Urban F. Meyer (Former OSU, CFB and NFL coach)

IF this is to be true, I don’t see a lot of drop off with Day as HC. Maybe recruiting falls back nationally but in state should be no problem.

If recruiting falls back to Tressel levels (good but not close to Urban level) you better hope Day can coach as well as him, if not we take quite a step back. The extent of Day's head coaching experience is limited to 3 games against vastly inferior talent so it's largely unknown how well he can coach at the top level.

I have a lot of reservations about hiring a guy with practically no head coaching experience as well, however see Lincoln Riley, Dabo Swinney, Kirby Smart. Day did develop Haskins and it's pretty hard not to recruit well at Ohio State. There isn't another name out there that I would say is for sure a better hire than Day.

I think the issue is he doesn't have hardware to sell. Now should OU stumble and they pull off another 2014, then you have the next Lincoln.

Well Lincoln didn't have any hardware either just a revitalized offense and a trip to the playoffs or two. I'd say it'll be easy to tell if this is the plan though. If he gets a raise above 2 million for next year or beyond it's probably safe to say he's head coach in waiting even if they don't announce it as such.

True, the Heisman came after the hire. Head coach in waiting for 2020 would work, if Day can keep things rolling with Tate in 2019.

Dwayne's draft slot is a pretty good substitute for hardware too.

I think this is the "trial balloon" that Urban wants/needs to go for either health or sanity.

They toss Day out there to indicate to recruits the program is stable, on top of the situation, etc...... and Day probably is in the running.

Mostly, however, this starts discreet communications between tOSU and elite coaches who might also have some interest. A great coach at a successful program likely isn't interested in making a move....... but this is tOSU. Someone from the Urban tree: Mullen, Addazio, etc who have programs likely don't fish their resumes often..... but this is tOSU.

Recruiting under Meyer has been stronger, but mainly it's been more consistent. Recruiting under Tressel had two "off" years, on paper (2003 and 2010), and both were partly due to small classes. Aside from those two off years, Tressel's recruiting, while not quite as good, was reasonably comparable to Meyer's. The graph below shows data from Rivals - I would have used 247, but they are missing data for earlier years.

Addazio? Good God Man.

There is one obvious choice to succeed Urban - Matt Campbell.

Day has been impressive but the lack of HC and Ohio ties is a bad combination.
OSU isn't a place to get OJT.

Best case by far is Urban gets his health in order and continues for 5+ years.
Stop the Matt Campbell stuff. I would take Fickell back over him. OSU isn't a place to get OJT? How is that working out for Oklahoma, Georiga, and Clemson?

But if his health issues were that bad, how the hell is he going to coach in 2019? It doesn't equate.
He might feel that the issues aren't to the point yet of preventing him from coaching for another year, but also realizes that the issue is only going to get worse. My point is you never know with growths in the brain...some scary shit. He might coach for another couple years, or then he just may might up and say "Fuck this, I'm done" tomorrow.
