UEFA Champions League (Official Thread)

Shakhtar Donetsk bag a 2nd. Douglas Costa with great control of a long pass smashes in on his 2nd touch. Nice little goal from the Brazilian & big goal for Shakhtar Donetsk to go back up on aggregate 2-1 after the Lewandowski goal at the end of the first half.

How did van Persie not score there ? The initial shot was difficult given the angle & Lopez did a tremendous job of pushing it off the bar, but he completely whiffed on the much easier 2nd attempt. It was even on his stronger left foot too. That would've been a huge blow to Madrid if he could've capitalized on that glorious chance.

Mats Hummels heads in a monumental 2nd away goal for Borussia Dortmund off a corner. 2-2. Shakhtar Donetsk have given up late goals in both halves. Might be there undoing in the end.

I've never heard a final whistle blow while a corner was being lined up.

It's very rare, but I have seen it on a few occasions. Never seen it in a game anywhere even close to this magnitude, though. Very odd the ref called the game so quickly, but didn't detract from what a remarkable game it was. About as good a 1-1 game as you'll ever see from the biggest clubs in the world. Could've been a completely different story for United if de Gea didn't play probably his best game at the club yet. Hopefully the 2nd leg at Old Trafford will be just as good, because this has been a very entertaining affair so far.

Guess I wasn't paying that close attention to the commentary. I didn't realize that Gus Johnson identified Ryan Giggs as the "Most-Decorated English Player."

Oh well. Unless Johnson gets sick, quits or gets fired, FOX isn't turning around since they want to put their own spin on things. Game 1 in the books. Only can improve (although, Dennis Miller seemed to get worse on MNF).

Going back to the ref calling an end to the game before a corner kick was given, it happened again today during the Roma-Juventus game. Roma were up 1-0 & Juventus were waiting for Buffon to get in the box before kicking it & the ref just ended the game. The Juventus players protested pretty hard for at least a minute or so after the final whistle was blown. It's completely the refs discretion to make the call, but more often than not, they will let the corner or set piece be taken before calling an end to the game.

I think Arsene Wenger is moving towards John L. Smith territory (or the like) and will be screaming at reporters by season's end.

It really does seem like the end (last season), because he's blowing up more-and-more these days.
