U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

I'm excited to hopefully see Holden get some strong playing time, as well as Corona. Two guys with gobs of talent that, for one reason or another, have not been involved much in the qualifying so far, but who could potentially play an important role in the World Cup. Donovan is included in that as well, obviously.

We'll see where the goals will come from with this group, but the midfield looks very strong overall.

Holden is coming off a 16 month layoff due to knee surgery. Once he hits form, the US might make some noise in 2014.

Agreed. Holden isn't playing much yet due to the injury and rehab, and Corona because he is just getting in and comfortable with the NT as a young player. Both, though, can bring a different level of play from the "supporting" player group than most of the others on the roster. I think both could have a tremendous impact on the team, and add to an attacking presence that continues to grow and improve under Klinsmann.

Juergen wants to play a possession-attacking game, and these are two more guys who are able to bring dynamic skill to the team. It may be a challenge to find the perfect combination of players, but for once the US has built up some very solid depth.

Stuart Holden, by far, was the best player on the field. Guy has a vision and touch I haven't seen any American play with. Injuries are the only thing that has prevented him from being a world-wide name.

Holden was brilliant on Saturday night. Completely agree he has a skill-set that is unique to the US team. If he stays healthy over the next year... look out!

Now the question - where does he play, whom does he replace? Does he pair well with Bradley centrally? I suppose that would make Bradley the more defensive of the two, but it would be an interesting combination. Or, does he play outside on the wing?

I must say, with the possibility of Holden, Donovan, and maybe a few others getting the chance to impact an already solid team, I'm getting excited about next summer (pending continued improvement in the back).

Starting XI for tonight:

Nick Rimando; Michael Orozco, DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Parkhurst, Clarence Goodson; Joe Corona, Mikkel Diskerud, Kyle Beckerman, Jose Torres; Landon Donovan & Chris Wondolowski

I still haven't gotten over the ridiculous red card Michael Orozco got in the effing third minute of the final group stage game in the '08 Olympics against Nigeria. One of the dumbest plays I've ever seen an athlete do in any sport. I still harbor ill feelings towards the man for that, but he's got an opportunity to redeem himself in my eyes now.

Ugh. Still lingers with me as well. What a terrible disservice to an otherwise young and promising squad.

I remember this as well. Any goal against Mexico is worth something special to me.
