His best shot was in '16 but he choked away his last 3 games and then lost 12(?) draft picks. Not looking like he'll ever recruit well enough to have that kind of talent to work with again.

Yeah. I was thinking more about Mack Brown, and in hindsight, it's clear that he had built a recruiting monster in the years leading up to 2004. Clearly that's not the case with our friends up north.

Off the top of my head I can only think of two. Schiano's break through year at Rutgers was in Year 6, and Frank Beamer at Va Tech was in Year 7.

And I think both of those aren't similar in that they were essentially building programs from scratch. Harbaugh inherited an alleged blueblood program with limitless resources and all the free publicity and press in the world.

Can anyone tell me of a coach who turned a program around after the five year mark? I guess Mack Brown if you consider Texas' run started in 2004. Nobody else comes to mind. The statement season always happens in the first three years.
Frank Beamer at Va Tech. The six years before he arrived, they were 7-4, 7-4, 9-2, 8-4, 6-5, and 9-2-1, which for them was better than their normal history.

Beamer then went: 2-9, 3-8, 6-4-1, 5-6, 6-5, 9-3, 9-3, 10-2, 8-4, 7-5, 9-3, 11-1 (loss in Title Game with Vick), 11-1

Edit- I see Dryden beat me to it.

And I believe they had the lead in all 3 with less than 2 minutes to play.

Don’t care if the clip is old, it’s still a reminder of their recent failures. A hilarious one at that.

God, that's delicious.

@Buckeye86 pointed out where i think the biggest fundamental flaw with harbrau's program lies: his coaching staff.

In five years, he's had a tremendous amount of turnover on his coaching staffs (except JayBau! *fart noise*). The staff he has in 2019 is freaking terrible. Look at it, top-to-bottom and tell me how many of those guys you could see coaching at Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, LSU or even Florida? Not one my my estimation.

Ryan Day saw two good coaches on that staff, hired them away and cut harbrau off at the knees. Savage.

The 2016 Game actually makes a nice dividing line in his career Up North.

Total Record: 40-15
Pre-2016 Game: 20-4
2016 Game and after: 20-11

Throw Rutgers to the curb.

If the team is already starting to quit on him, a home loss to Iowa on 10/5 where the offense once again sputters against a competent defense will start the real decline.....with Penn State and ND looming a few weeks after.

1-3 in October seems more likely than not at this point. Illinois being the only one they cant possibly lose. Though Brandon Peters somehow beating them would be all time hilarity

It makes it even better that they lost those 3 games by 5 points, with obviously the worst one in OT. So sweet.

2016 Iowa: Michigan led 13-11 with 3 seconds left; lost 14-13

2016 Ohio State: Michigan led 17-14 with 6 seconds left; led 27-24 in second OT; lost 30-27

2016 Florida State: Michigan led 30-27 with 42 seconds left; lost 33-32

Why does it always feel like Michigan is the worst program in the country at mitigating injuries, mismatches, and recruiting holes?

How does Northwestern constantly field competent rushing defenses with Northwestern caliber D-lineman recruits and linebackers? Why can't we do this when our plan B guys (who would be starters at half the programs in the country) are forced into action? This is so goddamn frustrating.

I don't think that's true AT ALL. Shit, some of our "plan A guys" wouldn't start at half the programs in the country (assuming you mean D1).

JPC gets it at least.
