ttun Shenanigans and Arguments (2015 official thread)

".....too many slow white guys...."
-John F Cooper
I don't know about Coop, but I do have two sources for a former Ohio State track coach who called all his distance and middle distance runners into the locker room and told them, "clearn out your lockers 'cause I don't have time to work with a bunch of slow ass white boys." He's also the U.S. Olympic Sprint coach who failed to get his runners to the prelims on time because he didn't switch to the right time zone, thus all were eliminated before they had a chance to run.

You've got to admit that Mattison's move here will go down as some serious grasping defeat from the jaws of victory, though--by all accounts, Neal to UM was a done deal.
 Michigan's program is not exactly positioned to be squandering opportunities like that with 4* d-linemen.

Where do you get your recruiting info? He's not a 4 star recruit according to 247, Rivals, Scout, or ESPN.........Just curious

Two things:

1. What if the parents directly asked Mattison whether or not their son would be accepted without football?

2. There could be some diabolical recruiting tactics going on if certain schools encouraged parents to ask about this. It puts the coaches of decent schools in a really awkward situation if they are directly asked about it and the parents feel the same way as this example did.

This is getting rather convoluted.
It's a simple story... Mattison blew it in epic fashion.
I'd wager he was trying to go after Nebraska's academics and prop up Michigan's. We can see already that diplomacy isn't a strong aspect of this staff.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall when Harbaugh debriefs the holdover guy.

This seems highly unlikely. Why ask him that and then ask him to leave when he answers?
See #2: Because they were encouraged to ask by Nebraska's coaching staff and prepped to be pissed off at the response.

It's sorta like Michigan's classic "disrespect" angle with Ohio kids, only focused on academic standards.

Just a theory.

This

In and of itself one recruit doesn't make or break anyone

taken in the context of a pretty uninspiring finish to the '15 class and that, in order to live up to the ZOMG HARBRAUGH! expectations up north, the scUM staff is going to have to match Urban Meyers recruiting machine....I'd say it does matter. It's another indicator.

Nothing they are doing so far points to the scUM staff being able to match Urbans in terms of recruiting and if they can't match his recruiting they aren't going to match him on the field.

Here is the actual quote from the father. If Mattison was making an economic remark, that's downright insane.

"They made one bad statement," Hoskins said of the Monday visit with Mattison, "and it ruined them. They said without football, Daishon wouldn't be able to go to Michigan -- like we couldn't afford to send him there or we couldn't get him [academically eligible].

I still strongly suspect the family was prepped to ask the question and interpret the response as disrespect towards them.

Mattison has been an extremely successful coach and recruiter for a long time and this has never come up before. Maybe he's just getting old...

Re: The Curious Case of Daishon Neal

During the interview, Abraham Hoskins Jr., Neal's father, mentioned that he was pushing his son towards committing to the Wolverines.

So what changed?

"Michigan was a powerhouse, they came in and they stormed us, they made one bad statement and it was over," Hoskins said. "They said without football, Daishon wouldn't be able to go to Michigan. Like we couldn't afford to send him there, or that we couldn't get him in academically.

"Once he said that, we pretty much escorted him out of the house."

Neal did not like what he had heard, saying that "(They) basically tried to call me stupid in front of my face."

Those are pretty powerful words, and Hoskins seemed let down by the way the family was approached.

"I was leaning towards Michigan, with their academics, stats, everything," Hoskins said. "What if he never played again in his life, that degree could have taken him anywhere."

Yeah, it could have taken him to the "help wanted" desk at the local Walmart and/or McDonalds. Someone should send Hoskins this article:

University of Michigan athletes' 'safe harbor' is general studies

Yeah, this is the funniest part. The scUM fanbase, by and large, thought recruits would be beating down the door to play for The Harbrau™. That most certainly isn't happening. And when compared to what Urban was able to pull off his first couple of weeks in 2011-12, it's pretty pathetic. Maybe they are choosing to largely punt on the 2015 class, but if The Harbrauis going to be this unstoppable recruiting machine they think he's gonna be, that wouldn't be necessary.

The best part is that all of the bluster about The Harbrauhire was largely snuffed out by Urban and his boys winning a National Title right afterward. Just like he stomped on the party about winning The Game for the first time in 8 years with his hire, Urban peed all over this little scUM party too.

Even if they are intentionally punting '15 (they aren't) what's to stop them from using that time to get a jump start on '16 and '17 classes?
