(unofficial) Rose Bowl thread - USC vs. Texas (merged)

Couple Random Thoughts on the game...

First, was anyone here surprised by Vince Young? I was amazed, but I wasn't surprised. Great player, great performance. No Surprise. That look onthe SC Defensive ends face when VY ran him over was priceless... but I empathized a little with him... at least he didn't get batted away like a gnat like the blitzing db's were. Anyone on this board want to persist in the argument that VY will be a WR at the next level. (You know who you are:wink2: )

Second, Dwayne Jarrett is a stud. Period. Dude catches everything. Props to Lendale White too... I hate to say this, but he remiends me of a certain #13, at least stylistically. (Yes, I just said stylisticallly, piss off).

I don't know who precisely was in the gaem for Texas on the Lendale white stop on 4th down... but big Props to the Texas Caoching staff, Chizek or whoever was responsible for rotating their young kids in the 4th quarter... they were fresh, and it showed... and whoever was on the field got the stop because they were rested. Both those D's were sucking wind at the end, and they both fought their asses off.

Leinart's comments aside (He's got Hunky Nick Lachey's shoulder to cry on anyway), and I didn't watch the postgame because I went to bed. But I thought that PC's immediate postgame comments showed genuine disappointment and was very respectful to Texas. A class Moment. Mack Brown, likewise, when he recognized SC's winstreak and accoplishments whiel he was on the podium receiving the Trophy.

Does anyone else feel, watching Vince Young, that Uncle Rico's throwing motion is finaly vindicated? I think in the first half, he threw a pass to the flat, and I swear that paly was going to end with Napoleon getting knocked off his bike, and Mack Brown yelling, "That's what I'm talking about."

How good is the Texas secondary? I dont' remember if I put Mike Huff at the top of my BP awards ballot. But if I did. I feel pretty good about it. (I put Greg Blue up near the top too, and I was feeling pretty good about that Monday nigth.) Whatever... great players. Reggie Bush disappeared for key portions of this game... and that is a testament to the Texas D and probbaly as much a reason that they won as VY.... and as great as they were, USC still put 38 on them.

All in all... there wasn't a bad unit in this game, that I saw. Lot of great palyers making great plays... and I'll honestly say that while I didn't give up on VY, there was a point at which I thought SC had done enough to win. It was truly a he who socres last type game.

Great game last night on the field and on sidelines. The USC sweater girls and how about those UT babes wearing the chaps. Gotta hand it to both schools there as they also finished #1 and 1A in sideline visuals.

I like how the camera man snuck around behind the texas pom squad to get a better look at the chaps. Having been friends with one or two of them at school, i can tell you that this happens quite often. God I love Texas

What was up with all of the stupid pitches in this bowl season? Troy Smith, Reggie Bush, and Vince Young all made ill-advised pitches when their teams were getting ready to score, with only Young getting the ball to his target (even though he was down IMO). I'd have to think that JT, Mack, and Petey hated to see that happen. Luckily OSU won by plenty even with the turnovers. USC was cruising last night until Bush's bad pitch. That seemed to get Texas back in the game. Who knows if Texas would have been able to pull it out if Bush just goes down on that play.

I also have issue with the Texas punt returner (Ross?) I like that he was fighting for all he could get, but on that first punt fumble he was holding the ball out away from his body. To make it worse he kept doing it the whole game. He's just lucky that he didn't get hit like that again. That fumble shifted the momentum of the game to USC after Texas stoned them on the first series and would have had great field position.

I think Keith Jackson is now retarded. Every other thing he says sounds like it is coming from a first grader. Retire for good already.

GREAT game from an offensive standpoint - both teams were basically unstoppable. USC stopped itself and threw away some points early, and TX stopped itself on occassion throughout and threw away some points as well.

V Young was absolutely electrifying - like we knew he would be against a "D" such as USC's. He passed extremely accurately, he saw the field well, and of course he totally overmatched the USC D athletically when he ran.

We knew that USC had no defense, but one question I have for TX - where were your linebackers? I don't think a linebacker made a single tackle all night. There was never anybody in the middle to stop White - they usually had two safeties in the middle getting blown away by USC's OL. #40 was out of it the whole night. UT's secondary made virtually every tackle.
USC has so many weapons, though, it would take a truly great defense to stop them more than 1/2 the time.

It looked like VY could have pulled it down and run at will, even more than he actually did, especially the first 3 quarters. He showed great vision and made some nice completions even when he had a wide open running lane.
USC has no defense whatsoever - they make ND look pretty good. I can't believe that on that 4th and 5, they did not have at least one guy shadowing VY - you absolutely can't let him beat you down there by running it. Terrible defense.

This game really should have been something like 54 - 51, with the same result. I think the better team definitely won the game, and both teams' players and coaches showed class after the game.

That was better than when the camera guy got behind the OSU cheerleaders when they where doing their post TD kneely bowing thing. It took him 5 seconds to realize that their asses were hanging out every time they bowed down. That was some good tv.

No kidding. I'm just embarrassed for him now, I've moved past hating his stupid old ass. Fouts has no excuse however, he's just an idiotic cocksucker.

Anyone else get the feeling USC was done for when ABC and Fouts started the Leinhardt and his daddy suck job mid way through the 2nd half?

Reminded me so much of the soljah and his daddy spiel, I tasted puke in my mouth from 3 years ago.

First and foremost- Great Game Horns! It has been said over and over again already in this thread, but what a game. With Texas winning the National Championship and Penn State finishing 3rd in the country, that makes OSU look that much better. I truly believe that USC was a good team, but HIGHLY over-rated and over-hyped. If they played a slate half as difficult as Texas or OSU over the last 3 yrs, would they have had the same stellar record? Maybe they would have. The Pac-10 just seems to be more bark than bite comparatively. Not to take anything away from their accomplishments, but....

Secondly, the USC players need to take a lesson in humility. Leinhart and a couple of others kept saying in their interviews that they Lost the game more than Texas won the game. Leinhart even said that USC was still the better team, but didn't execute. Excuse me, but wouldn't that only mean they were not the better team? The ONLY thing that matters is that they did not win. You can try to get philosophical and say that you would win 99 times out of 100 tries, but that does not matter. You play the game to determine who is better NOW. Not yesterday, not tomorrow, or next year- TODAY. Today they are not the better team. I have never really bought into the whole argument that despite a loss someone could still have the better team. The ball bounces the way it bounces. Be a man, step up and say you got beat without excuses or extra caveats.

Just a little venting on my part- Sorry.

Again great game Longhorns. Savor the flavor while you can, because next year there will be a certain team from :oh: :io: gunning for you at your house!

I think it's kind of interesting and funny that Vince Young keeps breaking Troy Smith's records. Not that I think they belong on the same page in the storybook of college football, but check this out: in 2004, Smith runs for more yards vs. Michigan than any other quarterback ever had against Michigan. I think he ran for 500+ yards. But a month later, Young ran for 1,500+ yards against Michigan. Smith no longer has that record. Then, Smith breaks the BCS bowl record for most total offense by a single player. That record held for 2 days, as Young broke that record last night.

Congratulations to Texas and to Young. I hope he goes pro because I think the Bucks have a good chance of beating a Young-less Texas next year. But I also think that, if Mili's right about the salary cap for rookies in 2007, he's got a lot more to lose ($$$) than he would gain (Heisman) if he stays.

The <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><ST1:pTexas coaches made the decision to put as much speed on the field as possible. We had 5, 6, and at times even 7 DB’s in the game almost the whole game. As a result we were able to “slow” Reggie bush and the passing game…kinda. The other result was that the middle of the defense was weak.
<O:p</O:p
Also, I have yet to figure out why our defense was cramping so much

Congrats on winning a classic, Longhorns! We Buckeyes know how good a feeling it is to snap someone's 34-game win streak and hold that crystal football. I'm really glad that it was you this year - after Sept. 10th, I really felt you were the team that could beat USC. :)

Congrats, and I hope to see you in Austin next fall!

I just like seeing "texas pom squad' in italics, because it looks like "texas porn squad".

Huge congrats on the NC.

tOSU's merchandise sales record may be broken by Texas this year. But I'm fine with that, since they knocked off USC.

Horn fans - one other huge prop -- to your band.

They were better coordinated, played a better (and more appropriate) choice of music.

And they didn't embarass themselves with crotch grabbing Jacko imitations like the prophylactic's bunch of shade-wearing marionettes.
