Tight End Davis to Be Trojans' Young Turk

By David Wharton, Times Staff Writer

Not many quarterbacks possess the size and speed of Vince Young, so top-ranked USC is taking an unusual step to prepare for the Texas star.

During the early part of practice Saturday, Trojan tight end Fred Davis lined up behind center against the starting defense, doing his best Young impersonation.

<table style="clear: left; margin-right: 5px; margin-top: 5px; background-color: rgb(233, 240, 242);" align="left" width="10%"> <tbody><tr> <td class="navmainsection" align="center">ADVERTISEMENT</td> </tr> <tr> <td align="center"><!-- Ad Space: html.ng/tag=std&site=latimes&color=none&edition=newspaper&content=sports&channel=college&area=usc&adtype=cube&adsize=300x250 --> <!-- HTML ad style -->

<!-- /Ad Space: html.ng/tag=std&site=latimes&color=none&edition=newspaper&content=sports&channel=college&area=usc&adtype=cube&adsize=300x250 --></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> That meant running the option and throwing the occasional pass from the shotgun formation.

"We just wanted to get the feel of tackling a bigger guy," linebacker coach Rocky Seto said.

Davis played some quarterback at Rogers High in Toledo, Ohio. At 6 feet 4 and 225 pounds, the sophomore is almost as big as Young, if not as quick-footed.

"I've got to move around a little bit," he said of his new role. "Be as fast as I can."

Coach Pete Carroll said that after watching "tons" of film on the second-ranked Longhorns, he and his staff will finalize their game plan for the Jan. 4 Rose Bowl on Monday, then begin giving it to players when practices resume Tuesday.

At that point, Davis will devote much of his time to receiving duties.

Still, defensive coaches — who called him "Vince Davis" on Saturday — plan to keep using him as a stand-in.

"We'll steal him here and there," Seto said. "Just to get the looks we need."

Kind of silly using Fred Davis to imitate Young.
I'm sure Fred is fast and big.
He's just not as fast or as big.
You would need a 6-5, 235 power forward from the basketball team.
And even then he wouldn't be as elusive!
Don't get me wrong, I think SC wins this game.
Vince Young is a physical freak. You can't just find his like anywhere.

I think Fred Davis is an excellent choice to simulate Vince Young. As you said, VY is a freak that can't be found anywhere else. A bball forward wouldn't work well because a bball player won't necessarily move the same way a football player would.

USC quietly declared Leinart ineligible earlier this month after the quarterback appeared in a promotional segment for ESPN — a violation of NCAA rules. After ESPN aired the piece, which was filmed after the Trojans' victory over UCLA, USC reported the violation and immediately petitioned the NCAA to reinstate Leinart.
"Whenever we are aware that media outlets ask student-athletes to do these kinds of tags we immediately cut them off," said Tim Tessalone, USC's sports information director. "Unfortunately, this one slipped by."
Leinart's actions were seen as "unintentional and inadvertent" according to the NCAA's Kent Barrett.
"This was the type of thing where it was obvious the student-athlete was not attempting to become an endorser of a network," Barrett said.
The situation came to light when USC's sports information staff turned down interveiw requests for the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner. Tessalone said Leinart had been barred from participating in media activities until after Christmas. Leinart had been practicing with the team in preparation for the Jan. 4 Rose Bowl, but Barrett said that athletes can practice and take part in team and school activities while petitions are being considered by the NCAA's reinstatement staff.

Hey buckeyes. First off I want to extend deep respect to your team. Ever since our game this year I've become a fan of Ohio State and in doing so have started to hate Michigan.....funny how they go together. Anyway, you guys have one hell of a team and I hope you stomp the beJesus out of ND (no offense Irish). I'll be watching and rooting for you.

Good luck

PS Can we borrow Hawk on Jan 4th?

I am heading out to the West Coast here in a bit, and I just wanted to post a message wishing you all good luck on your trip to stomp on Notre Dame. I will be in attendance at the Rose Bowl, and I can only hope that this game lives up to the hype. I will be in Vegas for your guys' game, and will be putting my hard earned dollars down on tOSU, do they have any type of bpcash currency exchange in Vegas?

In any event, I am confident about the Rose Bowl, more confident than I was when I went to Columbus (ou's defeat of nike u last night combined with ASU losing to Rutgers makes me doubt the Pac-10 even more, if Fresno State loses to Tulsa, it will be impossible for me to view USC as the better team). The confidence that tOSU gave to our fanbase, coaching staff and players is immeasurable. I believe that most of the nation is overlooking our other offensive tools, and that they also don't realize how great our defense actually is. Reggie Bush scares me a bit, as does the fact that we haven't faced a lot of vertical passing attacks, but as long as we pressure Mr. Leinart, we can contain their offense. I will post my recap of the game and atmosphere when I return.

Good luck and Godspeed, and may you all have a Happy New Year.

The confidence that tOSU gave to our fanbase, coaching staff and players is immeasurable.
It may sting a little, but it was for a good cause. We will all rejoice in unison together when you take down the
"greatest team ever" hype once and for all.
