arbor, State College, or East Lansing who isn't celebrating today.
The homer in me said we'd whoop Michigan the week before it happened too. That's the homer talking. Look at where the offensive linemen on the 2014 team got drafted and compare it to where the offensive linemen on this team get drafted. I'll bet the difference will be significant. Again, it's something we'll have to follow for the next 2-3 years.
So is Scott Frost. Ryan Day was never at Oregon and he has as many years coaching under Urban Meyer as he does Chip Kelly. That's a bit unsettling that Helfrich was also a Chip Kelly guy
Interestingly my wife brought this up to me today and that maybe this was a good thing Urban is making this move....He deserves to be in the same breath as Woody and didnt throttle a kid on his way out...
