If I recall correctly, he told the press that he has an arachnoid cyst, which is very serious. It is a progressive and debilitating medical problem. It is made worse by stress and surgery is not an option. He may have to consider other options to treat it. He is worried that the stress of coaching would lead to adverse effects on his quality of life.

If you know anyone living with serious chronic pain, ask them what they would pay for a cure. 12 million bucks? Chump change. He doesn't need it financially and the probability that he will experience growing and perhaps untreatable headaches is very high.

He would be a fool to take a coaching job again.

... or the story about the cyst was overblown and a convenient way to step away without telling tOSU President and Board to go fuck themselves.

If he does come back, then expect that Cyst to be brought up as bs going forward. No way do you enter an NFL coaching job and don't expect stress. No way do you accept a job with the Jacksonville Jaguars, one of the worst teams in the NFL and not expect an immense amount of stress. Expecting that a rookie QB in Lawrence is even going to relieve some of that stress is also insane. I hope Urban stays retired, not only because of his health but because of what the narrative will be regarding his health if he does accept the position.

Like who? I just don't see our staff being an NFL geared staff. I don't see LJsr or Mattison at their ages leaving, Day is staying put as being an OC(even for an NFL team) would be a step back, Hartline is a possibility but I think he really likes recruiting and teaching the young guys, Alford and Washington: see Hartline explanation, I don't think Coombs returns to NFL after 1 year away, Stud and Wilson could be maybes as could Marrioti

From my perspective, I recognize the following:
  • Urban is welcome to do as he damn well pleases, and I wish him success in all of his endeavors.
  • If there are Ohio State staff members that he would like to accompany him, then that is up to each and every one of those individuals. In any case, I wish them success in all of their endeavors.
  • While Ohio State athletics have benefitted greatly by the effort and work of all those above, there are always new people that can do the job. Sure, it may not be the same and it could be worse; yet, there's also the chance that more positivity will come out of it.
In my career, I have come to recognize that there are bottom, mid, and top performers. We all want the top performers as long as they can be around us and we benefit from them. That just won't be the case. So, just like the 2020-1 Buckeye team and staff... enjoy them while we have them.

Him going in a vacuum isn’t a bad thing. The trickle down on if he poaches staff, and how that would affect recruits (Dennis and Ewers, etc) is something to consider. This is really the only reason I’d prefer he stay put, at least besides the obvious health concerns. But it’s not my place to worry about the guy’s health for him.

Urban Meyer Rumors: NFL Insiders Believe Former OSU HC Will Take Jaguars Job

Former Ohio State and Florida coach Urban Meyer is reportedly "close" to accepting the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coaching position.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, there are "rumors" floating that Meyer is leaning toward taking the job and retaining interim general manager Trent Baalke. The Jaguars' search is essentially at a standstill as they await Meyer's decision.

Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network report Meyer has also been in contact with the Los Angeles Chargers about their head coaching job.

Ranking the Jaguars head coaching candidates from least to best

1. Urban Meyer – Former Ohio State head coach
Urban Meyer is the most talked-about candidate for the open head coaching position with the Jaguars. The reason Meyer is a top candidate is that he has a clear-cut vision as a head coach, a culture setter, and a proven program-builder during his times at the University of Florida and Ohio State. Some of the concern with Meyer’s potential hiring is how health issues have forced him to resign in the past.

The Jaguars’ young roster is what gives Urban Meyer the recognition as their top candidate. In Bucky Brooks’ (NFL Media Analyst) analysis of the Jaguars coaching candidates, he accurately stated “Meyer’s vision and perspective on building a championship program would serve him well in Jacksonville.”

2. Robert Saleh – San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator
Robert Saleh should be a top candidate for the Jaguars during their head coaching hiring process. He’s the mastermind behind developing the San Francisco 49ers’ exceptional defense, although sadly injuries have prevented them from reaching their potential again this season.

The Jaguars could use someone like Saleh to revitalize their young defense. Jacksonville has players like Myles Jack, Dawuane Smoot, K’Lavon Chaisson, josh Allen, and C.J. Henderson, who could use a mentor like Saleh. Even though Saleh doesn’t have a ton of experience on the offensive side, I’m sure he learned plenty of tips and tricks from Kyle Shanahan.

Unlike the Jaguars’ other head coach candidates, Saleh previously spent time with the Jaguars as a linebackers coach from 2014 to 2016.
