Tyrone Willingham (official thread)

Ty Willingham Resigns

Plagued by mediocrity and the inability to recruit players at Notre Dame and Washington, Ty Willingham has finally announced his resignation after Washington's annihilation by the Irish. Willingham states that he is resigning, but will coach the remainder of the season.

The question, now, is whether the media will berate the Husky athletic program as a racist organization as it berated the Irish when the fired Willingham and subsequently hired Charlie Weis. Weis has 11 wins 14 attempts against the PAC-10 as Irish head coach, while Willingham on has nine wins in 30 attempts.

Ty had a five year contract that would pay him approximately $1.4M/year through next season (2009). Stange that he would just "resign and give up the $1.4M he would have made next year". I could be wrong; however, my guess is that he was offered a very large cash incentive by the school to resign and thus Washington's athletic department avoids any possible suggestion of racism. :)

Apparently I was correct:

Willingham, who will leave with a year left on his contract, will receive a $1 million buyout, Woodward said.

I just gotta say that this is all Ty's fault, seriously

Seriously TW's resignation/firing was a direct result of the UW beatdown at the hands of a Superior Schematic Advantage that has since replaced him at ND.

The pioneer of said SSA, aka Bill Belichek's offensive coordinator during the Pariots spygate controversy, gets the ultimate revenge for unfair blame for the troubles and failures which he previously suffered in silence at both ND and NE.
While deeply offended and scarred by those in the press and football elite who blamed CW for diminishing returns with superior talent, for the sake of professional courtesy and personal respect, CW has previously refrained from and asked others to stifle directing any blame, criticism, or complaints against his predecessor.
With TW stepping out of the fraternity of college football coaching, look for a new release of fact finding on the TW lingering curse, and how TW's resignation/firing is retroactively an act of divine retribution and justice for the past, present and future failures in the SSA regime including:
1. spygate at NE,
2. ND athletes not performing to level of predicted skills,
3. future ND losses,
4. media bias keeping ND from their rightful status in polls and BCS rankings, and
5. any other real or perceived oppressions TW has brought upon his SSA successor.

Former Notre Dame football coach announces his retirement

Ty Willingham, who is 56 and said he had ?no problem announcing that,? insisted his coaching days are behind him. The former head coach at Stanford, Notre Dame and Washington has no wish to return to the sidelines. ?I?m retired,? he said. Willingham, who also served as the president of the American Football Coaches Association two years ago, said no more until he was nudged by another question. ?I?ve done 30 years of collegiate and professional coaching. That?s not a bad career. I think I?ve had failures. I think I?ve had successes. I think I?ve been places that most people will never go in life with my career. It?s a good career,? he said. ? Washington says it's Willingham's fault:

http://www.derekjohnsonbooks.com/BowDownToWillingham.html

Tyrone Willingham was, at every turn, one man everybody could look at to make themselves feel good. In 2002, when he led Notre Dame football to a 10-3 record, the national media anointed him as an icon of impeccable integrity, discipline and class, the legendary "Molder of Men." For black Americans in particular, Willingham represented one of their own, rising to prominence in a high-profile position usually held by middle-aged white men.
Following his controversial firing at Notre Dame, Willingham came to Washington in 2005 under great fanfare as UW's first-ever black head football coach. At the initial press conference, Willingham stated his purpose: "It is time for the University of Washington to return to being the Dawgs. And it is my understanding that a dawg is a vicious animal."
But from the moment Willingham got behind closed doors with his new team, a disturbing side of his personality emerged. In this ground-breaking book, Derek Johnson presents a shocking side of Tyrone Willingham only seen by the Washington Huskies players. Many of them quickly grew to loathe him and the game of football, while watching in dismay as the public idolized the media's lofty image of Willingham.
By December 2007, crushing defeat after crushing defeat eroded Washington's legacy as a powerhouse. Despite warning signs of incompetence, many fans, sportswriters, pundits and even the NAACP still rushed to Willingham's defense. With regional tensions running high, UW President Mark Emmert rendered his decision to retain Willingham for a fourth year. The resulting fallout blemished the face of Husky Football forever, while raising questions about the true nature of race relations in America

The quotes from the players at the bottom of the page are pretty interesting.

It's a fair point, regardless if it's an unpopular one. The problem with the minority hire is that you're mercilessly crucified for the minority fire. In this case though, I don't think Washingtons problem was that they hired (and didn't fire) a black coach, it was that they hired Notre Dame's black coach.

Sounds like sour grapes though. U-Dub was eroding long before Ty, seeing as how there was a used car salesman named Rick Neuheisel there prior to Willingham's arrival. So yeah ... it's more of the same. It's all Ty Willingham's fault.

So Mark Emmert can take credit for ruining two football programs (Washington, Penn State).
