UCF Golden Knights (2017 National Champs....sort of)

I'm with you. Tournaments/playoffs introduce a lot of randomness/luck.

That said, if you just want to go by regular season then you are never going to have a "true" champion in CFB because they don't all play each other.

Hell, you could make the same case about conference champions anymore. Why does a team like Wisconsin get a shot at the East winner when they had to play no one to win the West? Anything can happen in one game. Same for SEC west vs SEC east right now.

Having seen the transition from the old Bowl system to today's CFP, I don't know if it's any better to day at all. Win the Big Ten, go play the PAC champ in the Rose Bowl and call it a season. Who gives a fuck who the mythical national champion is?
We're on the same page, for sure. I would not have the least bit of a problem going back to the old system. Win your conference, get a nice bowl trip as a reward, and let voters vote. Hell, at least in those days, if you went undefeated and they voted someone else as champ you had legs to stand on by saying "Well, fuck you... we have a different set of voters who say we're champs" Meaning, on the whole, it was just as valid a claim to say we're UPI champions as it was to say we're AP champions.

Of course, the fact that we grew up with that reality soils our view of playoffs, I think. We were used to the champion being "the best team that year." And, frankly, there is no objective way to make that determination - a playoff sure isn't designed to find the best team, and frankly, probably is worse at finding the best team than a bunch of people casting votes is. In any case, because we grew up watching for which team was "the best team that year" I think we're also pre-disposed to recognizing what Playoffs are not.

Actually, and I do say this with some reluctance, by combining voting (even if it's just the votes of the selection committee) and a 4 team playoff, I suppose that's maybe a tad better at finding "the best" team in any given season. What I mean to say is, reasonable minds can disagree about what team was the best in any season, but that number of teams being discussed is seldom, legitimately anyway, a number larger than 4. Maybe there's 5 one season, and even more rare, maybe 6 some other... but, on the average, you might be able to convince me 4 teams in any given season have earned (I hate "deserve") a chance to be considered as the best team that year. That's not to say the voters are fail safe- they're not. Alabama 2017, in my IMO, is evidence of that... but.. the line between 4th and 5th was at least arguable and while I still don't believe Bama should have been there, I can't really ague they shouldn't have been in the discussion, at least.

I do know that 8 teams is too many. And, that's probably born by what I just said to Jax above... I simply am not able to wrap my head around a team ranked 8th being in an honest discussion about being "the best" team in any given season. The distance between 1 and 4 maybe isn't that great... but the distance between 1 and 8, in my IMO is... and always is... and always will be. Fuck... I think I may be getting old. lol

Remember when we had to have a playoff so as to solve the issue of there being a question who the Champion was? How the playoff would extinguish all the controversy? Good times.

In other news, I have just declared myself a National Champion for all sports 2018. The NCAA or ESPN (if you wish) may declare other champs, but make no mistake, I too am a champion. I'm gonna paint it on T-shirts and cop cars, so it's real.

I refuse to recognize you as a national champion of anything until your local police department actually proclaims it by decorating a squad car in your honor.

Meh. They should have been in the playoffs over Alabama...

And...in hindsight...since they did do something that Alabama couldn't, which is beat Auburn, you could make the case that they should have at least gotten a shot over Bama, a team that didn't win their division or conference championship.

I want to see someone like Indiana claim a national championship.

I want to see the ESPN beauty pageant fail. I want the NCAA to come in and actually take control over the FBS division and put into place their standard system for determining a National Champion for football.
