They finished 4th in the group of 6, which places them in a playoff (home and home) against New Zealand for a WC berth.
Still alive, barely, but they were about 5 minutes away from staying home, before the 2 USA goals.

That was brutal for Panama. On the one hand I feel bad for them being so close and then having it evaporate. On the other hand, any team that gives up such a poor goal like the one Johannsson scored doesn't deserve to go to the World Cup finals in the first place. They had clearly already quit and started pouting when they should have been pressing for a third goal of their own in the few moments they had left.
