Freshman savior? Ty might be going crazy from seat's heat

Tyrone Willingham is planning on being at Washington a long time.

Delusional, right? Ty has lost a broad base of support, 25 games in three seasons at U-Dub, his AD and maybe his touch as a big-time head coach. All this situation lacks is a cigarette, a blindfold and a president with an itchy trigger finger. But you had to listen close last week when Teetering Ty was selling his own job security to every recruit in the country.

"I offered my first freshman a couple of weeks ago," Willingham said during a college football forum in Dallas.

With Huskies starting out 0-2, Washington prez says give coach time

SEATTLE -- The president of the University of Washington says Husky fans need to give football coach Tyrone Willingham a break.

President Mark Emmert says the team has one of its toughest schedules ever. The Huskies have gone 0-2 and face No. 3 Oklahoma next. Emmert says many fans have been offering their opinions on the football program.

But the president says no one is more frustrated by the losing record than Willingham.

Emmert says the university was weeks away from hiring a new athletic director. The man who hired Willingham was forced to resign.

Are they afraid of a Notre Dame like backlash if they give Ty the boot? This guy made some good calls earlier in his career, now it seems like he just can't win anymore. I think Ty needs to spend less time on the golf course and more time looking at film or rethinking his approach.

There's a big difference between bringing moderate success to Stanford and returning a moribund ND team to their mythical glory days or taking a soft Washington team through a very difficult schedule. I don't think he's done anything to merit all this criticism, honestly. He's not a great coach, but he's a lot better than he gets credit for.

Notre Dame not Tyrone Willingham's biggest concern

Fixing 0-6 team is Willingham's focus

By Brian Hamilton | Chicago Tribune reporter October 21, 2008 The fact is, the long-awaited collision between Tyrone Willingham and Notre Dame, his ex-employer, was not long-awaited at all.

In the fall of 2005, the Charlie Weis-led Irish were 19-point winners over Willingham's Washington Huskies in Seattle.

Still, some issues keep the story line afloat as the teams meet again Saturday: The undying, impassioned emotions regarding Willingham's dismissal; Willingham's struggles at Washington; and Weis' progress at Notre Dame, among others.

"How difficult has the year been for me?" Willingham said Monday, repeating the question he'd been asked. "It would take me too long to tell you."

This is a sampling of what Willingham did say as his 0-6 Huskies prepare to welcome the Irish on Saturday:

?On whether he can view this as just another game: "What I always try to do is take Tyrone Willingham out of things. It's not about me. It's about the two teams."

?On why Irish fans still examine what he does in Washington: "The first thing is, it's exciting that people care. You never minimize that point in life. But hopefully there and here, I've done the right things. I've tried to put my teams in position to be successful, on the field and off the field. ... But as we know, it comes down to one simple fact: Let's win the football game."

?On why he hasn't had success with the Huskies: "We just haven't made the things happen that we need to have happen. At the wrong times, we've made mistakes. We've had some wonderful efforts along the way, but effort is not what it's about. It's about finishing the task. That's what we've got to do."

?On whether Notre Dame and Washington are headed in opposite directions: "Obviously, the records might say that, but I think there's still a lot of growth in our program. Unfortunately, we're having to work through a lot of youth in starting positions. ... But at the same time, that's not an excuse."

?On whether he's a different coach now than he was at Notre Dame: "There's no question about that. Hopefully I keep growing. (A radio ad he heard for a book about billionaire Warren Buffet) was talking about his continuing to grow and continuing to learn. I'm not in the class of a Warren Buffet, but hopefully I'm a person who continues to grow and continues to learn."

?On whether it's time to move past the Ty Willingham/Notre Dame drama: "I have."
