ttun Shenanigans and Arguments (2015 official thread)

I could honestly see scUM winning 6-7 games this year, but the problem is the scUM faithful will all of the sudden think that is the start of a dynasty with their delusion. ScUM is an average program ay this point who is getting by on past exploits of the program and the coach. I've heard a lot of people, not just scUM fans so in agreement that Harbaugh will make the program a playoff contender, because he's Harbaugh and they're scUM. It doesn't exactly work that way. And the satellite camps, though they drummed up some excitement, didn't exactly land some top flight talent for either, they were all bark and no bite. At the end of the day, I'm sure SEC coaches laughed at his satellite camps as they made little to no dent in the elite players minds in the south, I didn't see or hear about any top talent being at the camp or praising a shirtless Harbaugh. And Dantonio who made a living off of diamonds in the rough is now starting to get 4stars within the Midwest and hitting his recruiting stride while Harbaugh is trying to make a nation wide tour gathering up kids who would litter Big South and SWAC rosters. I'd still be worried about The Game because if there's one game that can create his legend, that will be it, as well as the MSU game. But it'll be a while before he can make them a legitimate contender, and that's if he's not run out of town before that. Right now he's still the new car in the garage, the bad axle, leaking gas tank and bad transmission haven't been seen yet

Harbaugh accomplished a measure of relevancy in the south with his camps, the kids he is targeting were 9 when UM was last relevant. At the very least he is getting the name out there. With Meyer and Dantonio in Ohio, what choice does he have? Eventually he will get his Hackenburg, and they will be the darlings of the Capital One bowl.

The options aren't "recruit with the gravitas of old Michigan"
or
"recruit primarily unknown sleepers until he wins enough to recruit decent recruits"

He could recruit more than 1-2 Ohioans in an entire class. The entire B1G is supported by the leftovers from OSU/UM/ND in the Midwest. Currently MSU has subbed in for UM in that scenario. There are plenty of no name or lightly recruited kids from around here and those guys are much more likely to commit and stick (especially after hitting the wall in college) with a support system nearby.

Might it be counter productive to be known in the South as the school sponsored camp where all the scrubs go to try and earn an offer?

It will also be interesting to see how the reputation of the camps evolve if/when Harbaugh dumps 18 early commitments like he did at Stanford in 2010.

That would presumably overwhelmingly impact these under the radar kids committing at these camps.

Fortunately for him, senior recruits are rarely swayed by on the field results, as they're usually finished or down to their final schools by that time. It tends to pay more dividends on the macro level with younger kids.

I don't think Harbaugh is into long term planning, he wants immediate awareness. I agree with everything you wrote, but I don't think he is concerned about burning bridges by dumping kids. It would have to go national for it to bother Jimbo, and I can't wait for it to happen.

I don't think you can necessarily say Urban and Dantanio in Ohio, as our classes are getting very balanced with OOS talent. MSU has recruited OH(and the Midwest in general) very well this year, as Urban is in on a number of OOS kids that he's focusing on instead. Guys like Layne and Deweaver would've been Buckeyes, IMO if the staff pursued them as hard as guys like Mack and Wallace. Ethan Tucky going to NW is crazy, scUM not pursuing him is a pretty big oversight. ScUM is playing a dangerous game, as while Harbaugh is trying to shake it up nationally without winning or playing a game, players in their own backyard are getting scooped up by Dantonio and the rest of the B1G.

Utah...L
Oregon State...Toss Up
UNLV...W
BYU...L
Maryland...L
NW...Toss Up
Sparty...PLUNGER
Minnesota...L, Possible PLUNGER
Rutgers...W
Indiana...W
Ped...W but only because the refs give it to them
Ohio State...PLUNGER

So even giving them both toss up games since they're in the hole, I see them going 6-6 and getting gorilla raped at home by both their rivals and possibly a third time at Minny/

http://247sports.com/Bolt/Michigan-commit-given-3-star-rating-37901938

So a once 0star CB from Canada is now a 3star after committing to scUM. 247sports, admittedly knows nothing about his competition or whether he can play the run or in coverage, but hes now a 3star recruit...

The single quickest way Harbaugh can get the faithful to feel like scUM is back to their old ways is to have consistently overrated recruiting classes.

It's up their with unfounded arrogance as a defining trait of their program.

That strategy kept jHoke employed for several years...
I have friends who root for inferior teams, who try and talk shit and say Harbaugh will sign Gary, and use that as a threat. The only comeback I ever need is, "well OSU has Warriner, ask Ol Nick Saban how good our Oline is". I get crickets every time, lol

Speaking of givens for the program, every recruit, no matter how good, has a better than average chance of turning into an entitled dbag who fails to live up to their potential.

Guys like Peppers and Gary are good recruiting gets but you just know they are going to get lost in an ocean of mediocrity.

If anything, Harbaugh's biggest asset might be his ability to motivate and get the program out of its country club rut.

Then again, I also question the effectiveness of Harbaugh's approach. Michigan fans see a genius, most other people see a psychotic asshole.

I think any new coach every few years is seen as a genius at scUM it's starting to become a trend, and this is their 3rd. I'm already wondering who's the next scUM"genius" when Harbrau bounces, they're running out of legitimate candidates. Maybe Desmond can come out of the booth, they're approaching that level of depseration if/when Harbrau leaves for the NFL

Not true. Example: Tim Beckman...
