Urban F. Meyer (Former OSU, CFB and NFL coach)

Would you say the football program was thriving for thirteen years under John Cooper? Was 2-10-1 thriving? No national championships, only three conference titles, and only one Rose Bowl?

Have you paid attention to what happened at Michigan since Lloyd Carr retired? What about the drought at Bama before Saban came and set up a semi-pro operation? How have things gone at USC since Pete Carroll skipped town? Don't think Ohio State can't have another dark period. How much does beating Michigan really mean to a kid from New Hampshire?

I haven't forgotten the Cooper years. I think it's perfectly reasonable to be concerned. We were lucky that Urban was available when Tressel got fired. That was a sure thing. Day isn't a sure thing. I'm hoping for the best but I'm prepared for less.

If Urban was still here I'd be prepared for his first loss in The Game at Ann Arbor in year five under Harbaugh. That would be okay. He'd have been 7-1 against Michigan and 4-1 against Harbaugh. If Day starts 0-1 then that will be very different. How will he handle the pressure, the spotlight, and the media scrutiny?

There's no one in Ann Arbor, State College, or East Lansing who isn't celebrating today.
I know we’d all prefer the obssessive, that-team-up-north-hating native Ohioan, but a guy that can coach can coach. It ends up the same way.

Can he prep and call a big game. He’s done it without his hand held on the road. And he was clearly involved in the game-setting opening drive against that team (hello, mesh routes).

You act like this former football player, who’s quickly and ruthlessly moved up the ranks to prove himself to Urban, is just going to roll over to that dunce Jim Harbaugh because he’s born in a different state. Maybe this guy loves kicking everyone’s ass.

He's never been a head coach before. Everyone loves kicking everyone's ass. Not everyone can do it. Head coaching involves a lot of things. What he did for three games this year was like when my dad let me sit on his lap and steer the car when I was 5 years old. Day was head coaching like I was driving.

Can he recruit? Can he motivate? Can he prepare a practice schedule? Can he develop players? Can he hire good assistants? Can he develop assistants? Can he deal with boosters?

Head coaching isn't plug-and-play. I'm not saying he'll fail. But to simply assume he's going to succeed like Tressel and Meyer did, just because, is, I think, naive. Totally predictable, though, given Buckeye fans' somewhat distorted perception of reality.

I'm hoping Urban stays around the program and doesn't jump back into TV or look for another job a couple years down the line. I'd like to keep him as involved with Buckeye football as he is able.

At least he gets to go out on his own terms (even if the terms suck) rather than being shown the door like every other tOSU coach.
Give him a salary, make him an "analyst," let him scout talent, let him study film on opposing defenses and help with X's and O's. Let him take Earle's place and give the speech prior to Senior Tackle every year.

Rename the stretch of Olentangy River Road that passes in front of the Woody to Urban Meyer Way.

It's also quite idiotic to claim the dark times are upon us like you did a few days ago. :tibor:

Let me give a big shout-out to Urban Meyer and his great family. In seven years, you gave us all a great treasure that we'll never forget. May God bless you.

Another shout-out to Courtney Smith, Michael Drake, the BoT, the PR dept., ESPN, and Brett McMurphy: Congratulations! You all got exactly what you wanted, never mind that you almost killed a good man to get it. Gold stars in the outer office.
