(unofficial) Rose Bowl thread - USC vs. Texas (merged)

I don't see what's so wrong with him saying that USC is the better team. He doesn't have an obligation to be politically correct.
yes, I'm sure Charlie Weis would have been given that grace had he said something like that. SC was hyped as the greatest thing to ever happen in CFB, and they couldn't even beat Texas in 05.
2. If your season potentially rides on one first down, and you have a Heisman Trophy winning running back on your team ... well, you might want to have him on the field. It's a little unorthodox, I know. But it's probably a good idea.
I really don't understand this argument. This isn't the pac-10. even against them, PC would try to force the issue with Bush for short yardage, when you have an obvious short yardage, bettis-esque back in White.

Bush was not that dominant, White was. He can go shine his heisman for him, b/c the best RB in that game was by far mr White.

Just having Reggie Bush on the field means they have to account for him. Even if you line him up at H-Back and have him run to the flat, that's one less person in the box to stop White. Not saying he should have gotten the ball. Just the threat of him getting it could have changed how Texas played that down.

1. Congratulations Longhorn fans on a great win, a great team, and a great season. Good luck going for the Trifecta.

2. To all the people who said "USC's offense is overrated, they pad their stats against inferior competition, wait till they face a great defense", try on 38 points, 30 first downs, and 574 yards of offense for size. Those 38 points would put SC #5 in scoring offense. 574 yards would put them #1 in total offense and just 5 yards short of their season average. All against a great defense.

What you should've said is "wait till they face a team that is better than them". Nobody was last year, only Texas was this year, and LSU may or may not have been two years ago, but nobody will ever know.

3. It's funny to consider that had Vince Young won the Heisman and USC the Rose Bowl, pictures of Matt Leinart doing the pose would've drawn the word "classless" in this thread at least 5 times. Not a knock on Vince, just a knock on certain posters.

In the same vein, had Reggie Bush's knee been down before he lateraled to Brad Walker for the touchdown while the replay system was "malfunctioning", the howls of injustice would be heard every time the game came up (just like the SC-VaTech PI call and the SC-ND push). Not a detraction from Texas. Not an excuse. Just a knock on certain posters.

4. I'll be interviewing for a job next week, so anyone who accuses me of not being around as much because of the loss can kiss my KWII.

5. Congratulations to the 2005 National Champion Texas Longhorns, and congratulations to the 2006 Fiesta Bowl Champion Ohio State Buckeyes.

And congratulations to USC for the latest long run of 34 wins in college football, back-to-back years of Heisman trophy winners and much else that had the Trojans on top of the world.

Good luck in your interview methomps. Are they taking you to a Greek restaurant?

Texas' Defense

Vince Young was outstanding during this game, but UT's D was very overshadowed during this game. USC scored 38 points, which is a great amount of points, but do you all remember when everyone was saying that one of the key factors was going to be UT's defense against Reggie Bush? Reggie did average over 6 yards per carry, but other than two plays, he was kept in check. Even as well as V. Young played, I think that if Reggie Bush had of ran for over 125 yards that it is quite possible that we could be looking at a different National Champion, right now. Some teams fared better, but with all the hype on Reggie coming into this game, UT handled him pretty well. Any thoughts or opinions?

38 points is great but when you average 49 per game AND you've been heralded as the greatest offense of all time AND you get stopped on fourth and 2 to allow the game winning drive for the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, I'd say the Texas D did their job.

I'm sorry, but when a defense gives up 574 yards, 30 first downs, and almost 7 yards per play, I'm not going to sign their praises. Keep in mind that the media-heralded "great offense of all time" racked up their stats against a bunch of weak teams. Hell, we had 617 yards against the ND defense, and ND held USC to their lowest output both in scoring and in yardage, so that shows just how bad the defenses USC faced all year were. True, the Texas defense came up with a big play or two, but they really didn't contain the USC offense by any stretch of the imagination.

Gene Chizik is one of the best defensive coordinators in the country. He came to Texas this season with the understanding he was interested in becoming a head coach somewhere.
Regardless if he stays on goes, Chizik can do wonders with his career by helping the Horns beat the undefeated two-time defending champions USC Trojans at the Rose Bowl. He called it the ultimate challenge.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- END VIDEOBAR -->Chizik actually has a longer winning streak than the current Texas squad. He was the defensive coordinator for the undefeated Auburn Tigers last season. This year, he’s got a chance to win a BCS National Championship.
Chizik’s 29th consecutive victory would be the 20th straight win for the Longhorns, which would snap USC’s at 34. Incidentally, Chizik lost to the Trojans in 2003 when Matt Leinart made his first start at quarterback with the Trojans – a game Chizik said was very physical.
“There’s a lot of carryover with what they’re doing on offense now as to what they did then. I don’t think they try to reinvent the wheel at all. They do a great job of getting mismatches, but I think it all comes down to … power football. There’s a lot of people aware of how athletic they are, but they’re very physical as well,” he said.
