(unofficial) Rose Bowl thread - USC vs. Texas (merged)

Of all the tragedies in the world, Matt Whinert losing a football game does not rank very high on the list. So if he wants to say they are still better, blah blah blah, whatever, but don't expect anyone to feel sorry for him because he lost a football game, or because he "came back for his senior year" or whatever. He lost...too bad, it happens. You either man up and deal with it gracefully or whine like a movie star whose champagne wasn't cold enough. I don't expect him to like losing...I do expect him to have a measure of respect for his teammates, and the team that just beat him.

You are right. Ken Dorsey showed class, while Leinart showed he is an ass.
Yeah, he's an ass for saying that his team, that had just won 38 straight games, is better than the Texas team, that they just out-gained and lost to by a grand total of 3 points. Definately an ass. :roll1:
What did you want him to say? He didn't say that Texas was a bad team or that they didn't deserve it, he said that Texas came up with the big play(s) at the end, which they did.

Texas was the better team tonight. Period.

He should have said that.

what a great game... VY is SICK...

at the same time, i do have to give some props to Pete Carroll. he was EXTREMELY gracious in defeat. he basically said that he knew it would come to an end some time, and that when it did, he was sure glad it was against someone as good as Texas... pretty classy if you ask me...

Texas' Brown sheds critics

<table class="byln" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="428"> <tbody><tr valign="bottom"> <td class="byln" width="328">1/5/2006, 6:15 a.m. ETBy JIM VERTUNO
The Associated Press</td><td width="3"> </td><td width="97"></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — For all the critics who poked fun at Mack Brown by calling him "Coach February," it's time to show a bit more respect. Calling him "National Champion" will do just fine.
After years of frustration and near-misses with teams from Tulane to North Carolina to Texas, the Longhorns coach finally shed the reputation of a coach who can't win the big one.
With a thrilling 41-38 Rose Bowl victory Wednesday night over No. 1 Southern California on the legs and right arm of quarterback Vince Young, the 54-year-old Brown won his first national championship and Texas' first outright title since 1969.
<script language="JavaScript"></script> <noscript> </noscript>"It's not about me," Brown said. "That's why it didn't bother me then, and that's why I'm not mad at them now. They'll just be quiet for a while. They'll be writing and saying different things."
For years, Brown has played runner-up to the likes of Florida State's Bobby Bowden and Oklahoma's Bob Stoops. At North Carolina, he built the Tar Heels into an Atlantic Coast Conference power, but couldn't get past FSU.
At Texas, Brown built a reputation as a master recruiter in February but couldn't beat Stoops' Sooners and therefore couldn't win the Big 12. He finally beat Oklahoma this season after five straight losses and won his first career conference championship.
The win even elevated Brown near the status of Texas icon Darrell Royal, the 81-year-old patriarch of the program who won national titles in 1963 and '69 and shared a third in 1970.
One of the first things Brown wanted to do after the game was call Royal, an ardent Brown supporter who watched the game from a stadium luxury box.
"He's wanted us to win for a long time," Brown said.
Brown's national championship game matched him against a Trojans team that drew comparisons with the best in history. He beat Pete Carroll, the USC coach whose hip and freewheeling West Coast style captivated college football and made Brown's folksy approach look dull.

For a month, Brown's second-ranked team heard the praise heaped on USC and quietly notched it away in their memory.
"We didn't get no respect from none of the media," Young said. "We really did work hard for it. We wanted to show the world we did deserve to play in this game and we deserved to go out there and get a victory. That's what we did."
While Young was the Longhorns' dynamic leader on the field all season, Texas won the national title with a team built to repeat in 2006 if the quarterback returns for his senior season. Fourteen starters return next season, including most of an offense that averaged 51 points in 2005.
<script language="JavaScript"></script> <noscript> </noscript>"I think he's one of the great players ever to play college football," Brown said. "If he comes back next year, which we think he will, he'll have a great shot to win the Heisman."
Brown's leap from Big 12 runner-up to national title hinged on his relationship with Young, who was the top-high school recruit in the country when he signed with Texas in 2002.
Brown and the kid from the tough streets of Houston's Fourth Ward bonded like the coach had rarely done with his players.
The coach was smart enough to resist the urge to bench Young after a shutout loss to Oklahoma in 2004. Instead, he pushed Young to improve as a thrower while also learning to trust his instincts as a runner.
It was the perfect combination against USC when Young ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 267 yards. By the end of the game, the Trojans were helpless to stop Young from scrambling 8 yards for the final touchdown with 19 seconds left.
"Coach Brown is a phenomenal guy," Young said. "To see my guys happy, with the coaches and the fans, that's why I love playing football."

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- Vince Young and Texas are second no more to Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and Southern California.

With the national championship down to a final play, fourth down and 5 yards to go, Young scrambled untouched for an 8-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left and the No. 2 Longhorns stunned the top-ranked Trojans 41-38 in the Rose Bowl on Wednesday night.

It was the ultimate revenge for Young, the bitterly disappointed runner-up to Bush for the Heisman Trophy last month.

On a night when he ran for 200 yards and passed for 267 more, Young capped a performance that Texas fans will remember forever by scoring his third TD and running for a 2-point conversion to end Southern Cal's 34-game winning streak and deny the Trojans an unprecedented third straight national championship.

"It's so beautiful," Young said as he received the MVP crystal. "Don't you think that's beautiful? It's coming home all the way to Austin, Texas."

With the two highest scoring teams in the country, many figured it would come down to which team had the ball last. It basically did.
Texas players streamed onto the field with the Longhorns' first outright national title since 1969. Young stood on the sideline in a sea of falling confetti, arm raised toward the crowd, and senior tackle William Winston unfurled a big, white Longhorns flag.
The Longhorns (13-0) won their 20th in a row, overcoming the 38-26 lead USC (12-1) held with 4 1/2 minutes left.
While the Longhorns' band blared "The Eyes of Texas" in front of a sea of burnt orange, the USC players looked startled. Some put their hands to their heads, while others dejectedly took off their helmets.

"Well, we couldn't stop them when we had to," USC coach Pete Carroll said. "The quarterback ran all over the place.
"This is their night," he said. "It's wonderful doing what we've been doing. We didn't get it done."
Said Trojans quarterback Matt Leinart, the Heisman winner a year ago: "I still think we're a better football team. They just made the plays in the end."
Leinart did his part in his final college game while Bush was less than his best. Leinart passed for 365 yards, and his 22-yard TD strike to Dwyane Jarrett put USC ahead 38-26 with 6:42 left.
<!-- BEGIN MEDIA BOX NUMBER 4 --><!-- END MEDIA BOX NUMBER 4 -->Earlier, Bush soared into the end zone on a 26-yard run, part of his 82 yards rushing. He also had 95 yards on six catches - and a boneheaded lateral that swung momentum Texas' way in the first half.
"It's been a great run. We've done some special things," Bush said. "I don't think we should be ashamed about anything."
In a game that produced more than 1,100 yards, a defensive stand was key for Texas.
On fourth-and-2 from USC'S 45-yard line with 2:09 left, Carroll gambled. He decided to try to seal the game with his vaunted offense, dubbed by many the best ever in college football, and keep the ball out of Young's hands. But when LenDale White came up inches short, Texas defenders jumped in the air and charged off the field as Young trotted on.
<!-- BEGIN MEDIA BOX NUMBER 5 --><!-- END MEDIA BOX NUMBER 5 -->"If you make that first down, you're squatting on the football to win the game," Carroll said. "We just missed it. By what - two inches?"
Young stood in the pocket and passed the Longhorns to a first-and-10 at the 13. After a 5-yard scramble, he misfired on two passes to set up fourth-and-5 at the 8.
The Trojans brought pressure, as they did all night, but Young broke free, found a lane and raced to the right pylon.
The Longhorns erupted. One pounded the turf as he lay face down on the turf, while the shocked Trojans futilely looked toward officials, hoping they'd say Young stepped out of bounds.
USC had one last chance, and it wasn't a good one. On the last play of the game from just beyond midfield, Leinart's pass sailed high over Jarrett's head around the 25.
With two of the most storied programs in college football, teams seemingly destined to decide the national title this season, the Rose Bowl was dripping with pageantry and tradition. Tommy Trojan atop Traveler galloped along the USC sideline. Meanwhile, big ol' Bevo, the Longhorns' beloved steer, guarded the Texas tunnel.
The Trojans think of the Rose Bowl as their home away from home - no team has won the "Granddaddy of Them All" more often. But a Texas-sized contingent of Longhorns fans turned half the hallowed stadium burnt orange and was loud enough to force USC into at least one penalty for delay of game.
Texas led 16-10 at halftime, but being behind after two quarters was nothing new to the Trojans. Four times this season they trailed after 30 minutes and regained control in the third quarter.
And that's what they did again, forcing a punt by Texas and driving 62 yards on seven plays with White finishing with a 4-yard run that made it 17-16 USC.
Young, back at the site of his breakout performance last year against Michigan, responded with a 14-yard touchdown run, reaching a long arm toward the pylon to make it 23-17.
On fourth-and-1 from the Texas 12, White burst through the line for a touchdown, his third of the game that made it 24-23.
On the second play of the second quarter, Bush bolted down the middle for 37 yards with a screen pass, but inexplicably pitched the ball sideways to unprepared teammate Brad Walker. Texas All-America defensive back Michael Huff fell on the loose ball, and Bush came off the field with his hands on his helmet, shaking his head, looking as baffled as anyone by what he had just done.
Texas turned the break into its first points, with Young passing and running into USC territory and David Pino booting a 46-yard field.
When Young went no-huddle, he found tight end David Thomas a couple of times and showed Bush how to pull off a late pitch.
Young went 10 yards on an option keeper, and just before his knee touched turf - or so it seemed - chucked the ball to Selvin Young, who took it the final 12 yards for a score and Texas' first lead, 9-7.
Replays appeared to show the quarterback's knee hitting the ground before he let go of the ball, but with Selvin Young standing way out on the playing field, officials never stopped play for a review.
Less than 2:30 later, Texas was on the board again as Ramonce Taylor, known as Bush Lite around Austin, ran 30 yards to make it 16-7.

I have no problem with Leinart thinking they are a better team, Hell cryami thought they still were after losing to us, but have the grace to either 1) not say anything or 2) give credit to the better team on January 4.

Respect yourself and you team enough to accept the results, at least publicly.

Later in the post-game presser Leinart showed considerably more poise than in his reaction immediately after the loss on the field of play. He heaped huge praise on Vince Young - a "freakish athlete" and Texas as a whole.

I'm glad he did that because the Trojans had just been beaten in an absolute gem of a game. After all, what more could any football fan have wanted? A seemingly impossible task, down by 2 scores with 4 minutes and change remaining, overcome through a combination of great play by Texas aided by the failed (and gutsy) call by PC to go for it on 4th down, capped by Young getting the final go ahead score in the game on 4th and 5 with seconds ticking down -- are you kidding me?

A marvellous hugely enjoyable game. Truly an instant classic.

A very well deserved win by the Horns. A well played game by SC.

Congratulations on your first undisputed National Championship since 1970.

Some quick Vince Young numbers

for fun, VY vs OSU and VY vs USC:

VY vs OSU
rushing: 20/76 3.8 ypc 0 TD
passing: 18/29 270 yds 2TD/2INT/3 sacks
UT total O: 382 yds 23 points

VY vs USC
rushing: 19/200 10.5 ypc 3TD
passing: 30/40 267 yds 0 INT/0 TD/0 sacks
UT total O: 583 yds and 41 points

When we have a bad offense and a great D we are one dimensional and get shredded by the media. When USC has a great Offense and a shitty defense they are one of the top 5 teams of all time before they even finish the season.

As amazing at it may sound Craig James is the only national media type I heard give defense its due and pick OSU over ND and UT over USC, but i don't listen to many of them so maybe he wasn't alone(yeah right).

From post #82

METHOD I PREDICTION

TEXAS____40 points___422 yards
USC______36 points___475 yards

METHOD II PREDICTION

TEXAS____48 points___506 yards
USC______39 points___475 yards

Both teams' scores fell within the expected range. As usual, the prediction on the yards is less accurate.
